O wybranych mechanizmach kondesacji treści w przekazach medialnych
Grzelka, Monika
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
This article revolves around research into the language of the media with special emphasis placed on a description of the fundamental mechanisms of condensing content in printed and audio and visual media. Condensation is among the basic tools of content accumulation; it is related to simplifying the message, generalization and stylistic deformations. Mechanisms applied to summarize have been identified within various areas, including construing messages and releasing to media as well as modes of organizing the content. Of importance here is the trend of replacing verbal messages with visual messages (tables, photos, information graphics, charts, coverage). While condensation is reflected in media as a communication-related activity strictly functionalized within a message, in its structure (cf. the summarizing role of titles, leads, visualizations), it is also conditioned by genre-related issues (cf. news, previews etc.) and most times results from the broadcaster’s strategic efforts.

Angielskie nazwy zawodów w polskich serialach obyczajowych
Kaczmarek, Anna
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
This article discusses borrowings from English related to the theme aspect of profession names including those adapted in Polish and those typical of professional dialects and formerly not recorded in any lexicographic sources. The research material includes dialogues extracted from Polish serial dramas (referred to by the author as advance serial dramas). The excerpted borrowings from English are primarily oriented to business, media or advertising. This type of words can function in the Polish language because of the language’s nominal need. While many English words referring to professions are used chiefly in social dialects, more and more frequently they tend to be absorbed by general Polish.

O pewnych zasadach sztuki publicystycznej w prasie opiniotwórczej: temporalność i argumentacyjność
Kula, Agnieszka
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The rules of opinion journalism, presented in numerous source materials, indicate that an opinion article is constructed in line with the argumentative order: the right selection of arguments is to result in proving a thesis put forward in the text. However, more and more frequently opinion journalists offer the readers an attempt at finding out about the meanderings of politics or the economy single-handedly: temporal narration ordering fragments of texts allows to trace events “frame by frame”. Short sentences, nominal statements, verbs impersonal forms, in the present tense: the reader has no problem with following them. The reader learns about the answers to basic questions important in construing journalism information. Creation of some sort of a report is a transformation stage in an opinion journalist’s work; to a reader this is an extra and superfluous element. The phenomenon of temporality is also related to the fact that the analysed texts are about themselves: by resorting to the first person singular/plural, the author or authors describe their journalist activities, meetings with specific individuals (sources of information), problems with data verification, sometimes with obtaining data. In the course of analyses, the following relation emerges: redundancy – condensation necessitating a more in-depth analysis with respect to the rules underlying contemporary opinion journalism genres.

Poznanie poza językiem. Przypadek religijnego doświadczenia mistycznego a jego wysłowienie
Sakaguchi, Alicja
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza
An analysis of the experiences, insights and proclamations by mystics and prophets from various epochs unveils the characteristics of individuals exposed to long experiences and holistic (or integral) cognition. A mystic transformation affects the mode of speaking and communicating with the world. Language with its stereotypical phrases and connotations certainly limits human cognition. However, in the process of their transpersonal experience, mystics go beyond this barrier and overcome cognitive limitations including the flaws of human language. In order to present an altogether “different” space of reality shared by mystics, and to share their proclamations and teaching with a large audience, mystics apply very specific linguistic tools like the metaphor, allegory, antithesis, paradox, analogy, symbol, quotations from the Bible, hyperbole, parallelism, chiasm and, last but not least, parable. An act of viewing the prophecy and epiphany-related language reflecting the authors’ synoptic (mystic) awareness “from the inside” makes it possible to identify archetypal criteria of the mystic experience and to establish the correct meaning of the key expressions (the sacred) and sacral acts of speech.

Tabularność wiersza wolnego i jej konsekwencje lekturowe
Skibski, Krzysztof
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
This article touches upon the tabular nature of free verse; here it indicates the individuality of verses in the text structure resulting from its non-linear character (spatiality) as a result of free verse. In other words, any text written in free verse is potentially a structure of coincidental syntax e.g. as a result of maximised equivalence each single verse is semantically independent and primarily independent with respect to syntax from the other verses. This article relies on the assumption that reception of a text written in free verse is non-linear and therefore tabular. This assumption is based on a conviction that the tabular nature is not a revelation of the new media or the change in perceiving texts propagated in the new media. Rather, it is a phenomenon typical of poetry; it started to accompany poetry when the notion of free verse was introduced. The text is illustrated with examples of poems by contemporary Polish authors.

