Polskie realia w kolędach i pastorałkach XVII i XVIII wieku (na materiale tzw. Kantyczek karmelitańskich)
Borejszo, Maria
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The object of research for the author of the article has been the ancient realities recorded in the texts of carols from the 17th and 18th centuries. The material originates from an extensive manuscript collection of Christmas carols and songs, comprising 357 texts, owned by the cloister of Carmelite nuns in Cracow. This invaluable written monument of religious lyric poetry was published in print by Barbara Krzyżaniak in 1980. The image of the world presented in the Old-Polish carols reflects – in a careful and detailed manner – the realities of the Baroque and the Enlightenment periods, especially the realities of poor Polish rural areas, which the authors of Christmas carols must have known firsthand. Specific saturation of Christmas songs with lay motifs can be observed in the central and closing part of the studied collection.
In the lexicon found in Kantyczki karmelitańskie, which describes Old-Polish realities, two basic categories can be distinguished: one of them is composed of proper names (mainly the names and nicknames of shepherds and the names of nuns), the second – much more extensive and internally diversified – comprises the names of all kinds of objects that appear in the descriptions of shepherds’ preparations prior to their journey or merry-making at Christ’s crib. They are, for example, the information about the clothes worn by shepherds, farming implements and household objects, the means of transportation, foodstuffs, dishes, the animals reared or living free, the plants cultivated by people or growing naturally, musical instruments etc.

„A usta znów rozluźniają się do słów okaleczałych” – namopaniki Aleksandra Wata (recepcja, język, interpretacja)

Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The authors of the article, knowing about Wat’s interest in language mechanisms, focus their attention on namopaniki – the genre created by the poet. Arguing with the previous findings which concentrated on the presentation of the properties of semantics of the non-rational futuristic word, they propose an interpretation based on the demonstration of the inner energy of text.

O uwarunkowaniach procesu kształtowania się i stabilizacji rosyjskich nazwisk
Hrynkiewicz-Adamskich, Bożena
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The aim of this article is to point to the factors that started the process of family names formation in the Eastern Slavonic area. It also discusses extralinguistic reasons for fixing them as permanent surnames.
The official usage of surnames by the representants of different social groups in Russia proceeded as they were receiving full civic rights. It was also connected with the development of administrative structure of the Russian State.
The key factor conditioning the usage of family names by the representants of the future generations was the inheritance of grounds and other material goods within a family. It seems that two types of Russian surnames could evaluate spontaneously: 1. the family names of Russian aristocrats motivated by toponyms, and 2. the family names of craftsmen derived from names of professions and occuppations. The creation of the majority of Russian townspeople’s and peasants’ surnames was a concious and controlled process. However, it took into account the trends in forming patronymics and their tendency to become the family names.

Ogłoszenia sprzedaży odzieży damskiej a metody wpływania na odbiorcę
Karwowski, Stanisław
Uniwersytet Kazimierza Wielkiego w Bydgoszczy
The article is devoted to a linguistic analysis of sale advertisements for women’s clothing. The main purpose of the article is to identify the means used by the authors of advertisements for women’s clothing in order to encourage the customers to make purchase. The study concentrates on the linguistic and visual aspects of the discussed microtexts. Firstly, the conducted studies have showed that the authors of advertisements try to establish dialog with an addressee of their message by the use of question forms or imperative mode. Secondly, a macroact which is the advertisement of clothing, can be composed of at least nine microacts that are intended to encourage, praise, advise or promise. In order to achieve this, the advertisers use statements, abuse exclamations, emoticons, create messages that are informatively worthless. Thirdly, the authors of advertisements attach great attention to the aspect of credibility of the message, and because of that often direct attention to well-known persons, institutions or the terms of warranty. The conducted study has demonstrated that language is a basic and most important tool in constructing effective advertising messages.

Zróżnicowanie ekstensji tekstowej fonetycznych form obocznych w Księgach o gospodarstwie Piotra Krescentyna z 1549 roku
Osiewicz, Marek
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article is a continuation of studies concerning textual differences in distribution of variant phonetic forms. The analysis covers the forms being a part of four variances: jestli // jesli, -mdl- // -mgl-, miedzy // między and -mieszk- // -mięszk-. Different textual distribution of the studied forms proved to be significant – not only revealed the segmentation of text known from previous analysis (graphical and phonetic), but also 3 new, previously unknown text boundaries extending between the columns 510/511, 591/592 and 612/613. The strongest relationship with the job of a compositor is indicated by textual repartition of forms belonging to two variances: miedzy // między i jestli // jesli. With regard to the analysed forms the central part Cresc is most standardized, contained in the columns 138-384, whereas the most progressive (containing the greatest number of progressive variants) – is the section of text including the columns 381a–R10v. The completed study has also demonstrated that the boundary between the cluster Q and R established by Kazimierz Piekarski on the basis of a typographical analysis is also the boundary of occurrence of certain phonetic phenomena.

Czy Łużyce są nam bliskie? O nazwach z członami Łużyce, łużycki i Łużyczanin / Łużyczanka we współczesnej polszczyźnie
Żuraszek-Ryś, Iwona
Uniwersytet Zielonogórski
Lusatia is a phenomenon in the history of Europe. For many centuries its inhabitants bravely struggled against the German element, preserving their identity. Such conduct has earned them our admiration. Does this admiration find reflection in the Polish language, for instance in the proper names used today? This article makes an attempt at answering this question. Special attention has been paid to the onyms including the words Łużyce/Lusatia, łużycki/Lusatian, Łużyczanin/Łużyczanka/male or female inhabitant of Lusatia, excerpted from the Internet with the use of Google browser. Their analysis shows which factors also played an important role in the formation of such names, i.e., sympathy and interest in the inhabitants of Lusatia – the people who have been cultivating their culture, language and customs for many years and who, because of their conduct, are worthy of our reflection.

The use of personal names among Slovakia Hungarians
Bauko, Ján
Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra
This study deals the use of personal names among Slovakia Hungarians. The bilingual environment of Slovakia Hungarians affects their use of personal names. Bilingual persons can choose names from a larger set of names. Choosing a variant of a personal name from one language or the other can depend on several factors: the communicative domain, the communication partners, the social or linguistic context etc. The dimensions of time, space and society play an important role in the change anddiversity of personal names. A Hungarian dominant use of names characterizes Slovakia Hungarians in the informal domains, and Slovak dominant use in the formal domains. A dual use of names or bi-naming can characterize a dual identity, however, most people employ this as a pre-emptive strategy trying to avoid a possible language or communication problem by using the form conforming with the majority norm in a majority language context and the form conforming with the minority norm in a minority language or informal context. Personal names have an identity marking function, and can indicate the language affiliation and nationality of their bearer.

