Polskie realia w kolędach i pastorałkach XVII i XVIII wieku (na materiale tzw. Kantyczek karmelitańskich)

Enlightenment
religious lyric poetry

Christmas carol
The object of research for the author of the article has been the ancient realities recorded in the texts of carols from the 17th and 18th centuries. The material originates from an extensive manuscript collection of Christmas carols and songs, comprising 357 texts, owned by the cloister of Carmelite nuns in Cracow. This invaluable written monument of religious lyric poetry was published in print by Barbara Krzyżaniak in 1980. The image of the world presented in the Old-Polish carols reflects – in a careful and detailed manner – the realities of the Baroque and the Enlightenment periods, especially the realities of poor Polish rural areas, which the authors of Christmas carols must have known firsthand. Specific saturation of Christmas songs with lay motifs can be observed in the central and closing part of the studied collection. In the lexicon found in Kantyczki karmelitańskie, which describes Old-Polish realities, two basic categories can be distinguished: one of them is composed of proper names (mainly the names and nicknames of shepherds and the names of nuns), the second – much more extensive and internally diversified – comprises the names of all kinds of objects that appear in the descriptions of shepherds’ preparations prior to their journey or merry-making at Christ’s crib. They are, for example, the information about the clothes worn by shepherds, farming implements and household objects, the means of transportation, foodstuffs, dishes, the animals reared or living free, the plants cultivated by people or growing naturally, musical instruments etc.

The authors of the article, knowing about Wat’s interest in language mechanisms, focus their attention on namopaniki – the genre created by the poet. Arguing with the previous findings which concentrated on the presentation of the properties of semantics of the non-rational futuristic word, they propose an interpretation based on the demonstration of the inner energy of text.

O uwarunkowaniach procesu kształtowania się i stabilizacji rosyjskich nazwisk

Russian surnames
historical anthroponymy

family names
The aim of this article is to point to the factors that started the process of family names formation in the Eastern Slavonic area. It also discusses extralinguistic reasons for fixing them as permanent surnames. The official usage of surnames by the representants of different social groups in Russia proceeded as they were receiving full civic rights. It was also connected with the development of administrative structure of the Russian State. The key factor conditioning the usage of family names by the representants of the future generations was the inheritance of grounds and other material goods within a family. It seems that two types of Russian surnames could evaluate spontaneously: 1. the family names of Russian aristocrats motivated by toponyms, and 2. the family names of craftsmen derived from names of professions and occuppations. The creation of the majority of Russian townspeople’s and peasants’ surnames was a concious and controlled process. However, it took into account the trends in forming patronymics and their tendency to become the family names.

The article is devoted to a linguistic analysis of sale advertisements for women’s clothing. The main purpose of the article is to identify the means used by the authors of advertisements for women’s clothing in order to encourage the customers to make purchase. The study concentrates on the linguistic and visual aspects of the discussed microtexts. Firstly, the conducted studies have showed that the authors of advertisements try to establish dialog with an addressee of their message by the use of question forms or imperative mode. Secondly, a macroact which is the advertisement of clothing, can be composed of at least nine microacts that are intended to encourage, praise, advise or promise. In order to achieve this, the advertisers use statements, abuse exclamations, emoticons, create messages that are informatively worthless. Thirdly, the authors of advertisements attach great attention to the aspect of credibility of the message, and because of that often direct attention to well-known persons, institutions or the terms of warranty. The conducted study has demonstrated that language is a basic and most important tool in constructing effective advertising messages.

The article is a continuation of studies concerning textual differences in distribution of variant phonetic forms. The analysis covers the forms being a part of four variances: jestli // jesli, -mdl- // -mgl-, miedzy // między and -mieszk- // -mięszk-. Different textual distribution of the studied forms proved to be significant – not only revealed the segmentation of text known from previous analysis (graphical and phonetic), but also 3 new, previously unknown text boundaries extending between the columns 510/511, 591/592 and 612/613. The strongest relationship with the job of a compositor is indicated by textual repartition of forms belonging to two variances: miedzy // między i jestli // jesli. With regard to the analysed forms the central part Cresc is most standardized, contained in the columns 138-384, whereas the most progressive (containing the greatest number of progressive variants) – is the section of text including the columns 381a–R10v. The completed study has also demonstrated that the boundary between the cluster Q and R established by Kazimierz Piekarski on the basis of a typographical analysis is also the boundary of occurrence of certain phonetic phenomena.

Lusatia is a phenomenon in the history of Europe. For many centuries its inhabitants bravely struggled against the German element, preserving their identity. Such conduct has earned them our admiration. Does this admiration find reflection in the Polish language, for instance in the proper names used today? This article makes an attempt at answering this question. Special attention has been paid to the onyms including the words Łużyce/Lusatia, łużycki/Lusatian, Łużyczanin/Łużyczanka/male or female inhabitant of Lusatia, excerpted from the Internet with the use of Google browser. Their analysis shows which factors also played an important role in the formation of such names, i.e., sympathy and interest in the inhabitants of Lusatia – the people who have been cultivating their culture, language and customs for many years and who, because of their conduct, are worthy of our reflection.

The use of personal names among Slovakia Hungarians

Slovakia Hungarians
bilingualism
This study deals the use of personal names among Slovakia Hungarians. The bilingual environment of Slovakia Hungarians affects their use of personal names. Bilingual persons can choose names from a larger set of names. Choosing a variant of a personal name from one language or the other can depend on several factors: the communicative domain, the communication partners, the social or linguistic context etc. The dimensions of time, space and society play an important role in the change anddiversity of personal names. A Hungarian dominant use of names characterizes Slovakia Hungarians in the informal domains, and Slovak dominant use in the formal domains. A dual use of names or bi-naming can characterize a dual identity, however, most people employ this as a pre-emptive strategy trying to avoid a possible language or communication problem by using the form conforming with the majority norm in a majority language context and the form conforming with the minority norm in a minority language or informal context. Personal names have an identity marking function, and can indicate the language affiliation and nationality of their bearer.

The aim of this article is to present a part of the research results regarding the functioning of phraseological units (i.e. their canonical and innovative forms) in the Polish texts of contemporary prose translated from French. Consequently, there has been created a classification covering various types of relations occurring in given contexts between Polish phraseological units used by translators and the source texts. The practice shows that a translator decides from time to time to interpose a phraseological unit in a given context of the final text, even if there is no any kind of fixed expression in the original. Therefore, it is worth trying to find an answer to a question about translation decisions in this matter.

It was important for the study to determine the frequency of the analysed part of speech. As a result of investigation of the linguistic material it has been demonstrated that nowadays the particles constitute 12.8% of the wordforms used by children. The particle no represented 2.2% of the total of used words. The obtained results have been compared with the data collected during similar research, which was completed thirty years ago (7.5% – all particles, 1.6% – the particle no). On the basis of a comprehensive analysis and the comparison of research results, it can be concluded that in the contemporary spoken Polish of children there occurred a visible increase in the use of particles. This, in turn, may be a symptom of the impoverishment of the Polish language.

In the movie Dzień świra – one of the most popular Polish comedies of the recent years – Marek Koterski presents his personal vision of the Polish language. The director, recognizing the advertising messages as an important phenomenon of the modern culture, makes a paraphrase of such texts – both in their verbal and visual layer. Conducting various linguistic experiments, he reveals manipulative mechanisms of advertising slogans. Parodies and caricatures are intended to demonstrate a fictional harmony of advertising texts – instead of the desired fabulous world, the spectator (and reader) is forced to receive brutal messages, going beyond the sphere of taboo.

surname stabilization in the Polish language
The paper examines the Poznań historical anthroponymy preserved in tax registers from the 17th and 18th century, collected in the Documents of the City of Poznań in the State Archives. The starting point in the description of the surnames is their interpretation based on cultural onomastics according to which the linguistic interpretation of surname forms is accompanied by the social and cultural context. The theses of the paper are based on the linguistic analysis of the onomastic material that has been used in the research process and which rendered it possible to distinguish three main motivational types of Poznań anthroponyms from the 17th and 18th century: surnames formed from appellatives (from old characterizing nicknames, from names of professions, posts and social functions) and surnames derived from proper names (from first names, local names, from ethnonyms). The model that appeared most frequently is an appellative-based surname formed from old nicknames. The second position in the Poznań anthroponymic system is occupied by a surname derived from the names of places. Also surnames formed from first names and appellatives followed this structural pattern due to the conviction of the social superiority of the adjectival model ending in -ski. The third group consists of surnames derived from first names whereas the anthroponyms formed from the ethnonyms and the heraldic names appear rather rarely. Despite the fact that the German language had a significant impact on the surnames of Poznań burghers, these surnames – as the examined anthroponymy shows – preserve, in the majority of cases, the Polish character. As a result of an accurate observation of the anthroponyms occurring in the period of over a hundred and fifty years it was possible to show how the selected motivational types functioned and changed in the examined municipal documents and what degree of stabilization they presented. The process of the formation of the anthroponymy of Poznań burghers shows, on the one hand, specific regional features, on the other hand however – especially with reference to originally Polish surnames – confirms the general regularities connected with the development of the Polish anthroponymy in the Middle Polish period.

contemporary Polish language

The article has verified a hypothesis suggesting that the sequences mentioned in the title and similar to them are constrained syntactic groups, i.e., they do not form a regular combination of simple signs. The verification has been conducted on the basis of a three-stage procedure taking into account the semantic features and inner qualities of the studied expressions, namely, their composition as well as the structural and linear links between segments. It has been indicated that the components of the studied sequences jointly express meaning which can be considered as a form of perlocution: ‘something changes within fragments of time undergoing observation whose measure is determined by a variable component’. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the two components of a sequence that can be exchanged can be realized not only by standard measures of time (second, minute, hour, week), but also by nouns referring to events (match, meeting, term). Also, there is a presentation of the basic limitations in the realization of a variable component and a mutual linear arrangement of variable and constant components. A characteristic of the expressions of the type from week to week, from novel to novel, from match to match is supplemented by the remarks concerning their external syntax.