Media publiczne w Polsce a popularyzacja wiedzy o języku polskim
Grzelka, Monika
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
Kula, Agnieszka
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
One of the statutory provisions of public media is to popularize the knowledge of the Polish language – the present authors analyse diversified aspects determining the effectiveness of the execution of the task and the media’s commitment to its social responsibility, and proceed to evaluate the basic assignments and responsibilities involved in the journalistic profession. These responsibilities result largely from the reception of the profession by the general public, and from those that emerge within the context of studies on language authority figures in present-day Poland. The next stage of the analysis involves an evaluation of the activities of all-Polish national broadcasters in view of their practical implementation and execution of the commitments set in Art. 21, Section 1a, item 8 of the Radio and Television Act (diffusion and divulgation of the knowledge of the Polish language). The remaining part of the article, including postulative claims, results from an analysis of the activities popularizing the knowledge on Polish available in the media and from the conviction of the necessity of expanding them beyond just grammaticality and correctness in the language use.

Pierwiastek onomastyczny w polskiej terminologii sportowej
Nowowiejski, Bogusław
Uniwersytet w Białymstoku
Polish sports vocabulary uses a variety of sources, including lexical elements of various origin that include foreign lexical elements. A fairly significant part of this vocabulary consists of words and expressions that include in their composition onomastic, toponymic and anthroponymic components. An analysis of this vocabulary proves that, from among sports terms with the onomastic component, nominations that stem from the Mediterranean, Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon traditions are decidedly dominant, whereas those of Polish origin are rare and infrequent.

Czy w najbliższym czasie powstanie język śląski?
Siuciak, Mirosława
Uniwersytet Śląski w Katowicach
The article embarks on a critical analysis of the issue, recently reverberating across the country, of granting a status of a regional language to the Silesian ethnolect. Within the relevant public space, the problem interlocks the three following types of discourse: legal, political and scientific. Onto thus formulated discourse superimposesthe common perception of the unresolved tension of the augmented efforts for revival of the self-identity and political positioning in the Silesian society. These efforts are, in turn, related to a very strong feeling of ethnic identity of the Silesians, who like to emphasize their cultural distinctiveness in everyday communicative situations. The notion of the regional language is a special legal category in EU legislation and has been introduced to Polish legislative discourse after this particular language status has been granted to Kashubian. Currently, a number of political and social initiatives are being undertaken in Upper Silesia that are aimed at the administrative recognition and the application of the same legal category to the Silesian ethnolect. As these actions are mainly undertaken by organizations that demand political autonomy for Silesia and put forward demands for the recognition of the Silesian nationality, academic circles are in the main wary, if not apprehensive. As a result, the role of the elite seeking to work out grammatical standards and spelling convention for the Silesian language in the making, being created in a top-down fashion, has been largely taken over by local associations of people wishing to revive the Silesian regional dialect, with a little support of professional and academic staff. Future fortunes of the would-be Silesian language depend on many factors: on whether the legal status of a regional language will be granted or not, on the quality of work of those who have embarked on attempts to carry out agenda that includes works on the standard spelling convention for the language, and on the Silesians themselves and their acceptance of the solutions that are to be imposed in a top-down fashion. Another contributing factor will undoubtedly be the elevation of the Silesian language status through a creation of the language corpus (literature, dictionaries, course books) and broadening of its functional scope.

Komunikacja niewerbalna Koreańczyków na tle tradycji kulturowej. Perspektywa glottodydaktyczna
Janicka, Izabela
The article deals with the question of teaching a nonverbal code in the foreign language learning process of students coming from Korea. The social principles of Confucian philosophy, generally recognized in the Far East, provide an important context explaining the problems of interference in nonverbal communication and of achieving cultural competence. Several types of nonverbal messages have been presented, with focus on the gestures—inadequate for the Polish cultural code—used by Koreans in communicative situations. It has been stressed that such aspects of the language must be considered in teaching Polish in order for students to achieve sociocultural competence parallely to linguistic competence. In the face of worldwide promotion of the Polish language, the inclusion of nonverbal communication and cultural realities should play a bigger role in the teaching programs and be seen as important, although often omitted elements.

Lingwizm w poezji współczesnej jako kategoria odbiorcza
Skibski, Krzysztof
The article offers a proposal for the studies into a particular receptive disposition (derived from the phenomenon of Polish linguistic poetry) as a consequence of recognition of the special structure of a modern poem. The poetics of reception, rooted in theoretical tradition, when juxtaposed with reflection on the structure of verse and in connection with an epistemological value of a metaphor (as a notional construct) may motivate methodological (linguistic) considerations focused on language fundamentals for the reception of poetic texts.
Apart from the general presentation of the topic, the article also includes an analytical sample, which deals with the phenomenon of parallelism in modern poetry. This parallelism is an effect of ellipsis in the verse, created in close connection with the poem’s construction and the reader’s reception competence.