Uniwersytet Warmińsko-Mazurski w Olsztynie
The paper’s objective is to study the linguistic characteristics of a request, to indicate and describe the obligatory and facultative segments of a text as well as the constitutive elements of this act of speech adapted to specific conditions of network communication. The material has undergone philological analysis with the use of the tools of linguistic genology and textology. On the basis of individual examples, the most important components of this part of speech realized in virtual space have been defined – in the structural and pragmatic dimensions.

Z tygodnia na tydzień, z powieści na powieść, z meczu na mecz jako przykłady nieswobodnych grup syntaktycznych
Gębka-Wolak, Małgorzata
Uniwersytet Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu
Moroz, Andrzej
Uniwersytet Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu
The article has verified a hypothesis suggesting that the sequences mentioned in the title and similar to them are constrained syntactic groups, i.e., they do not form a regular combination of simple signs. The verification has been conducted on the basis of a three-stage procedure taking into account the semantic features and inner qualities of the studied expressions, namely, their composition as well as the structural and linear links between segments. It has been indicated that the components of the studied sequences jointly express meaning which can be considered as a form of perlocution: ‘something changes within fragments of time undergoing observation whose measure is determined by a variable component’. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the two components of a sequence that can be exchanged can be realized not only by standard measures of time (second, minute, hour, week), but also by nouns referring to events (match, meeting, term). Also, there is a presentation of the basic limitations in the realization of a variable component and a mutual linear arrangement of variable and constant components. A characteristic of the expressions of the type from week to week, from novel to novel, from match to match is supplemented by the remarks concerning their external syntax.

Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The text has been devoted to the analysis of the publications of the Movement of Alternative Society (Pol. Ruch Społeczeństwa Alternatywnego, RSA), a group gathering people with neo-anarchist views, originally jointly creating underground Solidarity movement, and later operating independently. The adopted research perspective—primarily pragmatic and stylistic—enabled scholars to distinguish and describe several features of the analysed magazines of the second circulation: the magazine Homek (at the beginning published as a biweekly, then as a monthly and finally published erratically) and ephemeral prints constituting an important tool of the Movement’s (RSA) operation.

Relacje modalne we współczesnych aktach normatywnych
Łapa, Romana
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The author examines the language of the law. She refers to the contemporary acts; the legal regulations are the subject of her description. The author analyses legal cases which have been interpreted on the basis of the regulations. She discusses a modal dimension of the relationships which create legal cases and also makes closer characteristics of the participants of actions who are connected with these relationships. Language exponents of individual relations are presented. In order to emphasise specific character of legal material, the author precedes each description by indicating the peculiarities of modal dependence which are visible in sentences containing the so-called basic modal units. These sentences stem from other than legal modern Polish texts.

Wtórna nosowość antycypacyjna w Księgach o gospodarstwie Piotra Krescentyna z 1549 roku
Osiewicz, Marek
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article is a continuation of research concerning textual differences of the distribution of variant graphic and phonetic forms in the first Polish-language edition of Księgi o gospodarstwie by Piotr Krescentyn (Helena Unglerowa, 1549). The analysis comprised the markings of the secondary anticipatory nasality. The article proposes a graphic interpretation of this phenomenon. Such interpretation results from the recognition as common a phenomenon of nasalization of labial vowels before nasal consonants. Different distribution of the studied forms in the text proved significant – it revealed not only the segmentation of text already known from previous analyses (graphic and phonetic – boundaries 429/430 and 485/486), but also three new, previously unknown text boundaries running between columns 477/478, 501/502 and 531/532. The convergence of the separated boundaries with a division of text into typesets was confirmed three times. This attests to a strong dependence of the discussed phenomenon on the type-setting factor. A comparative analysis demonstrated that as far as marking the secondary nasality is concerned, Księgi bear witness of the condition unknown in other prints from this period, which is closer to some 16th-century manuscripts, especially the letters of Stanisław Koszucki.

Dialektolodzy na manowcach. O wpływie niemczyzny na gwary Warmii i Mazur
Sobolewska, Katarzyna
Instytut Języka Polskiego Polskiej Akademii Nauk
The article contains a critical analysis of the opinions of dialectologists studying the dialects of Warmia and Masuria. In their view, firmly established since the 1960s, the influence of the German language on the regions’ dialects was insignificant and superficial. The article recalls and studies the sources used in the compilation of Słownik gwar Ostródzkiego, Warmii i Mazur, presents the linguistic material published therein. It poses a thesis that, although the language system of the studied dialect is Polish, the naming system comprising all fundamental spheres of life was shaped under a significant and versatile influence of German. Loanwords, semantic borrowings, replicas from the German language enter into numerous relationships of synonymy, hyponymy antonymy or hyperonymy with Polish words, creating complex and cohesive semantic fields within which the users of a dialect moved freely.

O rozwoju polskich dialektów
Wyderka, Bogusław
Uniwersytet Opolski
The article deals with a phenomenon of the evolution of dialects. With respect to traditional dialects, the new post-dialectal formations are characterized not so much by the systemic changes but rather by the functional and pragmatic ones; thus, in their defining, those phenomena should be considered. The first change that had occurred in the original phase of the creation of the Polish ethnical language, under the influence of the dominating variation (i.e., culturally supreme), was the change of the hierarchies of inflexion in the diasystem of the national language, from a horizontal organization (equivalent dialects) into hierarchical one (dominating literary language and functionally limited, socially influenced folk dialects). The fundamental alterations occurred as late as the second half of the 20th century. The first communication breakthrough took place after World War II as a result of migrations of people and civilizational transformations. This brought about changes that were called linguistic integration. There formed interdialects – nowadays, the forms dominating in Polish rural areas. The second communication breakthrough began in 1990s and was a result of changes of the systems of government, globalization and rapid civilizational advances. At that time, there occurred the development of dialects which went beyond their defined framework. In Polish linguistic area there form post-dialectal formations of regiolects of Kurpie, Podhale and Silesia, which systemically stem from dialects. Such phenomena can be termed as the emancipation of dialects. They are the expression of a modern regional identity being under construction.