The text has been devoted to the analysis of the publications of the Movement of Alternative Society (Pol. Ruch Społeczeństwa Alternatywnego, RSA), a group gathering people with neo-anarchist views, originally jointly creating underground Solidarity movement, and later operating independently. The adopted research perspective—primarily pragmatic and stylistic—enabled scholars to distinguish and describe several features of the analysed magazines of the second circulation: the magazine Homek (at the beginning published as a biweekly, then as a monthly and finally published erratically) and ephemeral prints constituting an important tool of the Movement’s (RSA) operation.

The author examines the language of the law. She refers to the contemporary acts; the legal regulations are the subject of her description. The author analyses legal cases which have been interpreted on the basis of the regulations. She discusses a modal dimension of the relationships which create legal cases and also makes closer characteristics of the participants of actions who are connected with these relationships. Language exponents of individual relations are presented. In order to emphasise specific character of legal material, the author precedes each description by indicating the peculiarities of modal dependence which are visible in sentences containing the so-called basic modal units. These sentences stem from other than legal modern Polish texts.

Wtórna nosowość antycypacyjna w Księgach o gospodarstwie Piotra Krescentyna z 1549 roku

The article is a continuation of research concerning textual differences of the distribution of variant graphic and phonetic forms in the first Polish-language edition of Księgi o gospodarstwie by Piotr Krescentyn (Helena Unglerowa, 1549). The analysis comprised the markings of the secondary anticipatory nasality. The article proposes a graphic interpretation of this phenomenon. Such interpretation results from the recognition as common a phenomenon of nasalization of labial vowels before nasal consonants. Different distribution of the studied forms in the text proved significant – it revealed not only the segmentation of text already known from previous analyses (graphic and phonetic – boundaries 429/430 and 485/486), but also three new, previously unknown text boundaries running between columns 477/478, 501/502 and 531/532. The convergence of the separated boundaries with a division of text into typesets was confirmed three times. This attests to a strong dependence of the discussed phenomenon on the type-setting factor. A comparative analysis demonstrated that as far as marking the secondary nasality is concerned, Księgi bear witness of the condition unknown in other prints from this period, which is closer to some 16th-century manuscripts, especially the letters of Stanisław Koszucki.

dialectological research in Warmia and Masuria
The article contains a critical analysis of the opinions of dialectologists studying the dialects of Warmia and Masuria. In their view, firmly established since the 1960s, the influence of the German language on the regions’ dialects was insignificant and superficial. The article recalls and studies the sources used in the compilation of Słownik gwar Ostródzkiego, Warmii i Mazur, presents the linguistic material published therein. It poses a thesis that, although the language system of the studied dialect is Polish, the naming system comprising all fundamental spheres of life was shaped under a significant and versatile influence of German. Loanwords, semantic borrowings, replicas from the German language enter into numerous relationships of synonymy, hyponymy antonymy or hyperonymy with Polish words, creating complex and cohesive semantic fields within which the users of a dialect moved freely.

post-dialectal forms
The article deals with a phenomenon of the evolution of dialects. With respect to traditional dialects, the new post-dialectal formations are characterized not so much by the systemic changes but rather by the functional and pragmatic ones; thus, in their defining, those phenomena should be considered. The first change that had occurred in the original phase of the creation of the Polish ethnical language, under the influence of the dominating variation (i.e., culturally supreme), was the change of the hierarchies of inflexion in the diasystem of the national language, from a horizontal organization (equivalent dialects) into hierarchical one (dominating literary language and functionally limited, socially influenced folk dialects). The fundamental alterations occurred as late as the second half of the 20th century. The first communication breakthrough took place after World War II as a result of migrations of people and civilizational transformations. This brought about changes that were called linguistic integration. There formed interdialects – nowadays, the forms dominating in Polish rural areas. The second communication breakthrough began in 1990s and was a result of changes of the systems of government, globalization and rapid civilizational advances. At that time, there occurred the development of dialects which went beyond their defined framework. In Polish linguistic area there form post-dialectal formations of regiolects of Kurpie, Podhale and Silesia, which systemically stem from dialects. Such phenomena can be termed as the emancipation of dialects. They are the expression of a modern regional identity being under construction.

designations of feelings
The aim of the article is to present and analyze the selected phraseologisms with a somatic component naming feelings which were noted down from the novel of Władysław Stanisław Reymont entitled Chłopi (“The Peasants”). The analysis comprised 175 examples excerpted from the text, constituting just a part of collected research material. Compilation and organization of the exemplary material made it possible to assert that in the studied text the largest group constitute somatic phraseologisms being the designations of negative feelings and possessing in their lexical composition the noun serce (heart). Much less often there appear phraseologisms with other names of body parts, such as skóra (skin), gardziel (throat), głowa (head) or włosy (hair). In most cases the studied somatic phraseologisms occur in the canonical form, sometimes are creatively transformed by the author. In the studied material, the somatic phraseologisms designating positive feelings constitute a less numerous group. Also in this group, there dominate the compounds with a component serce (heart), while with other somatic components are less numerous. Also in this group, the idiomatic phrases occur in canonical forms or are creatively transformed by the author. Research conducted in the group of somatic phraseologisms designating emotional states enabled scholars to state that the novel of Reymont provides rich phraseological material in the form of canonical compounds, functionally justified innovation and metaphorical expressions, which, with respect to their structure and function, resemble phraseologisms. Among the phraseologisms where the writer’s intervention is noticeable, the author—at the level of language—refers to the world of values and cultural behaviours of peasant community of the village of Lipce. What is more, referring in the description of feelings to somatic phraseology, Reymont also emphasises a vital relationship between subjectively experienced feelings and an accompanying physiological reaction by an organism.

Obraz kobiet w przysłowiach polskich i koreańskich
Choi, Yoon Kyo
image
woman
proverb
Korea
Poland
During my research I found many similarities related to women’s image retained in proverbs of both nations, but also some differences. There are common characteristics conditioned by the similarities of women’s position and role in the Korean and Polish history. For example, women were, in both cultures, the inferior sex, illogical beings, the objects subordinated culturally and legally to men, the creatures prone to betrayal, chatty, clever, sly, mischievous, vain, extravagant and quarrelsome. Despite the apparent misogyny, the proverbs—both Korean and Polish—acknowledge in various aspects, the existence of women, who are better and nobler than men, also signal significant influence of women upon men. In addition, the authors of proverbs appreciate such positive qualities of women as feminine goodness, gentleness, economy, being a good companion of life for a man, etc. In contrast, clear differences between the image of women in the Korean and Polish proverbs are related to the fact that in the Polish proverbs the dominant image of women is the image of a person who is clever, often associated with the devil, which in the Korean proverbs does not occur at all. Another significant difference between the Korean and the Polish proverbs consists in the presentation of a tragic fate of women who, in the former Korea depended absolutely on men, believing in many superstitions associated with women.

Polish contemporary women’s magazines
borrowings from English
This article discusses ways to create and use colour names in Polish contemporary women’s magazines. Among these processes we can mention: enrichment of the texts in the press with original non-basic colour names, creating adjectives from nouns whose referents are characterized by a particular colour and the creation of derivatives that are nouns from adjectives. Additionally, attention is also drawn to the persuasive elements such as personification, the terms associated with synesthesia and the process of borrowing names from English. These colour names can be classified into thematic fields related to fashionable clothing, beauty and everyday life, although the extensions of thematic designates, from which the names of colours were created, are much wider.

Juliusz Machulski

anthroponymy
Juliusz Machulski—one of the representatives of the Polish authors’ cinema—is a director recognized by the generations of the audience. His oeuvre is distinguished by characteristic features such as inseparable comedic traits, critical comment on reality and an artistic attitude to the Polish language spoken by his film characters. During the analysis of the linguistic layer of the movies by Machulski, it is worthwhile to signal at least the role of anthroponyms, since proper names—according to research from the circle of literary onomastics—perform equally important function in creating stylization like other linguistic endeavours. Personal -onyms in the films by Juliusz Machulski combine certain common characteristics: they may be used for co-creation of onomastic realism (then, they are a kind of costume), but they also may attest to a consequent (repeating in many films), experimental predilection of the author – for Anglicization, for constructing a network of intertextual references or for creation of pseudonyms or meaningful surnames.