Nowe formy wyrazowe dla tradycyjnych znaczeń leksykalnych. O wariantywności słowotwórczej i leksykalnej we współczesnej polszczyźnie (na podstawie badań ankietowych)
Skibski, Krzysztof
Szczyszek, Michał
The article presents the results of the analyses of the material collected by means of questionnaires, in which the informants are asked to complete a specific meaning of a real lexeme (excerpted from the lexicographical studies into modern Polish) with a linguistic form, which—in the opinion of the respondents—is supposed to be a carrier of a particular meaning. Our aim has been to describe new language signs for traditional meanings of linguistic units. Word-formative structures underwent observation; the analyses were also conducted on the lexical level by probing into the semantic connotations revealed in the answers of the informants.
In the answers proposed by the respondents one can notice a marked divergence with regard to both form and semantics. On the level of word formation, the proposals of the respondents often go beyond the semantic boundary—defined by a derivative being an original form—of word formation category. Word-formative formal analysis revealed a multitude of elements by means of which these word formation variants were created (there exists a relationship: the more precise the meaning of the original form, the more word formation variants). Moreover, the lexical analysis demonstrated that the semantic divergence of variants was influenced by the fact that the respondents disposed only of the real meanings of the original forms. The respondents sometimes made an attempt (not very successful) at interpretation of the original definition, taking advantage of, for example, the phenomenon of connotation and association: when an evaluating lexeme appeared in a definition, in the process of categorizing variants there dominated an axiological factor over the semantic one. Additionally, it has been observed that in the case of an imprecise or syntactically complex definition or the one determining a poorly known designate, the phenomenon of structural suggestion is observed: a language user proposed a variant derived from one of the words included in definiendum. The completed observations allow scholars to formulate the following hypothesis: the traditional meanings, known from lexicographical studies, are either not understood or mistakenly interpreted, or, cannot be seen as a point of departure for the study of the semantic and formal structure of the Polish language. Thus, the so-called ordinary users of language may not think about the relationship between reality and its intellectual categorization and a linguistic sign being the culmination of a cognitive processes, and this, in turn, illustrates the standard of their knowledge—a common knowledge.

Językowy obraz kobiety w prasie dla pań (na przykładzie „Zwierciadła”, „Przyjaciółki” i „Cosmopolitan”)
Spychała-Reiss, Magdalena
The article presents a linguistic picture of a woman shown in the contemporary women’s magazines. The material studied has been derived from three women’s magazines: Zwierciadło, Cosmopolitan and Przyjaciółka (specifically, from the issues published between December 2006 and February 2008). It has been limited to the lexeme woman; all its synonyms and paraphrases have been disregarded. In the material discussed, this word shows semantic relationships with a repetitive number of subjects. On the basis of observations the author has prepared a list of 12 profiles, which, in turn, got divided into subcategories—facets. The excerpts thus classified and grouped have revealed the fact that a linguistic picture of a woman differs, to some extent, in each of the studied periodicals, depending on the character of the magazine. Woman readers, while identifying themselves with this picture, form exclusive communicative and social communities.
Parallely, a linguistic picture of a woman in each of the magazines is not homogenous since it refers to different women. It contains all the attributes of the subject , both the “sufficient” ones (identifying the defined meaning with similar meanings) and the “indispensible” ones (differentiating the lexeme described from the rest of the world) as well as the “typical” ones, relevant from the point of view of the usage of the word in linguistic texts and its relation to other linguistic items.

O potrzebie afiliacji jako pułapce w świecie mediów na przykładzie tekstów zamieszczanych w „Naszym Dzienniku”
Szymborska, Marta
The media, while fulfilling the needs of individuals, may also influence people. A fundamental and relevant psychological need is the desire for acceptance and, connected with it, the need for affiliation. The enhancement of self-esteem achieved by gaining support for the professed opinions, the feeling of security resulting from being a member of a particular group, which eliminates fear, may lead to conformism. The addressor, willing to influence the recipient, can refer to their common interpretative horizon, axiological agreement and common good, thus, by means of ingratiation, can bring about a change in the recipient`s attitude. The aim of the article is to indicate integrative linguistic devices applied by mass media which make the persuasive action easier. Referring to friendship makes persuasion and manipulation much more simple; opposing the community may result in exclusion.