Zapożyczenia greckie i łacińskie a polsko-rosyjskie kontakty językowe
Behrendt, Sonia
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article presents an analysis of 140 random lexemes of Greek and Latin origin excerpted from Słownik kieszonkowy polsko-rosyjski i rosyjsko-polski [Pocket Polish-Russian and Russian-Polish Dictionary] edited by I. Mitronova, G. Sinicyna and G. Lipkes. The corpus is, according to lexicographers and linguists, an effect of mutual influences of Polish and Russian languages. The opinions on origins of words differ among researchers, and the article attempts to verify the previously accepted judgements by M. Vasmer, W. Witkowski and Z. Rysiewicz, based on informations included in monographs by D. Moszyńska, H. Leeming, S. Kochman, and in historical dictionaries of both languages. With reference to almost 75% of the analysed material, the direction of loanword acquisition proposed by Vasmer, Witkowski and Rysiewicz has been confirmed. However, for about a quarter of the random sample of words, the accepted opinion is not confirmed by more recent historical dictionaries, nor by the lexical material provided in the monographs. The article proposes new results for the direction of loanword migration in this group of vocabulary.

Uniwersytet Łódzki
The article discusses urban place names in Łódź in three historical period when Poland was not independent: during the partitions, the First World War, and the Second World War. The analysis focused on ways of German and Russian intervention into urban place naming in Łódź. It describes naming techniques (translations of Polish names, adaptations to foreign phonetic and writing systems, renaming) and the goals of foreign intervention into Polish place naming. The conclusion is that Russian and German interventions during the partitions and the first world war were mainly aimed at cultural assimilation, and consisted in use of Russified and Germanized forms. During the Second World War, on the other hand, Germans were consistently instilling elements of Nazi-German culture and history in place names.

Gwarowe nazwy ubiorów w „Słowniku warszawskim”
Borejszo, Maria
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article discusses slang lexis related to garment names, documented in Słownik języka polskiego [Dictionary of Polish Language] by Jan Karłowicz, Adam Kryński, and Władysław Niedźwiedzki (vols. I–VIII, Warszawa 1900–1927). Many of the words are unknown to literary Polish of the first decades of the 20th century, and some differ in their pronunciation, structure, or meaning from garment dictionary used in standard Polish. As the research suggests, the slang material documented in the dictionary is not only rich, but also varied in terms of form and meaning. Characteristically, many words are unstable. Słownik warszawski contains particularly many words for outer garments. Unfortunately, the editing layout of entries in the dictionary makes it impossible to localize the origin of each garment name, and consequently to link it to a particular slang. The explanations of words in the dictionary are usually very short, which often not enough to reconstruct the look and purpose of a garment.

Standaryzacja tekstowa inwentarzy wiejskich z XVII wieku
Kość, Józef
Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie
Textual Standardization of Rural Inventories in 17th Century occurred in the process of official language communication during the inspection of royal land manors, which was conducted between 16th and 18th centuries. The repetitiveness and stability of structure of this process of language communication, and the official conceptualization of inventoried stock, as well as the inspectors’ intention to be communicative, shaped the 17th-century standard inventory, which consisted of stable textual components, i.e. official terminology, parallel syntactic structures, initializing and finishing formulae, and composition of text, which conformed to the universal accounting formula used for tax purposes: revenue – cost = income under taxation. The constitutive unit of this structure, which for practical purposes reduced description of listed objects, is a categorizing inventory including groups of people, properties, objects, and sources of income in money and in kind. The 17th-century rural inventory, as a textual pattern embedded in the language consciousness of state officials and reinforced legally by treasury instructions, cumulates the uniform and repetitive forms of official language, and approaches the modern form of inventory, which prefers tabular and form-based approaches.

„Dobra Czytanka wg św. ziom’a Janka” a tradycja polskiego stylu biblijnego
Lisowski, Tomasz
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
Wiatrowski, Przemysław
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The topic of the article are selected aspects of the language of Dobra Czytanka wg św. ziom’a Janka, which is a stylized hip-hop slang version of the Gospel According to St. John. The article presents a selection of lexical and phraseological devices that depart from the traditional canon of Polish Biblical style. The features include various modifications in Biblical onomastics, forms of address, and in phraseology and fixed Biblical phrases. Such transformations lead to a specific desacralization of Biblical content. However, the desacralization occurs only as opposed to the texts that perpetuate the traditional Polish Biblical style, which is characterized by hieratic quality and ritualization. The authors of Czytanka make the Biblical content clear and comprehensible for representatives of hip-hop subculture, following the principle of dynamic translation of Biblical text.

Niezwykłe losy pierwszego drukowanego przekładu Koranu na język polski
Łapicz, Czesław
Uniwersytet Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu
The first translation of the Quran, printed and published in 1858, was signed by Jan Musza Tarak Buczacki, a Tatar and Muslim from Podlasie in Poland. Today, however, is is known that the actual translators were two Philomats from Wilno, the priest Dionizy Chlewiński and Ignacy Domeyko. They performed the task in the 1820s for the Muslim Tatars of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, who over generations had lost their knowledge not only of liturgic language (Arab), but also of their ethnic languages and dialects (Turkic). In this way, Lithuanian-Polish Muslims cut themselves off from the roots and sources of Islam. However, the attempts made by the translators to gain acceptance of Russian censors to publish the Polish rendition of the holy book of Islam were not successful. Only in the 1850s the acceptance was granted, after efforts made by Jan Murza Tarak Buczacki, whose name was put on the title page posthumously by the publisher. At the end of the 19th century an anonymous author, probably a Tatar and Muslim, converted the printed translation, authored by Buczacki, into a traditionalhand-written Tatar tefsir: the Polish version was overwritten by hand in the interlines, and synchronized with the Arab lines of the original Quran in Arabic. For dogmatic and religious reason, he transliterated the text form Latin alphabet into Arabic one, without changing the content of the translation. The manuscript is now kept in Museum of History of Religion in Grodno. This is the conclusion of the complicated history of the first Polish translation of the Holy Book of Islam.