The Semantics of Words Comprising Phraseological Structures – the Observations of Polish Corpus of Wrocław University of Technology Editor
Wieczorek, Jan
corpus linguistics

Word Sense Disambiguation

lexicology
The aim of the article is to present several problems encountered by the editor compiling the Corpus of Wrocław University of Technology. The problems are connected with the application of the method of disambiguation of meanings of words in text (WSD – Word Sense Disambiguation) during the work on material of phraseological character. Any researcher using this method confronts the problem of the lack of semantic independence of words entering into the composition of fixed word combinations. The necessity to develop a unique procedure of conduct for this type of words, inclined the author of the article to experiment in the isolation of independent meanings of words co-forming phraseologisms and to make an attempt at their typologization. The isolation of such meanings has proved possible, although the accuracy of their description is very unstable: in some cases the motivation of semantic changes—which the meaning of a word undergoes under the influence of “being petrified” in a set phrase—is transparent, in other cases, however, we can speak of a hypothetical source of changes rather than a definite modification of meaning. It is worth mentioning here about the rigour imposed by the adopted WSD marking method: a set of all meanings which a given word form may assume in the analysed text must be entered into the database. That is why the problem of providing the definition of words forming phraseologisms is vital from the point of view of a linguist dealing with machine processing of language.

mutual loanword migration
The article presents an analysis of 140 random lexemes of Greek and Latin origin excerpted from Słownik kieszonkowy polsko-rosyjski i rosyjsko-polski [Pocket Polish-Russian and Russian-Polish Dictionary] edited by I. Mitronova, G. Sinicyna and G. Lipkes. The corpus is, according to lexicographers and linguists, an effect of mutual influences of Polish and Russian languages. The opinions on origins of words differ among researchers, and the article attempts to verify the previously accepted judgements by M. Vasmer, W. Witkowski and Z. Rysiewicz, based on informations included in monographs by D. Moszyńska, H. Leeming, S. Kochman, and in historical dictionaries of both languages. With reference to almost 75% of the analysed material, the direction of loanword acquisition proposed by Vasmer, Witkowski and Rysiewicz has been confirmed. However, for about a quarter of the random sample of words, the accepted opinion is not confirmed by more recent historical dictionaries, nor by the lexical material provided in the monographs. The article proposes new results for the direction of loanword migration in this group of vocabulary.

The article discusses urban place names in Łódź in three historical period when Poland was not independent: during the partitions, the First World War, and the Second World War. The analysis focused on ways of German and Russian intervention into urban place naming in Łódź. It describes naming techniques (translations of Polish names, adaptations to foreign phonetic and writing systems, renaming) and the goals of foreign intervention into Polish place naming. The conclusion is that Russian and German interventions during the partitions and the first world war were mainly aimed at cultural assimilation, and consisted in use of Russified and Germanized forms. During the Second World War, on the other hand, Germans were consistently instilling elements of Nazi-German culture and history in place names.

Polish lexicography
The article discusses slang lexis related to garment names, documented in Słownik języka polskiego [Dictionary of Polish Language] by Jan Karłowicz, Adam Kryński, and Władysław Niedźwiedzki (vols. I–VIII, Warszawa 1900–1927). Many of the words are unknown to literary Polish of the first decades of the 20th century, and some differ in their pronunciation, structure, or meaning from garment dictionary used in standard Polish. As the research suggests, the slang material documented in the dictionary is not only rich, but also varied in terms of form and meaning. Characteristically, many words are unstable. Słownik warszawski contains particularly many words for outer garments. Unfortunately, the editing layout of entries in the dictionary makes it impossible to localize the origin of each garment name, and consequently to link it to a particular slang. The explanations of words in the dictionary are usually very short, which often not enough to reconstruct the look and purpose of a garment.

textual standarization

reduced description
Textual Standardization of Rural Inventories in 17th Century occurred in the process of official language communication during the inspection of royal land manors, which was conducted between 16th and 18th centuries. The repetitiveness and stability of structure of this process of language communication, and the official conceptualization of inventoried stock, as well as the inspectors’ intention to be communicative, shaped the 17th-century standard inventory, which consisted of stable textual components, i.e. official terminology, parallel syntactic structures, initializing and finishing formulae, and composition of text, which conformed to the universal accounting formula used for tax purposes: revenue – cost = income under taxation. The constitutive unit of this structure, which for practical purposes reduced description of listed objects, is a categorizing inventory including groups of people, properties, objects, and sources of income in money and in kind. The 17th-century rural inventory, as a textual pattern embedded in the language consciousness of state officials and reinforced legally by treasury instructions, cumulates the uniform and repetitive forms of official language, and approaches the modern form of inventory, which prefers tabular and form-based approaches.

desacralization
The topic of the article are selected aspects of the language of Dobra Czytanka wg św. ziom’a Janka, which is a stylized hip-hop slang version of the Gospel According to St. John. The article presents a selection of lexical and phraseological devices that depart from the traditional canon of Polish Biblical style. The features include various modifications in Biblical onomastics, forms of address, and in phraseology and fixed Biblical phrases. Such transformations lead to a specific desacralization of Biblical content. However, the desacralization occurs only as opposed to the texts that perpetuate the traditional Polish Biblical style, which is characterized by hieratic quality and ritualization. The authors of Czytanka make the Biblical content clear and comprehensible for representatives of hip-hop subculture, following the principle of dynamic translation of Biblical text.

Niezwykłe losy pierwszego drukowanego przekładu Koranu na język polski

Wilno Philomates
translation
The first translation of the Quran, printed and published in 1858, was signed by Jan Musza Tarak Buczacki, a Tatar and Muslim from Podlasie in Poland. Today, however, is is known that the actual translators were two Philomats from Wilno, the priest Dionizy Chlewiński and Ignacy Domeyko. They performed the task in the 1820s for the Muslim Tatars of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, who over generations had lost their knowledge not only of liturgic language (Arab), but also of their ethnic languages and dialects (Turkic). In this way, Lithuanian-Polish Muslims cut themselves off from the roots and sources of Islam. However, the attempts made by the translators to gain acceptance of Russian censors to publish the Polish rendition of the holy book of Islam were not successful. Only in the 1850s the acceptance was granted, after efforts made by Jan Murza Tarak Buczacki, whose name was put on the title page posthumously by the publisher. At the end of the 19th century an anonymous author, probably a Tatar and Muslim, converted the printed translation, authored by Buczacki, into a traditionalhand-written Tatar tefsir: the Polish version was overwritten by hand in the interlines, and synchronized with the Arab lines of the original Quran in Arabic. For dogmatic and religious reason, he transliterated the text form Latin alphabet into Arabic one, without changing the content of the translation. The manuscript is now kept in Museum of History of Religion in Grodno. This is the conclusion of the complicated history of the first Polish translation of the Holy Book of Islam.

research prospects
Polish linguistic research into religious language has been developing dynamically after 1988. From the beginning, they have been conducted in a wide context, and although the process of their integration is limited, it has been consistently advancing. The research in religious language in the last fifteen years have concentrated in two tightly cooperating research centres: Kraków and Poznań. Religious language, as discussed in studies published there, is widely understood as a variety of standard language used in all situations related to the sacrum. The results of research initiated and conducted by the Zespół Języka Religijnego [Religious Language Group] and the proceedings of conferences organized by the Department of the Grammar of Contemporary Polish Language of the Institute of Polish Philology at the Adam Mickiewicz University, are published in a Teolingwistika series, and in continuing volumes of Język religijny dawniej i dziś [Religious Language Now and in History]. Researchers in religious language set many tasks for themselves. They search for reasons for the contemporary crisis of religious language in Poland. They are also faced with the fact that there is no dictionary of religious language, and no synthetic study that would describe religious language in a historical perspective. Researchers also want to investigate the language of young religious persons, and of new evangelism, and the influence of contemporary media on the ongoing changes in religious communication. It is particularly important that the research is not limited to the religious language used in Catholic Church in Poland.

regional variety
In the 17th century, funeral sermons were a frequent type of public address. Over six hundred of such sermons were published in Poland at the time. They were published by presses all around Poland, so that each region is represented in the production. Consequently, funeral sermons are a good source for research in regional varieties of Polish in the 17th century. The article presents the problem on the example of printed material from Lublin, published in the press owned by Paweł Konrad, Anna Konradowa, and Jan Wieczorkowicz. The inspection of the texts has shown that they represent typical qualities of 17th-century standard Polish, as well as regional differential and frequency-based qualities. Because sermons were written not only by authors from Małopolska, it can be assumed that their language was largely influenced by editors and printers.