Wybrane leksykalne sposoby wyrażania wartości w pismach uczniów szkół średnich
Wrześniewska-Pietrzak, Marta
The aim of the article is to present characteristic lexical means of expressing values used in secondary school students` compositions between the years 2000 and 2004.
The methods of evaluation discussed in the article have been divided into two groups that constitute an example of systemic evaluation (lexemes that evaluate primarily and secondarily) and context evaluation (specifying the meaning of a lexeme, changing the value of a lexeme by context, the phenomenon of evaluation through stereotypes). Moreover, the article points out the devices which can be placed between conventionalised and context means (e.g., multi-evaluating lexemes or proper names referring to the transcendental sphere). The analysis of lexical material enabled researchers to draw a number of conclusions that show a linguistic picture of the world of values present in students` compositions. This picture appears well-ordered and stable. Additionally, it includes all evaluation classes identified in the axiological typology compiled by Jadwiga Puzynina.

Retoryka a niejęzykowe środki komunikacji
Sobczak, Barbara
The subject matter of the text is an analysis of the meaning of non-linguistic devices in communication from the point of view of rhetoric understood as an art of speaking aimed at persuasion. The starting point for the author`s considerations is the thesis that the persuasive potential, which is possessed by a speaker, and which is about to be released at the actio stage, stems from such factors as the speaker`s credibility, competence, similarity to the recipient, sympathy they arouse and charisma—all these factors, to a greater or smaller degree, are built from extralinguistic elements. Thus, the efficiency of a rhetoric act depends not only on the ability to construct a text (according to the rules of inventio, dispositio and elocutio) but also on the method of its realization (acto). However, the most important is the assumption that the recipient: his needs, predispositions, opinions, attitudes and character determine the selection of appropriate persuasive devices including invention (topics and argumentation), elocution (the choice of a linguistic code) as well as the act of speaking itself.
The non-linguistic devices discussed, embrace gestures, facial expressions, body movements and positions, physical distance, appearance and clothes as well as a paralinguistic aspect of communication (connected with the speaker`s voice, their physical attributes and the manner of speaking). From the point of view of rhetoric, in order to use these non-linguistic devices one has to obey specific rules. These are the rules of: appropriateness, functionality and credibility. Following the rule of appropriateness requires the correspondence of nonverbal behaviours with the speech style, with the type of the auditorium and the speaking situation (including time and place). From the point of view of the functionality principle, it is crucial to attach function to nonverbal behaviours intended to achieve a particular goal, whereas the credibility principle requires a speaker to build appropriate relations with the auditorium by means of nonlinguistic devices. The means of realization of these principles must be updated each time in a particular speaking situation, with prime consideration for the needs and the character of the recipient as well as the aim of the utterance.

O językowej deprecjacji potencjalnego klienta na przykładzie tytułów polskich i angielskich poradników
Fabiszak, Joanna
Uniwersytet Szczeciński
The study discusses the more controversial ways for naming and addressing target recipients of books of the “how-to” variety. The analysis deals with several thousand Polish and English handbooks and guidebooks for the general public that attribute a priori negative, unacceptable socially derogatory features to the potential receiver, or that describe him or her with insulting and disparaging words commonly regarded as even vulgar. Apparently, the titles based in their making on an unfriendly strategy towards the recipient – apart from being catchy and shocking in its form – also perform numerous informative and persuasive functions: from giving information on the content of the book to urging to purchase by way of appealing to ambition or complexes of the buyer.
A comparison of the offer available in Poland and elsewhere has shown that the policy with regard to titles adopted by Polish publishers is fairly conservative. Unlike their English counterparts, Polish publishers put much effort not to offend the potential customer, which effectively prevents them from using unconventional forms of book promotion. This sort of “apprehension” of being rude towards the potential customer acts, at the same time, as a deterrent to committing abuse and is a safeguard in our book trade preventing the breach of the principle of appropriateness and the invasion of excessive vulgarity.

Ile form bezokolicznikowych jest w paradygmacie czasownika? Problem trybu przypuszczającego bezokolicznika
Gębka-Wolak, Małgorzata
Uniwersytet Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu
The article aims at establishing whether, within the range of the formal criteria, sequences composed of the particle “by” subordinated to an infinitive form of the verb can be interpreted as analytical infinitive forms of the subjunctive mood. The conclusions based on formal tests demonstrate that it is feasible to reject the concept of the modification of the infinitive by the grammatical category of mood. The most coherent interpretation of the structures infinitive + by is one that describes them not as analytical forms of infinitive forms of the subjective mood but rather as constructions that combine the forms of two lexemes: the infinitive form of the verb and the form of mood operator.