Badania nad językiem religijnym w Polsce w latach 1988–2013. Osiągnięcia – perspektywy badawcze
Mikołajczak, Stanisław
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu

Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
Polish linguistic research into religious language has been developing dynamically after 1988. From the beginning, they have been conducted in a wide context, and although the process of their integration is limited, it has been consistently advancing. The research in religious language in the last fifteen years have concentrated in two tightly cooperating research centres: Kraków and Poznań. Religious language, as discussed in studies published there, is widely understood as a variety of standard language used in all situations related to the sacrum. The results of research initiated and conducted by the Zespół Języka Religijnego [Religious Language Group] and the proceedings of conferences organized by the Department of the Grammar of Contemporary Polish Language of the Institute of Polish Philology at the Adam Mickiewicz University, are published in a Teolingwistika series, and in continuing volumes of Język religijny dawniej i dziś [Religious Language Now and in History]. Researchers in religious language set many tasks for themselves. They search for reasons for the contemporary crisis of religious language in Poland. They are also faced with the fact that there is no dictionary of religious language, and no synthetic study that would describe religious language in a historical perspective. Researchers also want to investigate the language of young religious persons, and of new evangelism, and the influence of contemporary media on the ongoing changes in religious communication. It is particularly important that the research is not limited to the religious language used in Catholic Church in Poland.

O regionalności siedemnastowiecznych kazań pogrzebowych. Część 1: druki lubelskie
Pihan-Kijasowa, Alicja
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
In the 17th century, funeral sermons were a frequent type of public address. Over six hundred of such sermons were published in Poland at the time. They were published by presses all around Poland, so that each region is represented in the production. Consequently, funeral sermons are a good source for research in regional varieties of Polish in the 17th century. The article presents the problem on the example of printed material from Lublin, published in the press owned by Paweł Konrad, Anna Konradowa, and Jan Wieczorkowicz. The inspection of the texts has shown that they represent typical qualities of 17th-century standard Polish, as well as regional differential and frequency-based qualities. Because sermons were written not only by authors from Małopolska, it can be assumed that their language was largely influenced by editors and printers.

The article, which analyses material acquired through poll collection, focuses on the awareness of inhabitants of Poznań (aged 35 to 85) of colloquial urban onymes, and is related to an earlier text by the authors, which presented results of the same poll among students of the Faculty of Polish. It turned out that commonly known and used names constitute almost half of the onymes listed in the poll (Akumulatory, Bema, Botanik, Ceglorz, Chwiałka, Dąbrówka, Deptak, Krzyże, Kupiec, Marcin, Marcinek, Okrąglak, Paderek, Pigalak, Raczyńscy, Raszeja, Struś, Szamarzewo, Teatralka). The stability of urban onymy in the language of inhabitants of Poznań is confirmed by phenomena such as: 1) transfer of names on new urban objects (Adaś, Akwarium, Ceglorz, Gargamel, Kanty, Krzyże, Młyn, Paderek, Szamarzewo, Teatralka); 2) extension of referentiality of names because of changes in extralinguistic reality (Chwiałka, Dąbrówka, Marcinek); or 3) creation of new urban onymes (Bulaj, Cyryl, Biblia), including derivates (Bema – Bemowo, Chwiałka – Chwiała).

Świerk, drzewo proste
Szcześniak, Krystyna
Uniwersytet Gdański
The article discusses the place of the spruce in Slavic and Baltic customs, folk medicine, chants, and superstitions. The research has demonstrated that the tree has many meanings in Slavic culture (it is treated there as a female tree, which is suggested by its name in East Slavic languages), and although it seems to be straight and simple (because it is the way it grows) it has turned out to be a liminal tree of borderlands, connecting life with death, and allowing for a reconciliation with inevitability of passing, facilitating the passage of a dead person’s soul to the other dimension of eternal life. The spruce combines the joy of wedding (because it is included in the wedding tree) with the threat of infertility (if it is planted too close to home). Additionally, it protects cattle from witches and evil spirits (for the first pasture outing, cattle was driven with a spruce twig, or a tree was laid before the building from which the animals were driven out). Its blades, twigs, and cones were widely used as designates in folk medicine chants, and for infusions, extracts, and ointments used externally and internally as medicines.

Znaczenie słowa i zasada wewnętrznej motywacji cech semantycznych
Tokarski, Ryszard
Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie
The meaning of a word has a layered structure with the clearly distinguished center (prototype, lexical meaning) and – the further towards the peripheries – with semantic connotations more and more weak-established in the system. Giving-up ofthe purely structuralist understanding of connotations (verified by semantic and morphological derivatives, collocations, repeatable lexical oppositions, or various tests) has created a danger that semantically irrelevant components may be recognized as relevant qualities. The article proposes a rule for verification of weak connotations. Underlying the principle of internal motivation of qualities is the conviction that the meaning of a word is internally structured, while each quality, especially weak connotations, are motivated by the overall structure of meaning and are explained in the context of this structure.

Współczesnej publicystyki prasowej oblicza różne
Wojtak, Maria
Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie
The analyses presented in the article suggest that contemporary column writing can be divided into the basic mainstream and modernizing sub-currents. The mainstream is flexibly inscribed into the tradition of press publishing, and characterized by recentness of problems discussed (although historical ones are not avoided), importance of themes, defense of values accepted as primary in our cultural area, and convincing persuasion, based on argument and logical support for opinions, reference to authority, inative and suggestive quality. Modernizing sub-currents, on the other hand, should be perceived as experimental activity, authored subjectively, polyphonic, exposing and satirical, provocative and appealing to readers in the consctruction of a common world view, based on common interests, and community of ethical principles, language, and laughter (interestingly, these parameters do not have to co-occur). The phenomenon of mixing all currents in a text seems to be the most typical quality of contemporary column writing. The functioning of media content with a given dominant introduces a modernizing stir into this order. The article presents a more careful analysis of several examples of these tendencies.

Based on a dictionary of contemporary Polish surnames, the article collects surnames that are identical as bird names, and includes the number of persons who bear such names. The number is surprisingly high (642 277 persons). The article demonstrates, through examples, how various qualities of birds motivate the metaphorical use of bird names as nicknames, and subsequently as surnames.

Kolory Afryki w powieści Henryka Sienkiewicza W pustyni i w puszczy. Część I: świat przyrody
Borejszo, Maria
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The object of studies presented in the article are the designations of colours documented in the novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz entitled In Desert and Wilderness. Against all appearances, it is not the issue treated only marginally by the writer, which may be a little surprising if we take into account the character of the book (an adventure novel for youth, focused basically on the lively, attracting attention plot and not on extensive author’s narration). The author of the article distinguishes more than a dozen of groups of realities especially often characterised from the point of view of their colours.
Primarily, these are the descriptions concerning the world of African flora and fauna – exotic for the Polish reader. As it results from the conducted studies, the attention of Sienkiewicz is mainly drawn to the colours of animals, especially birds. It is likely that the writer’s predilection for hunting played here a decisive role. African flora is basically presented in the form of colourful spots against the background of greenery, and not by detailed descriptions of the appearance of individual representatives of a given species.
Additionally, the writer’s interest is aroused by changes of colours of the sky and the whole surrounding world depending on the time of day, atmospheric conditions, light intensity (mainly sunrises and sunsets).