The article, which analyses material acquired through poll collection, focuses on the awareness of inhabitants of Poznań (aged 35 to 85) of colloquial urban onymes, and is related to an earlier text by the authors, which presented results of the same poll among students of the Faculty of Polish. It turned out that commonly known and used names constitute almost half of the onymes listed in the poll (Akumulatory, Bema, Botanik, Ceglorz, Chwiałka, Dąbrówka, Deptak, Krzyże, Kupiec, Marcin, Marcinek, Okrąglak, Paderek, Pigalak, Raczyńscy, Raszeja, Struś, Szamarzewo, Teatralka). The stability of urban onymy in the language of inhabitants of Poznań is confirmed by phenomena such as: 1) transfer of names on new urban objects (Adaś, Akwarium, Ceglorz, Gargamel, Kanty, Krzyże, Młyn, Paderek, Szamarzewo, Teatralka); 2) extension of referentiality of names because of changes in extralinguistic reality (Chwiałka, Dąbrówka, Marcinek); or 3) creation of new urban onymes (Bulaj, Cyryl, Biblia), including derivates (Bema – Bemowo, Chwiałka – Chwiała).

The article discusses the place of the spruce in Slavic and Baltic customs, folk medicine, chants, and superstitions. The research has demonstrated that the tree has many meanings in Slavic culture (it is treated there as a female tree, which is suggested by its name in East Slavic languages), and although it seems to be straight and simple (because it is the way it grows) it has turned out to be a liminal tree of borderlands, connecting life with death, and allowing for a reconciliation with inevitability of passing, facilitating the passage of a dead person’s soul to the other dimension of eternal life. The spruce combines the joy of wedding (because it is included in the wedding tree) with the threat of infertility (if it is planted too close to home). Additionally, it protects cattle from witches and evil spirits (for the first pasture outing, cattle was driven with a spruce twig, or a tree was laid before the building from which the animals were driven out). Its blades, twigs, and cones were widely used as designates in folk medicine chants, and for infusions, extracts, and ointments used externally and internally as medicines.

Znaczenie słowa i zasada wewnętrznej motywacji cech semantycznych
Tokarski, Ryszard
semantic definition
word meaning
semantic connotation
The meaning of a word has a layered structure with the clearly distinguished center (prototype, lexical meaning) and – the further towards the peripheries – with semantic connotations more and more weak-established in the system. Giving-up ofthe purely structuralist understanding of connotations (verified by semantic and morphological derivatives, collocations, repeatable lexical oppositions, or various tests) has created a danger that semantically irrelevant components may be recognized as relevant qualities. The article proposes a rule for verification of weak connotations. Underlying the principle of internal motivation of qualities is the conviction that the meaning of a word is internally structured, while each quality, especially weak connotations, are motivated by the overall structure of meaning and are explained in the context of this structure.

column writing style
The analyses presented in the article suggest that contemporary column writing can be divided into the basic mainstream and modernizing sub-currents. The mainstream is flexibly inscribed into the tradition of press publishing, and characterized by recentness of problems discussed (although historical ones are not avoided), importance of themes, defense of values accepted as primary in our cultural area, and convincing persuasion, based on argument and logical support for opinions, reference to authority, inative and suggestive quality. Modernizing sub-currents, on the other hand, should be perceived as experimental activity, authored subjectively, polyphonic, exposing and satirical, provocative and appealing to readers in the consctruction of a common world view, based on common interests, and community of ethical principles, language, and laughter (interestingly, these parameters do not have to co-occur). The phenomenon of mixing all currents in a text seems to be the most typical quality of contemporary column writing. The functioning of media content with a given dominant introduces a modernizing stir into this order. The article presents a more careful analysis of several examples of these tendencies.

Based on a dictionary of contemporary Polish surnames, the article collects surnames that are identical as bird names, and includes the number of persons who bear such names. The number is surprisingly high (642 277 persons). The article demonstrates, through examples, how various qualities of birds motivate the metaphorical use of bird names as nicknames, and subsequently as surnames.

O wybranych mechanizmach kondesacji treści w przekazach medialnych

summary
media text
This article revolves around research into the language of the media with special emphasis placed on a description of the fundamental mechanisms of condensing content in printed and audio and visual media. Condensation is among the basic tools of content accumulation; it is related to simplifying the message, generalization and stylistic deformations. Mechanisms applied to summarize have been identified within various areas, including construing messages and releasing to media as well as modes of organizing the content. Of importance here is the trend of replacing verbal messages with visual messages (tables, photos, information graphics, charts, coverage). While condensation is reflected in media as a communication-related activity strictly functionalized within a message, in its structure (cf. the summarizing role of titles, leads, visualizations), it is also conditioned by genre-related issues (cf. news, previews etc.) and most times results from the broadcaster’s strategic efforts.

This article discusses borrowings from English related to the theme aspect of profession names including those adapted in Polish and those typical of professional dialects and formerly not recorded in any lexicographic sources. The research material includes dialogues extracted from Polish serial dramas (referred to by the author as advance serial dramas). The excerpted borrowings from English are primarily oriented to business, media or advertising. This type of words can function in the Polish language because of the language’s nominal need. While many English words referring to professions are used chiefly in social dialects, more and more frequently they tend to be absorbed by general Polish.

opinion media
The rules of opinion journalism, presented in numerous source materials, indicate that an opinion article is constructed in line with the argumentative order: the right selection of arguments is to result in proving a thesis put forward in the text. However, more and more frequently opinion journalists offer the readers an attempt at finding out about the meanderings of politics or the economy single-handedly: temporal narration ordering fragments of texts allows to trace events “frame by frame”. Short sentences, nominal statements, verbs impersonal forms, in the present tense: the reader has no problem with following them. The reader learns about the answers to basic questions important in construing journalism information. Creation of some sort of a report is a transformation stage in an opinion journalist’s work; to a reader this is an extra and superfluous element. The phenomenon of temporality is also related to the fact that the analysed texts are about themselves: by resorting to the first person singular/plural, the author or authors describe their journalist activities, meetings with specific individuals (sources of information), problems with data verification, sometimes with obtaining data. In the course of analyses, the following relation emerges: redundancy – condensation necessitating a more in-depth analysis with respect to the rules underlying contemporary opinion journalism genres.

An analysis of the experiences, insights and proclamations by mystics and prophets from various epochs unveils the characteristics of individuals exposed to long experiences and holistic (or integral) cognition. A mystic transformation affects the mode of speaking and communicating with the world. Language with its stereotypical phrases and connotations certainly limits human cognition. However, in the process of their transpersonal experience, mystics go beyond this barrier and overcome cognitive limitations including the flaws of human language. In order to present an altogether “different” space of reality shared by mystics, and to share their proclamations and teaching with a large audience, mystics apply very specific linguistic tools like the metaphor, allegory, antithesis, paradox, analogy, symbol, quotations from the Bible, hyperbole, parallelism, chiasm and, last but not least, parable. An act of viewing the prophecy and epiphany-related language reflecting the authors’ synoptic (mystic) awareness “from the inside” makes it possible to identify archetypal criteria of the mystic experience and to establish the correct meaning of the key expressions (the sacred) and sacral acts of speech.

literary communication
This article touches upon the tabular nature of free verse; here it indicates the individuality of verses in the text structure resulting from its non-linear character (spatiality) as a result of free verse. In other words, any text written in free verse is potentially a structure of coincidental syntax e.g. as a result of maximised equivalence each single verse is semantically independent and primarily independent with respect to syntax from the other verses. This article relies on the assumption that reception of a text written in free verse is non-linear and therefore tabular. This assumption is based on a conviction that the tabular nature is not a revelation of the new media or the change in perceiving texts propagated in the new media. Rather, it is a phenomenon typical of poetry; it started to accompany poetry when the notion of free verse was introduced. The text is illustrated with examples of poems by contemporary Polish authors.

The article is an attempt at a chronological presentation of the most important old and complete translations of the Bible by the time and including the Protestant Reformation in both compared languages. As for the Dutch language, eight Biblical translations have been analysed with Protestant translations prevailing (5). On the other hand, Polish is represented by five old translations of the Scriptures with a slight advantage of Protestant translations (3) over Catholic ones (2). Translations of the Bible largely affected the language and the style of the Scriptures. It is worth emphasizing that they were most influenced by the Protestant Staatenbijbel (1637) in the then Netherlands and by the Jakub Wujek Bible (1599) in Poland.

Oboczność mię cię się // mie cie sie w Księgach o gospodarstwie Piotra Krescentyna z 1549 roku

linguistic variants
linguistic standard
historical phonetics
The goal of this article is to provide a detailed description of the mię cię się // mie cie sie alternation as presented in Księgi o gospodarstwie from 1549. In the analysis, four aspects have been taken into consideration: 1) the alternation’s position range, 2) the textual lack of continuity of the alternation’s state, 3) identification of the extent to which a compositor affected a text, 4) the extent of normalization of the mię cię się // mie cie sie opposition in all identified parts of the text against the background of other texts from the time under scrutiny. In the text, the variants were reflected only in the forms of the się reflexive pronoun. A majority of the text is evidence of a status typical of Krakow prints from the first half of the 16th century referred to as the Lesser Poland standard: a verb + sie, a preposition + się. A different status is confirmed in the initial columns of the book: adjacent to a verb – columns 113–248, following the w, przed, na and nad prepositions – columns 48–78, following the za preposition – columns 1–112. This alternation is most diversified with respect to the text when it accompanies a verb. The distribution of modes of marking the forms of the reflexive pronoun provides evidence that this phenomenon could be affected by the compositor.