O kształcie debaty publicznej (casus intelektualisty)
Grzelka, Monika
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The study comprises material from press articles that deal with the notion of “intelligentsia” from the year 2006. The discussion, focused on the burning question whether a social group of “intelligentsia” really exists, whether there are any distinguishing features of the group, and who might be included in it, has been prompted by recalling A. Solzhenitsyn’s derogatory statement describing this social sub-class, i.e. his remarks on obrazovanschina. Different positions that include diametrically opposing interpretations are then presented, from the characterization proposed by K. Libelt to present-day definitions. The material has been investigated with the application of interdisciplinary tools. The anthropological approach to ritualisation has proved to be particularly useful, as well as the findings and established facts related to the rationality of communicative action formulated by J. Habermas.

Znajomość frazeologii regionalnej wśród poznaniaków
Kołodziejczyk, Marta
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article discusses the issues related to the knowledge of the regional phraseology among present-day users of the local Poznań dialect. The research material is excerpted from a survey conducted among 120 local inhabitants within the age bracket of 15–87. Based on the results of the survey it is fair to conclude that the level of usage of the discussed phaseological units is highly dependent on the age of respondents, with the group of middle-aged people having the highest competence in the usage of dialectal forms. The most widely used expressions and phrases include those that describe the properties of human beings – physical and mental features and one’s behaviour or activities. The examination of the collected material allows us to compare the frequency within particular groups of phraseologisms that can be distinguished in the local dialect. It turns out that the most stable word groups are those units that have their counterparts in standard Polish, whereas the least stable are loan translations and the paraphrases from the German language. The article also indicates the similarities between the semantic structure of the phrasological layer in Poznań dialect and the structure of Polish colloquial vocabulary.

Redundancja w mediach. Rozważania wstępne
Kula, Agnieszka
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
Redundancy, most frequently discussed in works on computer science, telecommunications and the theory of information, denotes in linguistics the excess of information, i.e. this amount of information that exceeds the minimum required for a message to be understood. The excess, that can perform a number of essential functions in spoken and written text, has not yet been comprehensively addressed linguistically. A study on redundancy in modern media makes it possible to indicate – with the application of stylistic and pragmalinguistic tools – the methods for influencing the recipient. The present article considers such issues as the function of a redundant transmission of information (message) and its linguistic exponents. One of the most important tasks of redundancy, i.e. making a media statement more attractive, is presented in detail. The author also indicates a group of media messages in which redundancy is applied to blur or disintegrate the text and verbosity is conducive to its further convolutedness and esotericism.

Konotacje tekstowe a pojęciowy model słowa (na przykładzie wyrazu bluszcz w poezji młodopolskiej)
Kuryłowicz, Beata
Uniwersytet w Białymstoku
The present sketch attempts to provide a semantic description of the word bluszcz [ivy] in “Young Poland” literary period in order to present and prove the importance and the place of the vast array of textual connotations in the conceptual model of the word. The concept of an open-ended definition and the principle of internal motivation have all made it possible to reveal the textual connotations of the word bluszcz within the scope of its different degree of establishment and precision. These are the features that, though weak and fleeting, still perform very important functions because they introduce order into the semantic structure of the word and bond it together. Each and every distinctive feature has a strictly defined place in the structure. To reveal these various semantic components would not be possible with the application of traditional methods of semantic analysis.

Frazeologiczne innowacje wymieniające w powieściach Solaris i Dzienniki gwiazdowe Stanisława Lema
Nawrocka, Małgorzata
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article attempts to analyze the phraseological innovations that introduce partial replacement of phrases in the novel Solaris and a collection of short stories Dzienniki gwiazdowe [Memoirs of a Space Traveller]. The innovations, being the result of a replacement of a component with another one which seems to the creator of a text more appropriate, attractive, or simply more fit to the text, have been classified in relation to their approach towards the context and situational conditioning. Semantic relations between the replaced and the replacing component and their influence upon the change in the meaning of a phaseologism are considered. The basic assumption is to investigate the function replacing innovations perform in science fiction literature. The functional criterion has been adopted as a basis for establishing the usefulness of an innovation. This criterion makes it possible to evaluate whether a given innovation is semantically and stylistically correct, whether it is appropriately attuned to the context, whether its meaning renders the communicative intentions of the writer, and, finally, whether it satisfies the assigned stylistic and stylization functions.

W sprawie wpływów języka niemieckiego na polszczyznę
Nowowiejski, Bogusław
Uniwersytet w Białymstoku
The basic and underlying assumption for the article is that the hitherto written literature of the subject lacks a general and comprehensive work combining and integrating the state-of-the-art knowledge on Polish and German linguistic contacts, particularly within the scope of the extent and the nature of this influence. Hence, attempts have been made to provide a holistic presentation of the most important results of the influence of German on Polish, including into the scope of interest not only standard Germanisms to be found in dictionaries (from the oldest ones to the most recent), but also the effects of this influence on Polish dialects, regional varieties of non-standard Polish and sociolectals, the influence of the German language within the scope of word formation, including loan translations of various kinds and phraseological units, commonly used sayings and proverbs, and, finally, proper nouns, anthroponyms and place names existing in the Polish–language areas in particular, as well as eponyms.