The article makes an attempt to verify the theses concerning the kind of dependence of the Old-Polish Psalms and Psalters from the Czech Psalters. By juxtaposing the Latin texts of Psalms and the Old-Polish and Czech translations (here mainly Psalm 50 from the so-called Page of Medyka and St. Florian’s Psalter), the authors demonstrate that – firstly – the voices from the Page of Medyka are not (as contended by Stanisław Rospond) an evidence of “fine tuning” of the text of Psalm 50 from Kmed to the translation of this Psalm from the remaining Old-Polish Psalters, and they may have been a result of contact of the glossator with the Czech text (in the written or verbalized form); secondly – that the similarities of the Polish and Czech Psalters are not necessarily the result of the difficulties connected with translation into Polish or lack of translator’s professional skills. The conducted analyses justify the thesis that the translator of, for example, St. Florian’s Psalter rather made use of individual words or constructions present in Czech Psalters as successive versions of expressing the same contents; what is more, in some cases the similarities prove to be only apparent.

Zwięzła historia języka polskiego – założenia opisu
Dunaj, Bogusław
Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Zawodowa w Tarnowie
The article begins with the presentation of the previous syntheses of the history of the Polish language. Next, the foundations of the description have been presented. According to the author they should comprise, among others, the processes of linguistic differentiation, occurring at the level of the: a) system, b) style as well as the process of linguistic integration leading to the creation of a general language. In the historical and linguistic description, the author distinguished 3 levels: a) political, social and cultural background, b) communicative aspects, c) linguistic aspects. While discussing the problem of linguistic communication, the author draws readers’ attention to three communicative breakthroughs in the history of the Polish language: a) in the first half of the 16th c., b) after World War II, c) at the turn of the 20th century. The article is concluded with a proposal of periodization of the history of the Polish language. The author has divided the history of the Polish language—comprising more than ten centuries—into two great epochs: a) until the beginning of the 16th century, b) from the 16th century until the modern times. They have been divided into subperiods on the basis of varied criteria: historical, linguistic and communicative.

Koncepcja idealnego terminu w świetle Słownika terminologii lekarskiej polskiej z 1881 roku
Jankowiak, Lucyna Agnieszka
Instytut Slawistyki Polskiej Akademii Nauk
The paper demonstrates attributes of an ideal term on the grounds of nineteenth century Polish medical terminology (names of disorders) from a Dictionary of Polish Medical Terminology by S. Janikowski, J. Oettinger and A. Kremer (Kraków 1881). In the first part of this dictionary, approximately 20 thousand foreign language entries are gathered (Latin, German, French, English) together with their Polish equivalents – from one to several records. The sequence of Polish terms assigned to the entries is not random: from the most to the less recommended. It means that the best terms (I call them ideal terms) come first in the synonymic line. And they are (totally 940) the subject of analysis in this paper. It results from the analysis that ideal terms are mostly: 1) native (98.4%); 2) of simple structure (comprising two elements at most – 89.3%); 3) syntactical derivatives (55.1%); 4) of non-specified origin; 5) sometimes having many meanings (12.2%); 6) relatively long-lasting, that means they generally last in the scientific terminology (74.9%) and - a little bit more rarely (more than 58%) – they keep their position of the ideal term; 7) compared to other terms in a synonymic line, in terms of the structure - frequently (65.5%) identical, that is comprising the same number of elements; 8) most frequently (41.7%) of common root – compared to other terms (all of them or just some of them) in a synonymic line.

Tekst pozwu sądowego w polskiej kodyfikacji prawa magdeburskiego z XVI wieku
Kość, Józef
Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie
In Porządek sądów i spraw miejskich prawa majdeburskiego w Koronie Polskiej published in Cracow in 1559 Bartłomiej Groicki had codified with respect to law regulations the text of a court summons. This codification also comprised the linguistic layer of the summons. The model of a summons text had been its oral and written text realizations in the court practice both in Polish and in Latin, which were previously known from mediaeval Polish, and also legal regulations included in professional legal literature written in Latin.
Numerous reprints of Porządek sądów…, used through centuries in the court practice in Poland, contributed to the popularization and preservation of a summons in linguistic awareness of court officials and participants of court trials as a standard official utterance

Historyk języka w edytorstwie naukowym
Kozaryn, Dorota
Uniwersytet Szczeciński
The paper deals with the way of constructing linguistic commentaries to the Middle Polish texts being published by Prof. Wojciech Ryszard Rzepka together with Wiesław Wydra, Maria Adamczyk or Alojzy Sajkowski. The observations carried out show that semantic explanations— being the main framework of linguistic commentaries made by Prof. Rzepka—become a specific excuse to show and describe grammatical forms, make a classification of language forms on the grounds of their regional, terminological and systemic affinity, highlight the form’s antiquity, and, consequently, to show the development of language throughout history. The use of linguistic terminology in the commentaries, on the one hand, and the citation of linguistic references in explanations which refer to specific issues, on the other hand, show confidence of Prof. Rzepka that the concerned recipients of edited texts have possessed the basic philological knowledge but also the desire and the need to expand it. Presenting the lexical background in a commentary, apart from highlighting the variation of language over time, allows one also to see how an editor works—reaching out to various sources in search of the best interpretative hypothesis, as well as vast knowledge acquired which the author of explanations willingly shares with readers. Accuracy and details of the performed reasoning do not undermine the use of modal denotations—maybe, supposedly, probably—in some explanations. Sharing doubts with recipients is rather an expression of Prof. Rzepka’s incredible modesty, who, himself being a paragon, also sets the bar very high for language historians in the field of scientific editorship who would like to follow in His footsteps.