One of the statutory provisions of public media is to popularize the knowledge of the Polish language – the present authors analyse diversified aspects determining the effectiveness of the execution of the task and the media’s commitment to its social responsibility, and proceed to evaluate the basic assignments and responsibilities involved in the journalistic profession. These responsibilities result largely from the reception of the profession by the general public, and from those that emerge within the context of studies on language authority figures in present-day Poland. The next stage of the analysis involves an evaluation of the activities of all-Polish national broadcasters in view of their practical implementation and execution of the commitments set in Art. 21, Section 1a, item 8 of the Radio and Television Act (diffusion and divulgation of the knowledge of the Polish language). The remaining part of the article, including postulative claims, results from an analysis of the activities popularizing the knowledge on Polish available in the media and from the conviction of the necessity of expanding them beyond just grammaticality and correctness in the language use.

Polish sports vocabulary uses a variety of sources, including lexical elements of various origin that include foreign lexical elements. A fairly significant part of this vocabulary consists of words and expressions that include in their composition onomastic, toponymic and anthroponymic components. An analysis of this vocabulary proves that, from among sports terms with the onomastic component, nominations that stem from the Mediterranean, Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon traditions are decidedly dominant, whereas those of Polish origin are rare and infrequent.

language policy
The article embarks on a critical analysis of the issue, recently reverberating across the country, of granting a status of a regional language to the Silesian ethnolect. Within the relevant public space, the problem interlocks the three following types of discourse: legal, political and scientific. Onto thus formulated discourse superimposesthe common perception of the unresolved tension of the augmented efforts for revival of the self-identity and political positioning in the Silesian society. These efforts are, in turn, related to a very strong feeling of ethnic identity of the Silesians, who like to emphasize their cultural distinctiveness in everyday communicative situations. The notion of the regional language is a special legal category in EU legislation and has been introduced to Polish legislative discourse after this particular language status has been granted to Kashubian. Currently, a number of political and social initiatives are being undertaken in Upper Silesia that are aimed at the administrative recognition and the application of the same legal category to the Silesian ethnolect. As these actions are mainly undertaken by organizations that demand political autonomy for Silesia and put forward demands for the recognition of the Silesian nationality, academic circles are in the main wary, if not apprehensive. As a result, the role of the elite seeking to work out grammatical standards and spelling convention for the Silesian language in the making, being created in a top-down fashion, has been largely taken over by local associations of people wishing to revive the Silesian regional dialect, with a little support of professional and academic staff. Future fortunes of the would-be Silesian language depend on many factors: on whether the legal status of a regional language will be granted or not, on the quality of work of those who have embarked on attempts to carry out agenda that includes works on the standard spelling convention for the language, and on the Silesians themselves and their acceptance of the solutions that are to be imposed in a top-down fashion. Another contributing factor will undoubtedly be the elevation of the Silesian language status through a creation of the language corpus (literature, dictionaries, course books) and broadening of its functional scope.

townspeople of Greater Poland
The present article is meant to support the idea of the research methodological concept that underlies a diachronic approach to the study of the Polish language in the aim of providing appropriate methodological and practical tools for analyzing language change and the one that would include historical Polish language in the general study on the language. This, in turn, would create foundations for a better understanding of the linguistic phenomena occurring in more recent times. For the linguistic analyses, some sections of the archival municipal records of the city of Poznan have been selected: the inventories of Poznan’s burghers, whereas the longer passages have been excerpted from the local municipal records of the provincial court of justice, i.e., the records of civil litigation of the town’s board of aldermen. The source material, apart from being undoubtedly helpful in onomastic research, provides additionally an opportunity to learn more about the economic standing of the inhabitants, their professions and occupations and the related social standing. Thus obtained data make it possible to verify and, sometimes, reassess conclusions on thesocial stratification of the local townsfolk, the hierarchy in professions and, in addition, provide grounds for a reliable comparison of the degree and the growth rate in economic improvement between the burghers in Greater Poland and those of other towns and cities in Poland similar in size and importance. On the basis of the resulting lexical and semantic analyses one can conclude that townspeople from Greater Poland of the time were fairly well-off and enjoyed wealth in terms of having an abundance of material and worldly things. The contemporary measure of wealth was everyday consumer goods that featured household linen, table linen and clothing. Household items, such as kitchenware, tableware, bathroom accessories, goods for own use were also considered valuable. In addition, townspeople had also jewelry, real property or money, but these did not constitute any major determinant factors in determining a particular position in the hierarchy of social standing.

The present article discusses the role of poetic texts in recreating and reestablishing modernist means for the conceptualization of the world. The article has been divided into two parts. The first part is to present the theoretical considerations on the participation of poetic materials in revealing the meaning of lexical units and the world’s conceptualization generated by a language lexicon. The other part includes a semantic analysis of the lexeme dziewanna (mullein), whose conceptual model has been reconstructed on the basis of modernist poetic texts. The analysis of artistic texts has made it possible to demonstrate conceptually the fundamental, though not attested in systemic facts, special features of the lexeme: [dziewanna] “has golden and yellow leaves”, “has a long and straight stem”, “is tall” and “blooms in summer”. Poetic texts also attest to the attribution “grows on barren land”, which has been preserved in the Polish proverb: Gdzie rośnie dziewanna, tam bez posagu panna (literally: [homestead] where mullein grows is where a portionless maid lives) All considerations done so far also indicate that the most important place within the conceptual framework of the word is occupied by the elements that belong to the domain: PHYSICAL FEATURES, and the range of colour characteristics in particular. These elements form a strong part of the semantic core of the name and determine numerous connotations such as: “beauty”, “perfectness”, “brightness”, “purity”, “joy”, “vitality”, “biological determination”, “joy of living”, “youth” and “health”, “fertility of nature”, “fertility”, “abundance”, “richness”, “eroticism” and “sexual appeal”. The conventionalized character of the elements of the sub-framework: PLACE OF GROWTH – “grows on sands, waste grounds”, “grows in desolate places” influences the relatively well-developed structure of this section of the conceptual model of the word. The environmental features of the name justify, in turn, the following connotations: “penury”, “loneliness” and “abandonment”. Its locative characteristics also includes the image of the flower in which the connotations such as “heroic loneliness”, “perseverance despite the odds” come into the foreground.

This article presents a statistical and comparative analysis of four spelling conventions that represent different stages in the development of the Polish graphic system: the graphic system of a late-medieval manuscript (hand-written text), the standard spelling convention typical for the first half of the sixteenth century, the accepted and standard modern spelling of the first half of the twentieth century and the innovative set of graphic features used in electronic media. The characteristics of the statistical parameters encompasses dispersion and entropy in the first and the second row of letters, as well as in two-element sets (dyads). The analysis proves that: 1) inasmuch as the degree of differentiation of the distribution of signs, the history of Polish spelling convention prior to the solidification of the modern standard practice (accepted standard system) manifested a self-organizing tendency that was based on a reduction of letter signs and two-element letter combinations (ligatures) with the frequency of 1; 2) innovative solutions used in the set of graphic features characteristic for electronic media do not violate the statistical proportion between letters and their dyads operative and specific for modern standard graphic system 3) in respect to theory and information, the transformations of the graphic substance (graphic system) (within the analysed chronological timeframe) depended on neither progress (evolution) nor degradation.

A content analysis of the E. Orzeszkowa’s Positivist novel Nad Niemnem [On the Niemen] makes it possible to indicate a number of different mother-types featured in the book and created by its author, namely: the Polish Mother, the caring cat mother, the cuckoo-type mother, the mother in absentia and the willow mother. The type of the Polish Mother (an ideal of patriotic motherhood, Polish: Matka Polka, the Polish Mother was the secular equivalent of the Holy Mother) is epitomized in Maria Kirłowa, earnestly and wisely devoted to her children. She runs and manages the household single-handedly, is a guardian of the home, and all alone raises her children and prepares them to live in the society of the latter half of the nineteenth century. Another mother, Andrzejowa Korczyńska, a proud Polish patriot, makes a rather monumental figure. Living a life full of ideals and rich promises, this widow seems to provide a model of proper motherhood to be followed, but, being alienated in thefamily and her social environment, is eventually a failure and she fails in life. Her son takes advantage of her, knowing that she is ready to do everything for him no matter what happens, like a cat-mother. The mother-cuckoo is represented by Starzyńska, who chooses her personal interests over the importance of family and her children, Janek and Antolka, and lets somebody else raise them. The reason behind her behavior is the need for remarrying, apparently stronger than her maternal feelings. The mother in absentia, i.e. one that is virtually non-existent in the process of the education and development of her children, is self-concentrated and self-obsessed Emilia. In this particular case, the role of Witold and Leonia’s mother is taken over by Marta, who – like a willow-mother – raises them, feeds them, educates, consoles and pampers them, not forgetting, however, about being a demanding and controlling guardian. Most of all, however, she is always there and is always ready to assist them. The novel, set in the complicated reality of the challenging second half of the nineteenth century, is a moving reminder how restrictive women’s standing was and how this situation influenced the woman’s family duties as well. These responsibilities were viewed and executed by contemporary mothers differently and had a different meaning for them, which is very eloquently presented in Eliza Orzeszkowa’s realistic novel.