Wariancja rzeczowników w Nowym słowniku poprawnej polszczyzny PWN
Ruszkowski, Marek
Uniwersytet Humanistyczno-Przyrodniczy Jana Kochanowskiego w Kielcach
Linguistic variants are elements that are considered identically in terms of functionality, though they differ formally. The present article discusses variant forms of nouns. The study refers both to variants in the strict sense, i.e. identical in terms of function, and oscillating variants, i.e. those that differ in one quality, i.e. chronology, frequency, social range, stylistic character or the degree of expressiveness or emotiveness. The examples have been excerpted from Nowy słownik poprawnej polszczyzny PWN [The PWN New Dictionary of Correct Polish Usage]. The collected material has been classified into several groups depending on the relations between variants defined by means of qualifiers and abbreviations. Formal and linguistic expressions of noun variantivity are also presented. The examples under scrutiny indicate that the linguistic norm (standard) accepts far more nominal variant forms than the linguistic custom presents as it has sanctioned only a certain part of the analysed examples. A detailed and thorough study on the functioning of nominal variants in the linguistic custom is, however, difficult to carry out.

Komentarz jako gatunek w telewizyjnych programach informacyjnych

One of the new elements of a news programme, evolved as a result of the changes in the its formal structure, is the commentary, which introduces some variety to the poetics of the news story as well as makes the actual presentation more attractive. The issue has not been, however, adequately addressed and discussed in the literature of the subject and there are only selective characteristics of some of its varieties available. The present article provides a description of different types of the informative commentary and its particular place within the structure of a programme for this genre is dependable on the information it refers to and on the involved relation between the two (how it is organized by and organizes). Additionally, the article discusses the form of the commentary and conceivable perceptional planes in which it can be manifested.

Ekspresywizmy leksykalne w „Przewodniku Katolickim” z lat 1895–2005. Peiorativa pierwotne
Wiatrowski, Przemysław
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article discusses emotive expressions that express negative emotions of the sender excerpted from Przewodnik Katolicki from the years 1895–2005. The author studies nominal primal negative emotional expressions that belong to the class of personal names (nomina personae), i.e. words that are semantically non-derivable and whose meanings include a fixed emotional component that is obligatory revealed in the statement. This group of units also includes words that are derived morphologically but the latter group includes only those words in which the formant is not the carrier of emotional marking. The excerpted lexical elements have been semantically analyzed. The analysis made it possible to identify their expressive meanings. In the reconstruction of their basic components (linguistic signs of emotion that are indicators and not carriers of meaning but whose signifieds correspond to a verbal proposition.), different factors that co-create the emotional value of peiorativa are considered, particularly the contextual influence. The analysis of the research material makes it possible to prove that the emotionally charged words used by the journalists writing for the weekly make their statement more powerful, add to its sharpness or pungency and, therefore, enhance the process of shaping the personal outlook of its readers.

Problem semantycznych innowacji frazeologicznych w tekstach literackich
Skibski, Krzysztof
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The author attempts to consider the phenomenon of phraseological innovativeness in artistic texts. The adopted perceptional perspective (enhancing the significance of variantivity in phraseology) makes it possible to propose controversial, yet individual, categories for the analysis of particular contextual situations in which the analysed updated phaseological units occur. The fictitiousness of literature, its semantic instability – the openness for interpretation – allow us to tentatively reflect on the kind of various phaseological innovations in the function of the elements involved in sensemaking processes. The modest material illustration provided is just a corroboration of the methodological invention.

Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
This article is a part of research project that focuses on citations in media coverage in Poland after 1989; two earlier installments of the article have been included in earlier publications of “Poznańskie Studia Polonistyczne”. Part Three provides a discussion on and characteristics of the category of the average man in the street, ordinary people whose utterances are increasingly included in the journalistic narration. Taking the notion of everyday life, with which the demand for an ordinary man in the media is closely linked, as a starting point in the discussion, the authors proceed to characterize citations, along with their explanatory attributions, indicate their textual functions and analyse the categories that are revealed within the process: anonymity, transparency and singularity.