Problem leksykalnej relacji filiacyjnej między biblijnymi przekładami renesansowymi. Casus Nowego Testamentu Biblii Jakuba Wujka (1599) i Nowego Testamentu Biblii brzeskiej (1563)
Lisowski, Tomasz
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The purpose of the analysis is to try to provide an answer to the question whether it is possible to determine the degree of filiational dependence of the New Testament of the Bible translated by Jakub Wujek from 1599 (abbreviation: W) from the New Testament of the Brześć Bible from 1563 (abbreviation: B) with regard to lexis. The study is accompanied by the assumption that the translation of the Brześć Bible may have partially inspired Jakub Wujek in his translation work.
The data which enabled scholars to establish the scope of a possible filiational relation between the New Testament of the Bible by Wujek and the New Testament of the Brześć Bible with reference to lexis have been obtained owing to a quantitative-distributional analysis of both texts. Moreover, a comparative context has been considered, that is that between the New Testament of Gdańsk (1606) and the New Testament of the Gdańsk Bible (1632) as texts remaining in closer filiational relation with B, forming a Calvinist-Lutheran translational continuum with this translation.
During the study, the number of identical lexical substitutions in place of parallel lexemes common for B and W were treated as an exponent of the degree of hypothetical lexical dependence of W from B. In the subsequent translations of the comparative context under consideration (W and B) they were replaced by alternative equivalents.
The result of the analysis with the criteria thus defined is the contention that lexical dependence of W from B is hardly noticeable, which can be proved by the following numerical data: W contains 65 lexemes in total which evidence the studied dependence (they belong to the vocabulary with a frequency f = 1, exceptionally f = 2 or f = 3). They constitute barely 1.2% of the entire lexicon of W, and their total number of occurrences in the text amounts to 74, which is only 0.06% of the entire text of W.

Uwagi o przebiegu XVI-wiecznych procesów normalizacyjnych na przykładzie oboczności albo // abo
Michalska-Górecka, Paulina
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The aim of the article is to demonstrate the rivalries stemming from the Old-Polish variant forms/ albo and abo in the 16th-century printed material from Cracow, having the strongest influence upon the forming literary Polish language. The article tries to answer the question how a certain linguistic custom was established, not being a norm yet. For comparison, the process has also been shown in the prints from the northern borderland of Poland and Great Poland, the regions which at that time did not have such a significant influence on the literary language as the prints from Cracow, but also produced more books than other regions. The listing of data from three regions makes it possible to show the differences in the formation of the norm between the centre of cultural life of the Republic of Poland (Cracow) and its peripheral regions – the eastern and the western.

Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article presents Poznań school of historical linguistics. The founder of the school is Władysław Kuraszkiewicz. The schools’ central idea is a scholarly attitude which is based on respect for material, philological akribeia (accuracy) and caution in drawing conclusions. The representatives of this school are characterised by aspiration for measurability of research results and understanding of the role of statistics. Research is conducted on the carefully selected, very extensive material taking into account numerous variable features: chronological, geographic, generic, stylistic or formal. Among the scholars who must be included in this school are the disciples of Professor Kuraszkiewicz: Zdzisława Krążyńska, Tadeusz Lewaszkiewicz, Leszek Moszyński, Wojciech Ryszard Rzepka, Tadeusz Skulina, Bogdan Walczak and Tadeusz Zdancewicz. Nowadays, their disciples form another generation of scholars connected with Poznań school of historical linguistics.

Dawne słowniczki gwarowe jako źródło do historii języka
Nowowiejski, Bogusław
Uniwersytet w Białymstoku
Monolingual dictionaries of Polish as well as the old translation dictionaries which until the 19th century also fulfilled the function (in compliance with the intention of their authors) of general Polish dictionaries are traditionally regarded as fundamental sources of the history of the Polish language, especially its development and lexical resources. The collections of folk vocabulary which—more or less professionally—were narrowly used in the papers concerning the past periods of the Polish language aroused poor interest on the part of the historians of language. The article contends that small dialectal dictionaries should be treated equally with other sources of the history of the Polish language, especially lexicographical ones, for they provide a very interesting material for analysis and interpretation, not only linguistic.

The article presents evidence of the use of variant forms albo // abo for typesetting purposes. To demonstrate this, the illustration material was used originating from five 16th-century prints in verse in which the form abo or albo appears only in long verses, brought to the right margin – which proves that the form was utilized because of its graphical and not linguistic features.

O regionalności XVII-wiecznych kazań pogrzebowych. Część II: druki poznańskie
Pihan-Kijasowa, Alicja
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu

Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
In the 17th century funeral sermons were one of the most frequent forms of public utterances. More than 600 funeral sermons were published in Poland at that time. They were issued by publishing houses scattered all over Poland, and thus each region had its representation in this output. Consequently, funeral sermons are a good source for studies into regional differences in the Polish language of the 17th century. The article deals with this problem on the example of Great Polish prints issued in 17th-century Poznań publishing houses of: the Wolrabs, Wojciech Regulus, Wojciech Młodujewicz, Wojciech Laktański, Jan Rossowski, the Printing Office of Lubrański Academy and the Printing Office of SocietatisIesu. The analysis of texts revealed that they manifest the most typical features of the general Polish of that time, but simultaneously the regional features, differential in character (as for example the inflectional suffix -ej of feminine hard-stem nouns: type głowej), as well as frequentative (as for example the exchange of i and y for e before consonants l, ł: type zrobieł). And although the discussed texts were written not only by the authors originating from Great Poland, they are characterized by common linguistic features. Thus, it must be admitted that the employees of printing firms – the editors, proof-readers, typesetters – played a significant role in the final linguistic creation of the 17th-century printed text.

Znaczenie badań historycznojęzykowych dla interpretacji zjawisk współczesnej polszczyzny
Siuciak, Mirosława
Uniwersytet Śląski
The article contributes to the discussion on the interpretation of processes taking place in the contemporary Polish language from two perspectives: diachronic and synchronic (ahistorical, to be precise). The author draws attention to the problem of not accounting for the achievements of diachronic linguistics, which is visible in the studies devoted to the analysis of the language used by the contemporary Poles. This leads to a situation in which the same research questions are not infrequently examined and interpreted in completely different ways in synchronic studies and those dealing with the history of language. Sometimes the differences are so vast that coherent scientific discourse becomes disabled.
Enriching the investigation of the processes occurring in the contemporary Polish language with conclusions drawn from analysing historical sources is thus an important claim. Considering the diachronic perspective could be particularly beneficial for discussing the issue of the norm. Since a number of problems with language correctness result from tendencies and processes which have been happening in language for centuries, only becoming acutely aware of them can bring a change in understanding codification and the linguistic norm.

Etymologiczne zabawy Juliana Tuwima
Sokólska, Urszula

The article concentrates on the etymological and quasi-etymological considerations of Julian Tuwim, his fascination with Slavism and the future of language and word-formative experiments. Of course, there is no mention here about a program manifesto forming a logically ordered lecture in an academic sense. The linguistic knowledge of the poet “can be recognized” in his opinions appearing in Pegazie dęba or in funny poetical puns and metalinguistic utterances.
It must be emphasized that in the writer’s opinion, language is not only a substance used for creation of the literary vision of the world. The artist makes efforts to comprehend the secrets of a language system and even draws conclusions of theoretical nature, turning language into a kind of a “protagonist” of his own poetic texts, journalistic texts or texts on the theory of literature.