negative projection
The author’s intention is to present the most important techniques applied by Słowacki intended to evoke a negative projection of death in three dramas written in the pre-mystic period: Kordian, Balladyna and Beatryks Cenci. The excerpted material is analysed semantically and lexically in view of its semantic contexts concerning human death. The basis of the reconstruction of the negative creation of mors, featured in these works, is provided by a description and discussion of the figures of speech and rhetorical devices with a lexical component that belongs to the semantic field ‘death’ (metaphors and personifications in particular), as well as substitute designations for designates that are related to the phenomenon of the passing of time where one’s life is slowly coming to an end. In addition, the author provides a characteristics of the Thanatic semantics of the lexeme blood and derivatives thereof, as well as names for the colour red. Verbal realizations of such conceptual constructions highlight such features of deaths as: mysteriousness, ghastliness, rapaciousness, perversity, brutality and cruelty that imply the feeling of sadness, fear and repulsion. It should be noted, however, that the “theater of death”, presented by Słowacki in the dramas, is of ambivalent nature because the negative manifestations of Thanatos are at the same time supplemented with euphemistic approaches aimed at easing the tension, softening the horror of death and camouflaging its terrifying dimension. These approaches are discussed in the following article: Juliusza Słowackiego “theatrum mortis” na przykładzie “Kordiana”, “Balladyny” i “Beatryks Cenci” – wizja ułagodzona.

colour
Korzeniowski’s novel features different colours (white, yellow, red, green, skyblue (azure), brown, pink, orange, gray and black) that describe and specify the appearance of the protagonists, their places of abode and the surrounding nature. The significance of these ”primary” colours are then complemented with a special vocabulary of light and shade that renders not only the beauty of the characters in the novel but chiefly their emotions and experience. The colours are to distinguish and differentiate the protagonists of the book, who are identifiable by coded references to colours. They are representatives of the local petty gentry, impecunious minor noblemen, who nevertheless live sumptuously and above their station and the colours are to show their bad taste and poor choices. This group is contrasted by a traditionally living family of the Starzyckis, who are faithful to their tradition and live a modest and orderly life, while their ideals concerning order and modesty can be seen even in their dress. Thus, the colours attributed to them and to their environment are to reevaluate virtues, highlight values and those traits of character that the author of the novel considered most important. Fanciful and colourful little things as well as the colours used in the descriptions of nature underline the realism of the setting in the novel. Colours in Kollokacja are mainly evoked in the linguistic creation of the protagonists and their emotions, whereas much more sparingly in descriptions of manors, houses and nature, which emphasizes even more the dominant role of the characters of the novel and the subordinate role of nature and the description of villages and cottages as the setting for the novel.

The object of studies presented in the article are the designations of colours documented in the novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz entitled In Desert and Wilderness. Against all appearances, it is not the issue treated only marginally by the writer, which may be a little surprising if we take into account the character of the book (an adventure novel for youth, focused basically on the lively, attracting attention plot and not on extensive author’s narration). The author of the article distinguishes more than a dozen of groups of realities especially often characterised from the point of view of their colours.Primarily, these are the descriptions concerning the world of African flora and fauna – exotic for the Polish reader. As it results from the conducted studies, the attention of Sienkiewicz is mainly drawn to the colours of animals, especially birds. It is likely that the writer’s predilection for hunting played here a decisive role. African flora is basically presented in the form of colourful spots against the background of greenery, and not by detailed descriptions of the appearance of individual representatives of a given species. Additionally, the writer’s interest is aroused by changes of colours of the sky and the whole surrounding world depending on the time of day, atmospheric conditions, light intensity (mainly sunrises and sunsets).

The article makes an attempt to verify the theses concerning the kind of dependence of the Old-Polish Psalms and Psalters from the Czech Psalters. By juxtaposing the Latin texts of Psalms and the Old-Polish and Czech translations (here mainly Psalm 50 from the so-called Page of Medyka and St. Florian’s Psalter), the authors demonstrate that – firstly – the voices from the Page of Medyka are not (as contended by Stanisław Rospond) an evidence of “fine tuning” of the text of Psalm 50 from Kmed to the translation of this Psalm from the remaining Old-Polish Psalters, and they may have been a result of contact of the glossator with the Czech text (in the written or verbalized form); secondly – that the similarities of the Polish and Czech Psalters are not necessarily the result of the difficulties connected with translation into Polish or lack of translator’s professional skills. The conducted analyses justify the thesis that the translator of, for example, St. Florian’s Psalter rather made use of individual words or constructions present in Czech Psalters as successive versions of expressing the same contents; what is more, in some cases the similarities prove to be only apparent.

The article begins with the presentation of the previous syntheses of the history of the Polish language. Next, the foundations of the description have been presented. According to the author they should comprise, among others, the processes of linguistic differentiation, occurring at the level of the: a) system, b) style as well as the process of linguistic integration leading to the creation of a general language. In the historical and linguistic description, the author distinguished 3 levels: a) political, social and cultural background, b) communicative aspects, c) linguistic aspects. While discussing the problem of linguistic communication, the author draws readers’ attention to three communicative breakthroughs in the history of the Polish language: a) in the first half of the 16th c., b) after World War II, c) at the turn of the 20th century. The article is concluded with a proposal of periodization of the history of the Polish language. The author has divided the history of the Polish language—comprising more than ten centuries—into two great epochs: a) until the beginning of the 16th century, b) from the 16th century until the modern times. They have been divided into subperiods on the basis of varied criteria: historical, linguistic and communicative.

Polish medical terminology
The paper demonstrates attributes of an ideal term on the grounds of nineteenth century Polish medical terminology (names of disorders) from a Dictionary of Polish Medical Terminology by S. Janikowski, J. Oettinger and A. Kremer (Kraków 1881). In the first part of this dictionary, approximately 20 thousand foreign language entries are gathered (Latin, German, French, English) together with their Polish equivalents – from one to several records. The sequence of Polish terms assigned to the entries is not random: from the most to the less recommended. It means that the best terms (I call them ideal terms) come first in the synonymic line. And they are (totally 940) the subject of analysis in this paper. It results from the analysis that ideal terms are mostly: 1) native (98.4%); 2) of simple structure (comprising two elements at most – 89.3%); 3) syntactical derivatives (55.1%); 4) of non-specified origin; 5) sometimes having many meanings (12.2%); 6) relatively long-lasting, that means they generally last in the scientific terminology (74.9%) and - a little bit more rarely (more than 58%) – they keep their position of the ideal term; 7) compared to other terms in a synonymic line, in terms of the structure - frequently (65.5%) identical, that is comprising the same number of elements; 8) most frequently (41.7%) of common root – compared to other terms (all of them or just some of them) in a synonymic line.

This codification also comprised the linguistic layer of the summons. The model of a summons text had been its oral and written text realizations in the court practice both in Polish and in Latin, which were previously known from mediaeval Polish, and also legal regulations included in professional legal literature written in Latin.Numerous reprints of Porządek sądów…, used through centuries in the court practice in Poland, contributed to the popularization and preservation of a summons in linguistic awareness of court officials and participants of court trials as a standard official utterance

scientific editorship – diachronic linguistics – Wojciech Ryszard Rzepka’s output
The paper deals with the way of constructing linguistic commentaries to the Middle Polish texts being published by Prof. Wojciech Ryszard Rzepka together with Wiesław Wydra, Maria Adamczyk or Alojzy Sajkowski. The observations carried out show that semantic explanations— being the main framework of linguistic commentaries made by Prof. Rzepka—become a specific excuse to show and describe grammatical forms, make a classification of language forms on the grounds of their regional, terminological and systemic affinity, highlight the form’s antiquity, and, consequently, to show the development of language throughout history. The use of linguistic terminology in the commentaries, on the one hand, and the citation of linguistic references in explanations which refer to specific issues, on the other hand, show confidence of Prof. Rzepka that the concerned recipients of edited texts have possessed the basic philological knowledge but also the desire and the need to expand it. Presenting the lexical background in a commentary, apart from highlighting the variation of language over time, allows one also to see how an editor works—reaching out to various sources in search of the best interpretative hypothesis, as well as vast knowledge acquired which the author of explanations willingly shares with readers. Accuracy and details of the performed reasoning do not undermine the use of modal denotations—maybe, supposedly, probably—in some explanations. Sharing doubts with recipients is rather an expression of Prof. Rzepka’s incredible modesty, who, himself being a paragon, also sets the bar very high for language historians in the field of scientific editorship who would like to follow in His footsteps.