Kompetencja komunikacyjna Romów. Strategie grzecznościowe w polsko-romskich relacjach interkulturowych
Grzelak, Eliza
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
Grzelak, Joanna
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The authors of the article evaluate social-communicative problems of the minority group of Roma Gypsies in Poland. The existing low linguistic competence is additionally constrained by the accompanying insufficient communicative competence. The authors emphasize that teaching of a foreign language, in this particular case of the dominant language in the country, is effective only when it is simultaneously enhanced by a corresponding interaction between the two cultures in question. The authors indicate the barriers to cultural integration that hamper the community’s capacity and capability of establishing the relationships between these communities that would be based on partnership and mutual respect: these barriers include the orality and the tabooisation of Romany culture as well as its unfamiliarity to the Poles. This, in turn, generates patterns for statements and utterances in which ceremonial patterns are of secondary importance. It is rather the pragmatic factor that governs a particular linguistic behaviour: the Romany people simply want to understand the message and want to be understood. The article stresses that the present unfortunate social communication can be changed in the future by the implementation of appropriate activities within educational strategies directed towards the target group.

Konteksty występowania leksemów Polak, Polska i polski w zbiorze modlitw powszechnych Módlmy się wspólnie o. Ireneusza Żołnierczyka
Pałucka-Czerniak, Iwona
Uniwersytet Zielonogórski
The article presents the results of a pragmalinguistic analysis of the linguistic contexts of the lexemes Polska, Polak and polski (Poland, Pole, Polish) in the collection of common prayers written by Father Ireneusz Żołnierczyk in 1984. The analysis allows the author to present the way of speaking and modelling the thinking on homeland within a specific given community, place and time. The material under scrutiny consists of the collection of common prayers that is to provide a clear illustration for the mechanisms to create and sustain the sense of religious and national unity. The collection, in the form of an auxiliary book for liturgy, had in the past a particular impact as a pattern providing a template in creating specific communiques during the litugy of the high mass in the Catholic Church. The supplications in the prayers execute a well-established and fixed general pattern, shaping the model of a believer as a hard-working, industrious and the virtuous Pole-Catholic. Within the lexical layer of the prayers there is no particularisation or direct references to political, economic and social situation in Poland, though the participants in the common prayer are in position to contextually read a given passage or hear a modified supplication (appropriately adjusted to specific or current events).

Trigramy, czyli powtarzalne trzywyrazowe struktury w dialogach zadaniowych
Szczyszek, Michał
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The present article analyses trigrams – words constructions that have properties of phrasemes. The studied trigrams have been excerpted from task-oriented dialogues (conducted between participants of a linguistic experiment). It turns out that phrasematic trigrams perform different communication and semantic functions: establishing and enhancing contact, feedback positive, “simple adverbiality” and “complex adverbiality”. The article is a follow-up to the author’s previous article on bi-grams: Bi-grams – Repetitive Two-word-structures in Task-oriented Dialogues.

Innowacje frazeologiczne w świetle danych korpusowych
Fliciński, Piotr
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
This article aims at highlighting available possibilities offered by web-based language corpuses to support the phraseologist and experts in phraseography in their research methods. From this introduction, the author proceeds to show the ways to keep trace of the changeable character of the phraseological resources in the Polish language in the increasingly democratized cultural space, focusing on the relations between innovative phraseological constructions (neophraseologisms, shifts in meaning and polymorphic type of the form of explicit language usage) and the phraseological norm in modern Polish language. Theoretical considerations are then followed by the analytical part of the article in which the author presents a number of research improvements related to the study of phraseological innovations with the application of the National Corpus of Polish, with three examples provided (powtarzać coś jak mantrę [literally: to repeat something like a mantra], chodzić na rzęsach [to do everything in order to accomplish something, or to make whoopee, to paint the town red] and z prędkością/szybkością karabinu maszynowego – jak karabin maszynowy [to talk a mile a minute]).

Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
This article reports part of a research project currently carried out by the authors devoted to the analysis of quoted speech used by Polish journalists in their discourse after 1989. The first part of the article was published in the previous volume of Poznańskie Studia Polonistyczne. The present part focuses on the characteristics of the participants (parties) in journalistic information. Prevailing and determining factors related to the number and the type of participants in journalistic information are presented, and fundamental functions of speech verbs (verba dicenti) are indicated. Citation is the most explicit form of inclusion of other-discourse in one’s discourse. The second part of the study provides more detailed analysis that includes the following categories: the category of witnesses, experts (practitioners) and that of experts (theoreticians). The third part of the article is due to be published soon.