Teksty naukowe i techniczne doby średniopolskiej jako źródło badań historycznojęzykowych
Szczaus, Agnieszka
Uniwersytet Szczeciński
In the Middle-Polish period numerous texts on science and technology were written. Linguists used to pay little attention to those writings – researchers analysed the terminology and noted the morphological manifestations of the scholarly style as well as the manifestations of consistency of historical scientific texts. The issues such as the emergence of the principles of drafting ancillary texts (footnotes, references, bibliography lists); the early development of the scientific press publications (popular-scientific press) in the Polish language and the emergence of new genres of text assisting the scientific aspects of life were of little interest to linguists. Moreover, a large body of historical scientific and technical texts remained entirely unknown to a vast number of readers as the overwhelming majority of those publications have never been republished. In recent years, thanks to–among others–quickly progressing digitisation, it is increasingly easier to access the old scientific and technical texts. Consequently, more and more attention is paid to them by researchers who emphasize that the development of the Polish language was influenced not only by the transformations of the artistic language but also by other stylistic varieties of Polish, including the scholarly style.

Wojciech Ryszard Rzepka na tle poznańskiej tradycji językoznawstwa historycznego
Walczak, Bogdan
Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Zawodowa im. Jakuba z Paradyża w Gorzowie Wielkopolskim
The article is an attempt to establish the position of the scholarly achievements of Wojciech Ryszard Rzepka (almost exclusively in the field of the history of the Polish language) on the background of the scholarly activity of his predecessors. The author adopted the output of his teacher and scholarly master, Władysław Kuraszkiewicz, as the most important reference point. The author has examined more closely three currents in the research activity of Wojciech Rzepka: his lexical studies, his editorial and lexicographical output. Concluding the article, the author considered Rzepka most prominent historian of the Polish language in his generation – a researcher whose scholarly achievements are marked by originality and novelty as well as a harmonious combination of the dominating empiricism and understanding for the theory and methodology of historical linguistics.

The article describes—at the level of text—the lexical and semantic determinants of behaviours, attributes, states and conditions as well as the characteristics of the protagonist of the poem. The world presented in the poem was used by the article’s author to depict the symbolic and cultural qualities with which the poet endowed his literary skylark. The analysis of the linguistic layer shows rich metaphorization of the text, varied character of the artistic imaging means composed into the form of a classicistic praise song in honour of the skylark.

Nazwy kolorów w leksyce odzieżowej (na materiale Słownika ubiorów Ireny Turnau)
Borejszo, Maria
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The Dictionary of Clothing by Irena Turnau records 113 lexemes defining the colours of clothes and fabrics used in the Polish language from the 14th century until the beginning of the 19th century. The material collected by the author of the Dictionary originates from the sources that are seldom taken into account by lexicographers, that is from inventories, last wills, bills, the data recorded by guilds and merchandise official prices, and because of this a large group of words was not documented in the dictionaries of historical Polish and monographs devoted to the names of colours (in the index placed at the end of the article, such words have been highlighted with bold type).
In the analysed material, a quite numerous group of loan words (mainly from French and Italian) is represented, used in Polish only periodically, but also the vernacular formations, most often found with the suffix -owy, derived from the word-forming bases being the names of flora, fauna and cookery, precious and semiprecious stones, minerals, metals, atmospheric phenomena etc.
The names of various shades of red colour, then yellow, blue and green dominate among the lexical items describing the colours of clothes and fabrics. The remaining palette of colours is represented by fewer examples. We can include here such names of colours as: grey-brown, brown, violet and white.
The descriptions of the colours of clothes and fabrics contained in the Dictionary of Clothes by Irena Turnau, do not fully represent a whole richness of lexicon of the studied semantic field. It is also difficult to answer unambiguously the question about the reasons which decided about this specific selection of material, because, next to the names which were not documented previously, there appears here also the generally known vocabulary which has been in use in the Polish language until today. Also, the author does not separate the lexicon used all over Poland from dialectal names.

Rodzina i rodzaj – biologiczne jednostki taksonomiczne w Słowniku języka polskiego pod redakcją Mieczysława Szymczaka
Chodera, Janina
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article opens with the presentation of the principles of formulation of Latin names of families and genera in the systematics of Carolus Linnaeus as well as the presentation of the presumptions adopted in the Polish terminology with reference to word-formation of the discussed taxonomical units (categories). Next, a detailed analysis has been presented of the structure of definitions referring to the designation family in the Dictionary of the Polish Language edited by Mieczysław Szymczak. Additionally, a peculiar approach of linguists to genus, as a taxonomical unit, has been presented, resulting from lack of understanding of its place and position in the systematics. Finally, proposals were presented of the principles of elaboration of the definitions of family and genus in the descriptive dictionary of Polish.

Mało znane źródło germanizmów: wileński Słownik błędów językowych Juliana Szweda
Cieszkowski, Marek
Uniwersytet Kazimierza Wielkiego w Bydgoszczy
Mędelska, Jolanta
Uniwersytet Kazimierza Wielkiego w Bydgoszczy
The dictionary mentioned in the title was compiled in the interwar period (1918- -1939) and was then quite well known. Today, very few people remember about it. In the opinion of the authors of the article, it is worthwhile to remind about this book, especially to the scholars studying foreign influences upon the Polish language, including— which may seem surprising—the linguists investigating the influence of the German language upon the Polish language. In his guide, J. Szwed used not only the linguistic material collected in the Vilnius province, he had strong personal ties with, but also originating from Little Poland and Cieszyn Silesia.
As it has been shown in the analysis, there were more than 180 lexical Germanisms in the small dictionary from Vilnius, i.e., definitely more than in the other publications of this type issued in the first half of the 20th century. This material is dominated by loan words, quite well known in the Polish language (130 items), recorded in 1-2 definition dictionaries, e.g., cug “train”, fojt “voivode”. However, we also find the Germanisms that are evidenced only in the small dictionary by J. Szwed, for instance bruch “hernia”.
In the publication of the Vilnius teacher we can also find phonetic Germanisms (e.g., voiced s after sonorous consonants in foreign words, comp.: intenzywny, konzul), inflectional (e.g., changes of grammatical gender) and syntactical (e.g., mam pieniądze na banku [I have got money on the bank], instead of: w banku [in the bank]).