Problem leksykalnej relacji filiacyjnej między biblijnymi przekładami renesansowymi. Casus Nowego Testamentu Biblii Jakuba Wujka (1599) i Nowego Testamentu Biblii brzeskiej (1563)
Lisowski, Tomasz
lexis of the Middle-Polish period
filiational relation of Renaissance Biblical translations
quantitative-distributional analysis of the Bible translation
The purpose of the analysis is to try to provide an answer to the question whether it is possible to determine the degree of filiational dependence of the New Testament of the Bible translated by Jakub Wujek from 1599 (abbreviation: W) from the New Testament of the Brześć Bible from 1563 (abbreviation: B) with regard to lexis. The study is accompanied by the assumption that the translation of the Brześć Bible may have partially inspired Jakub Wujek in his translation work. The data which enabled scholars to establish the scope of a possible filiational relation between the New Testament of the Bible by Wujek and the New Testament of the Brześć Bible with reference to lexis have been obtained owing to a quantitative-distributional analysis of both texts. Moreover, a comparative context has been considered, that is that between the New Testament of Gdańsk (1606) and the New Testament of the Gdańsk Bible (1632) as texts remaining in closer filiational relation with B, forming a Calvinist-Lutheran translational continuum with this translation. During the study, the number of identical lexical substitutions in place of parallel lexemes common for B and W were treated as an exponent of the degree of hypothetical lexical dependence of W from B. In the subsequent translations of the comparative context under consideration (W and B) they were replaced by alternative equivalents. The result of the analysis with the criteria thus defined is the contention that lexical dependence of W from B is hardly noticeable, which can be proved by the following numerical data: W contains 65 lexemes in total which evidence the studied dependence (they belong to the vocabulary with a frequency f = 1, exceptionally f = 2 or f = 3). They constitute barely 1.2% of the entire lexicon of W, and their total number of occurrences in the text amounts to 74, which is only 0.06% of the entire text of W.

history of printing
The aim of the article is to demonstrate the rivalries stemming from the Old-Polish variant forms/ albo and abo in the 16th-century printed material from Cracow, having the strongest influence upon the forming literary Polish language. The article tries to answer the question how a certain linguistic custom was established, not being a norm yet. For comparison, the process has also been shown in the prints from the northern borderland of Poland and Great Poland, the regions which at that time did not have such a significant influence on the literary language as the prints from Cracow, but also produced more books than other regions. The listing of data from three regions makes it possible to show the differences in the formation of the norm between the centre of cultural life of the Republic of Poland (Cracow) and its peripheral regions – the eastern and the western.

The article presents Poznań school of historical linguistics. The founder of the school is Władysław Kuraszkiewicz. The schools’ central idea is a scholarly attitude which is based on respect for material, philological akribeia (accuracy) and caution in drawing conclusions. The representatives of this school are characterised by aspiration for measurability of research results and understanding of the role of statistics. Research is conducted on the carefully selected, very extensive material taking into account numerous variable features: chronological, geographic, generic, stylistic or formal. Among the scholars who must be included in this school are the disciples of Professor Kuraszkiewicz: Zdzisława Krążyńska, Tadeusz Lewaszkiewicz, Leszek Moszyński, Wojciech Ryszard Rzepka, Tadeusz Skulina, Bogdan Walczak and Tadeusz Zdancewicz. Nowadays, their disciples form another generation of scholars connected with Poznań school of historical linguistics.

Monolingual dictionaries of Polish as well as the old translation dictionaries which until the 19th century also fulfilled the function (in compliance with the intention of their authors) of general Polish dictionaries are traditionally regarded as fundamental sources of the history of the Polish language, especially its development and lexical resources. The collections of folk vocabulary which—more or less professionally—were narrowly used in the papers concerning the past periods of the Polish language aroused poor interest on the part of the historians of language. The article contends that small dialectal dictionaries should be treated equally with other sources of the history of the Polish language, especially lexicographical ones, for they provide a very interesting material for analysis and interpretation, not only linguistic.

funeral sermons
Great Polish printing
literary Polish language of Great Poland
linguistic regionalisms
In the 17th century funeral sermons were one of the most frequent forms of public utterances. More than 600 funeral sermons were published in Poland at that time. They were issued by publishing houses scattered all over Poland, and thus each region had its representation in this output. Consequently, funeral sermons are a good source for studies into regional differences in the Polish language of the 17th century. The article deals with this problem on the example of Great Polish prints issued in 17th-century Poznań publishing houses of: the Wolrabs, Wojciech Regulus, Wojciech Młodujewicz, Wojciech Laktański, Jan Rossowski, the Printing Office of Lubrański Academy and the Printing Office of SocietatisIesu. The analysis of texts revealed that they manifest the most typical features of the general Polish of that time, but simultaneously the regional features, differential in character (as for example the inflectional suffix -ej of feminine hard-stem nouns: type głowej), as well as frequentative (as for example the exchange of i and y for e before consonants l, ł: type zrobieł). And although the discussed texts were written not only by the authors originating from Great Poland, they are characterized by common linguistic features. Thus, it must be admitted that the employees of printing firms – the editors, proof-readers, typesetters – played a significant role in the final linguistic creation of the 17th-century printed text.

linguistic norm
The article contributes to the discussion on the interpretation of processes taking place in the contemporary Polish language from two perspectives: diachronic and synchronic (ahistorical, to be precise). The author draws attention to the problem of not accounting for the achievements of diachronic linguistics, which is visible in the studies devoted to the analysis of the language used by the contemporary Poles. This leads to a situation in which the same research questions are not infrequently examined and interpreted in completely different ways in synchronic studies and those dealing with the history of language. Sometimes the differences are so vast that coherent scientific discourse becomes disabled. Enriching the investigation of the processes occurring in the contemporary Polish language with conclusions drawn from analysing historical sources is thus an important claim. Considering the diachronic perspective could be particularly beneficial for discussing the issue of the norm. Since a number of problems with language correctness result from tendencies and processes which have been happening in language for centuries, only becoming acutely aware of them can bring a change in understanding codification and the linguistic norm.

The article concentrates on the etymological and quasi-etymological considerations of Julian Tuwim, his fascination with Slavism and the future of language and word-formative experiments. Of course, there is no mention here about a program manifesto forming a logically ordered lecture in an academic sense. The linguistic knowledge of the poet “can be recognized” in his opinions appearing in Pegazie dęba or in funny poetical puns and metalinguistic utterances. It must be emphasized that in the writer’s opinion, language is not only a substance used for creation of the literary vision of the world. The artist makes efforts to comprehend the secrets of a language system and even draws conclusions of theoretical nature, turning language into a kind of a “protagonist” of his own poetic texts, journalistic texts or texts on the theory of literature.

Middle-Polish period texts
historical-linguistic research
In the Middle-Polish period numerous texts on science and technology were written. Linguists used to pay little attention to those writings – researchers analysed the terminology and noted the morphological manifestations of the scholarly style as well as the manifestations of consistency of historical scientific texts. The issues such as the emergence of the principles of drafting ancillary texts (footnotes, references, bibliography lists); the early development of the scientific press publications (popular-scientific press) in the Polish language and the emergence of new genres of text assisting the scientific aspects of life were of little interest to linguists. Moreover, a large body of historical scientific and technical texts remained entirely unknown to a vast number of readers as the overwhelming majority of those publications have never been republished. In recent years, thanks to–among others–quickly progressing digitisation, it is increasingly easier to access the old scientific and technical texts. Consequently, more and more attention is paid to them by researchers who emphasize that the development of the Polish language was influenced not only by the transformations of the artistic language but also by other stylistic varieties of Polish, including the scholarly style.

The article is an attempt to establish the position of the scholarly achievements of Wojciech Ryszard Rzepka (almost exclusively in the field of the history of the Polish language) on the background of the scholarly activity of his predecessors. The author adopted the output of his teacher and scholarly master, Władysław Kuraszkiewicz, as the most important reference point. The author has examined more closely three currents in the research activity of Wojciech Rzepka: his lexical studies, his editorial and lexicographical output. Concluding the article, the author considered Rzepka most prominent historian of the Polish language in his generation – a researcher whose scholarly achievements are marked by originality and novelty as well as a harmonious combination of the dominating empiricism and understanding for the theory and methodology of historical linguistics.

Komunikacja niewerbalna Koreańczyków na tle tradycji kulturowej. Perspektywa glottodydaktyczna
Janicka, Izabela
The article deals with the question of teaching a nonverbal code in the foreign language learning process of students coming from Korea. The social principles of Confucian philosophy, generally recognized in the Far East, provide an important context explaining the problems of interference in nonverbal communication and of achieving cultural competence. Several types of nonverbal messages have been presented, with focus on the gestures—inadequate for the Polish cultural code—used by Koreans in communicative situations. It has been stressed that such aspects of the language must be considered in teaching Polish in order for students to achieve sociocultural competence parallely to linguistic competence. In the face of worldwide promotion of the Polish language, the inclusion of nonverbal communication and cultural realities should play a bigger role in the teaching programs and be seen as important, although often omitted elements.

Lingwizm w poezji współczesnej jako kategoria odbiorcza
Skibski, Krzysztof
The article offers a proposal for the studies into a particular receptive disposition (derived from the phenomenon of Polish linguistic poetry) as a consequence of recognition of the special structure of a modern poem. The poetics of reception, rooted in theoretical tradition, when juxtaposed with reflection on the structure of verse and in connection with an epistemological value of a metaphor (as a notional construct) may motivate methodological (linguistic) considerations focused on language fundamentals for the reception of poetic texts. Apart from the general presentation of the topic, the article also includes an analytical sample, which deals with the phenomenon of parallelism in modern poetry. This parallelism is an effect of ellipsis in the verse, created in close connection with the poem’s construction and the reader’s reception competence.