Medialne obrazy świata z perspektywy retorycznej (na przykładzie recepcji medialnej śmierci i pochówku Czesława Miłosza)
Sobczak, Barbara
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article attempts to contribute to the discussion on the methods used in creating the world in the media, viewed from the rhetorical perspective. Implementations of the rhetorical principle of the adaptation of the utterance to the context and the situation of the audience to which exposition is directed (cf. K. Burke’s idea of identification and the so-called “identification” principle) are followed by both linguistic structuring of the utterance and the following argumentation may effect in the media content messages that are not only different but, frequently, create opposing images of the world. How far they may differ in their message is then shown with the example of the media reception of the death and the burial of Czesław Miłosz manifested in the presentations offered by two daily newspapers: Gazeta Wyborcza and Nasz Dziennik. The excerpted source material shows how the multitude of receivers designed to be reached by different mass media communication channels and diversity in taste and expectations of audiences makes it possible for journalists to create subjective interpretations of the world. Once created and tailored to the context of the audience, they function in parallel pathways and, should a clash between them ensue, the only outcome is that their rhetorical nature gets even more accentuated. With these circumstances given, what we experience then is a situation when different truths collide, while each of them surfaces within a given context of human conversation and each is validated by its respective audience to be reached and goals to be attained.

Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article is a part of outcome from a research project carried out by the author and devoted to quotations in Polish media and mass communication after 1989. The present elaboration includes an analysis of journalistic information, viewed as a particular kind of journalistic communication distinguishable from column writing due to its specific functions. A number of monographs and text books devoted to the development of the writing skills required for producing media texts are examined to single out those properties of journalistic information that the authors consider to be the most important. Within the context of the indications obtained in the process and the factographic pact between the author and the reader as it has been described by Zbigniew Bauer, the functions of quotation in direct speech are discussed. An attempt has been made to introduce a classification of persons using journalistic text in their presentations, while one of the their categories, a participant of described events, is examined more thoroughly.

Semantyka i funkcje barwy czerwonej w Solaris Stanisława Lema
Kaptur, Ewa
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article introduces a contribution into the theoretical reflections presented in a series of publications on the names of colours in the poetical output and prose writing of different authors. The author examines the semantic field of the colour that most frequently appears in the novel, its exemplifications in the text and the functions it performs. The article identifies not only hypernyms of the colour red but also non-basic names and hyponyms that refer to the prototypical exemplars of fire and blood. In total, the author analysed 43 primary and secondary names for the colour red exemplified mainly by adjectives and verbs. The collected names of the colour have been assigned to two main thematic circles, i.e. nature (atmospheric phenomena, ocean and its inhabitants) and human being (body, clothes).

W poszukiwaniu języka. O retoryce Partii Kobiet
Sobczak, Barbara
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
To make the political presence of women more visible in modern public discourse it is necessary to work out a language that would represent them appropriately. An analysis of the rhetoric of the Women’s Party (Polish: Partia Kobiet), established in 2007, shows how this problem is handled by the officials of the party. The starting point for the discussion is the thesis that rhetoric discourse is initiated and shaped by a given rhetoric situation (as understood by L.F. Bitzer). In the analysed instance, it is determined by: 1) social and political circumstances surrounding the emergence of the party, no deep-rooted feminist tradition in particular; negativism in the approach towards women’s movements in general reflecting senses and moods dominating within society, marginalisation of women’s issues and women’s voices in mainstream political discourse, 2) historical conditioning and culturally dominant position of the male model of discourse in public address, 3) the attempt to get involved in the discourse as wide audience as possible, coupled with the belief that the sense of unity is to be based on the gender identity. The analysis of the texts available on the web page of the party, viewed as being fully of representative nature for the party, shows that the rhetoric of the Women’s Party is not heterogeneous. It oscillates between the rhetoric of co-operation (through the agency of which the party looks for tools instrumental for achieving some kind of agreement and dialogue in the public debate) and the rhetoric of hatred, already well-established in Polish political discourse (which undermines the formerly mentioned conciliatory attitude in dialogue and co-operation). As a result, a type of a communication ensues that is not free from paradoxes and one that makes a creation of a coherent and consistent message impossible, and therefore hinders a creation of a credible image of the party.

Polskie homilie Jana Pawła II – rekonesans badawczy
Zagórska, Katarzyna
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article presents an overview of the Polish subject literature on the language of the homilies and speeches delivered by John Paul II. The second part of the article includes a discussion on the author’s own research study on the subject that takes into account the Pope’s use of one, autosemantic part of speech, the verb. The source material for the analysis has been excerpted from the homilies delivered by John Paul II in Polish during the Pope’s eight pilgrimages to his homeland. It includes homiletic texts from the years 1979, 1983, 1987, 1991, 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2002, i.e. from within the time bracket of 24 years. In 67 homilies, the Pope uttered 110,036 lexemes, which as a result of the analysis produced 1,787 verbal lexical units. The number of verbal lexeme formations amounts to 14,900. On average, one unit includes 225.75 verbal lexeme formations, whereas the average percentage share of verbal lexeme formations in the material under scrutiny is 13.54%.