Nowe formy wyrazowe dla tradycyjnych znaczeń leksykalnych. O wariantywności słowotwórczej i leksykalnej we współczesnej polszczyźnie (na podstawie badań ankietowych)
Skibski, Krzysztof
Szczyszek, Michał
The article presents the results of the analyses of the material collected by means of questionnaires, in which the informants are asked to complete a specific meaning of a real lexeme (excerpted from the lexicographical studies into modern Polish) with a linguistic form, which—in the opinion of the respondents—is supposed to be a carrier of a particular meaning. Our aim has been to describe new language signs for traditional meanings of linguistic units. Word-formative structures underwent observation; the analyses were also conducted on the lexical level by probing into the semantic connotations revealed in the answers of the informants. In the answers proposed by the respondents one can notice a marked divergence with regard to both form and semantics. On the level of word formation, the proposals of the respondents often go beyond the semantic boundary—defined by a derivative being an original form—of word formation category. Word-formative formal analysis revealed a multitude of elements by means of which these word formation variants were created (there exists a relationship: the more precise the meaning of the original form, the more word formation variants). Moreover, the lexical analysis demonstrated that the semantic divergence of variants was influenced by the fact that the respondents disposed only of the real meanings of the original forms. The respondents sometimes made an attempt (not very successful) at interpretation of the original definition, taking advantage of, for example, the phenomenon of connotation and association: when an evaluating lexeme appeared in a definition, in the process of categorizing variants there dominated an axiological factor over the semantic one. Additionally, it has been observed that in the case of an imprecise or syntactically complex definition or the one determining a poorly known designate, the phenomenon of structural suggestion is observed: a language user proposed a variant derived from one of the words included in definiendum. The completed observations allow scholars to formulate the following hypothesis: the traditional meanings, known from lexicographical studies, are either not understood or mistakenly interpreted, or, cannot be seen as a point of departure for the study of the semantic and formal structure of the Polish language. Thus, the so-called ordinary users of language may not think about the relationship between reality and its intellectual categorization and a linguistic sign being the culmination of a cognitive processes, and this, in turn, illustrates the standard of their knowledge—a common knowledge.

Językowy obraz kobiety w prasie dla pań (na przykładzie „Zwierciadła”, „Przyjaciółki” i „Cosmopolitan”)
Spychała-Reiss, Magdalena
The article presents a linguistic picture of a woman shown in the contemporary women’s magazines. The material studied has been derived from three women’s magazines: Zwierciadło, Cosmopolitan and Przyjaciółka (specifically, from the issues published between December 2006 and February 2008). It has been limited to the lexeme woman; all its synonyms and paraphrases have been disregarded. In the material discussed, this word shows semantic relationships with a repetitive number of subjects. On the basis of observations the author has prepared a list of 12 profiles, which, in turn, got divided into subcategories—facets. The excerpts thus classified and grouped have revealed the fact that a linguistic picture of a woman differs, to some extent, in each of the studied periodicals, depending on the character of the magazine. Woman readers, while identifying themselves with this picture, form exclusive communicative and social communities. Parallely, a linguistic picture of a woman in each of the magazines is not homogenous since it refers to different women. It contains all the attributes of the subject , both the “sufficient” ones (identifying the defined meaning with similar meanings) and the “indispensible” ones (differentiating the lexeme described from the rest of the world) as well as the “typical” ones, relevant from the point of view of the usage of the word in linguistic texts and its relation to other linguistic items.

O potrzebie afiliacji jako pułapce w świecie mediów na przykładzie tekstów zamieszczanych w „Naszym Dzienniku”
Szymborska, Marta
The media, while fulfilling the needs of individuals, may also influence people. A fundamental and relevant psychological need is the desire for acceptance and, connected with it, the need for affiliation. The enhancement of self-esteem achieved by gaining support for the professed opinions, the feeling of security resulting from being a member of a particular group, which eliminates fear, may lead to conformism. The addressor, willing to influence the recipient, can refer to their common interpretative horizon, axiological agreement and common good, thus, by means of ingratiation, can bring about a change in the recipient`s attitude. The aim of the article is to indicate integrative linguistic devices applied by mass media which make the persuasive action easier. Referring to friendship makes persuasion and manipulation much more simple; opposing the community may result in exclusion.

Wybrane leksykalne sposoby wyrażania wartości w pismach uczniów szkół średnich
Wrześniewska-Pietrzak, Marta
The aim of the article is to present characteristic lexical means of expressing values used in secondary school students` compositions between the years 2000 and 2004. The methods of evaluation discussed in the article have been divided into two groups that constitute an example of systemic evaluation (lexemes that evaluate primarily and secondarily) and context evaluation (specifying the meaning of a lexeme, changing the value of a lexeme by context, the phenomenon of evaluation through stereotypes). Moreover, the article points out the devices which can be placed between conventionalised and context means (e.g., multi-evaluating lexemes or proper names referring to the transcendental sphere). The analysis of lexical material enabled researchers to draw a number of conclusions that show a linguistic picture of the world of values present in students` compositions. This picture appears well-ordered and stable. Additionally, it includes all evaluation classes identified in the axiological typology compiled by Jadwiga Puzynina.

Imiona poznaniaków u progu XVII stulecia (na materiale Akt sądu wójtowskiego)
Banderowicz, Kinga
The subject matter of the studies presented in the article are the names of Poznań inhabitants from the beginning of the 17th century, excerpted from a manuscriptal source. The courtly records Akta sądu wójtowskiego present the official and formal variety of the language and consist of the records of court trials. The onyms confirmed in the source render the description of the then name system feasible. It was characterised by the choice of one name, the origin from the Christian antrophonomasticon, the attachment to the onomatologic tradition as well as great popularity of the most fashionable names.

Społeczeństwo poznańskie z perspektywy onimicznej – wstępna rekonstrukcja badawcza
Kołodziejczyk-Trawińska, Aneta
As yet, there have been no comprehensive study on the historical anthroponymy of Poznań and Great Poland. On the map of Poland this region constitutes a kind of terra incognita. The article presented is a part of the project whose objective is to compile names and surnames of the inhabitants of Great Poland. The conclusions included in the article have a character of a research reconnaissance and concern the 17th and 18th-century surnames of the inhabitants of the left-bank Poznań (the names have been excerpted from birth certificates of the parish of St. Adalbert). The article presents Polish surnames formed as a result of appellative nomination. Since the semantics of the derivative stems of the studied anthroponyms is tightly connected with the world of plants and animals as well as the material and cultural manifestations of the community described in the article, the people`s surnames have been divided into 4 groups according to: 1) external attributes, 2) psychic features, 3) interactions with the outer world, 4) position of a person in the society. The conclusions drawn on the basis of the analysis can be summarised as the following theses: 1) the material collected is semantically heterogeneous, 2) the reasons for choosing a particular name are not always obvious, 3) the material gathered only slightly reflects the cultural and linguistic specific character of the studied community, 4) the majority of appellatives motivating surnames belong to general Polish vocabulary.

O pająku, duszy i łacińskiej konstrukcji accusativus cum infinitivo, czyli jak zrozumieć jeden z wersetów Psałterza floriańskiego
Kuźmicki, Marcin
The author of the article, through the analysis of one of the verses from Psałterz floriański (“Florian Psalter”), is trying to understand where the difficulties in understanding this old Polish text arise. Is it exclusively the fault of a medieval translator and the Polish written language that had not been completely formed by then or rather is it a contemporary reader that is to blame? Taking into account at least a number of aspects connected with the work of a medieval translator and copyist , such as: the lack of a consistent Latin base text—the canonical version, widely known, that is to appear no sooner than in the print era; insufficient knowledge of Psałterz floriański by heart; different structures of the Latin language which the translator tried to express by choosing Polish words that would not violate the structure of the translation base—all these factors make the author of the article defend the medieval writer whose work requires in-depth and repetitive reading before it starts revealing its secrets to the modern reader.

Świat wartości swoich i obcych w Krzyżakach Henryka Sienkiewicza
Mariak, Leonarda
The article discusses the linguistic devices of the evaluation of the characters created in the realities of the novel (fictitious and historical) connected with two opposite groups: the Poles (domestic) and the Teutonic Knights (foreign). The analysis of the material has revealed the persuasive mechanisms applied by Henryk Sienkiewicz in order to exert influence on the readers’ attitudes and their system of values. The repertoire of linguistic and semantic devices used for evaluation is very diversified and, among others, includes: synonymic passages giving names to the representatives of both groups, the names of values (positive or negative) and the phrases describing actions, character features and people’s attitudes evaluated as positive or negative, connecting synonymous names (of Poles and the Teutonic Knights) with different parts of speech; statements with specific connotations (positive or negative) informing about the actions, behaviours and appearance of the characters; stylistic means such as: similes, metaphors, epithets used in an expressive and evaluating function. Additionally, the conclusions drawn from the research shed light on Henryk Sienkiewicz’s writing techniques. It has become feasible to reconstruct (indirectly) the writer’s attitudes towards life and the system of values.