Z historii wymowy wyrazu hala ‘pastwisko górskie’
Cybulski, Marek
Uniwersytet Łódzki
Polish word hala “mountain pasture” is generally derived from the Slovak hol’a, and this borrowing, combined with the introduction of pseudo-correct a, was supposed to be credited to Romantic literature, and precisely was the result of etymological experiments of Seweryn Goszczyński. The present paper demonstrates that the word hala, written exclusively with a and often with ll, is a quite frequent phenomenon in the texts of Księga państwa żywieckiego (“The Book of the Żywiec State”) from the year 1681. The pronunciation hala instead of hola may have been used at that time by literate inhabitants of the Beskidy Mountains, familiar with the standard of the literary language, although rather poorly, thus inclined to adjust to the tendency of hypercorrectness. The German typographic influence cannot be excluded.

O niektórych animizacjach i personifikacjach w twórczości Stefana Żeromskiego
Handke, Kwiryna
Instytut Slawistyki PAN w Warszawie
Stefan Żeromski was a writer and a person with very strong ties with nature. He was especially close to the world of fauna and flora, which he knew and observed well. Żeromski largely introduced this outside world into his writings. In his representations, the author made use of different linguistic and stylistic means such as: names and designations, appositional conjunctions, periphrases, hyperboles and other, and primarily metaphors and comparisons including animization and personification.
Żeromski made use of animization as a form of an extended metaphor or a comparison, mainly with reference to floral objects, to which he attributed various human characteristics— the appearance and actions, human behaviours and sensual feelings, and even the means of communication with the environment.
In the texts of Żeromski, personification—as a more complete form of animization— includes plants, and, from the animal realm, mainly birds, often assuming the form of short stories.
The questions presented in the article have been illustrated with extended quotations from the diaries of the writer as well as from various fabular writings of his authorship.

On the basis of 32 volumes of the Dictionary of Polish Language of the 16th Century, the author claims that 41 entries were included in Jan Mączyński’s dictionary, which definitely constitutes half of these influences.

Stylizacja języka bohaterek powieści Joanny Chmielewskiej na polszczyznę potoczną
Kaptur, Ewa
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The aim of the article is to analyse the language of women protagonists of the selected prose writings by Joanna Chmielewska stylized into colloquial Polish. Several conclusions stem from reading her novels.
First, stylization of the language of women protagonists into colloquial Polish appears in the narrative layer and in dialogues.
Second, Joanna Chmielewska in her novels faithfully mirrors the colloquial variety of Polish, additionally enriching it with linguistic innovations of various type. Emotional tone prevails in the utterances of women, being especially manifest in the use of numerous exclamations, onomatopoeic words, calls or the words generally considered as vulgar or offensive. This also refers to diminutive expressions and the affectionate terms used in the function of words as well as pejorative expressions.
The women protagonists of the novels speak the language rich in idioms and proverbs. They appear in an unchanged form but even more often are subjected to diverse linguistic experiments. The reader’s attention is attracted to numerous contaminations and supplementary innovations.
It should be noted that colloquialism in Chmielewska’s writing is primarily manifested at the linguistic level; to a much lesser degree in the selection of topics. In the studied texts there are no typical everyday themes connected with a stereotypically understood role of a woman.

Konwencje tekstu testamentowego w średniowiecznych relacjach sądowych
Kość, Józef
Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie
Mediaeval reports of last will and testament records included in Ortyle magdeburskie (German Urteils) enable us to reconstruct the text paradigm of the last will and testament as early as in the 15th-century Polish.
The register of elementary and facultative components of mediaeval texts of last will and testament is very similar to the formulation of lay and ecclesiastical testaments from later periods. The basic structure of the text of testaments remains virtually unchanged, which already in the 16th century had a stable semantic formula that could be summarized in words: who transfers the inheritance to whom in the face of unavoidable death. Consequently, the Middle and Modern Polish language acts of the last will have their structural and stylistic foundations in the Old Polish period when the conventions typical of the paradigm of the testament documents became established in the Polish language.

Słownictwo rzadkie w polszczyźnie Jana Kochanowskiego
Kucała, Marian
Instytut Języka Polskiego PAN w Krakowie
If we compare The Dictionary of Jan Kochanowski with the Dictionary of Polish Language of the 16th Century it becomes obvious that Jan Kochanowski rarely used religious vocabulary (with the exception of the word God), as well as numerals, words with particles, e.g. chociaż (“although”) appearing in the Dictionary of Polish Language of the 16th Century as many as 1061 times. Similar situation applies to other words. Kochanowski rarely used neologisms and introduced hapax legomena into his texts mainly for the reasons of poetics.

Leksyka Nowego Testamentu Biblii brzeskiej (1563) oraz Biblii Jakuba Wujka (1599) wobec zasobu leksykalnego Słownika polszczyzny XVI wieku
Lisowski, Tomasz
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The analysis presented in the paper consists in juxtaposition of the listing of the entries from the New Testament of Brześć Bible (1563) and the New Testament of the Bible of Jakub Wujek (1599), two sixteen-century translations of the Bible, distinguished by their great social influence, with the index of the entries of hitherto published volumes of the Dictionary of the Polish Language of the 16th Century, the wordbook which presents the condition of the vocabulary of the sixteen-century Polish. The two biblical translations provided 14 lexemes unrecorded as entries in the Dictionary.
Firstly, there are morphological variants among them of the entries of the Dictionary – 4 lexemes, (e.g., huf); secondly, derivatives from the entries of the Dictionary – 3 lexemes (e.g., potaić się); thirdly, the lexemes being grammatical forms stemming from the entries in the Dictionary – 5 lexemes (e.g., gardzony), the meaning of some of them departs from the meaning of their basic grammatical form; fourthly, the lexemes which are not morphological variants of the entries of the Dictionary – 2 lexemes of foreign origin (e.g., afryk).
All of the mentioned lexemes are marginal with respect to typical lexical resources of the sixteenth-century Polish. Some of them, however, (e.g., pomorze), became popular in the seventeenth-century Polish, which attests to the transformations of the Polish lexis in that century.

Regionalizm frekwencyjny w badaniach historycznojęzykowych (część 1. Zarys problematyki badawczej)
Michalska, Paulina
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The aim of the article is to draw attention to the complexity of studies into various frequency of occurrence of linguistic phenomena, conditioned regionally, and to stress that it is an initial stage of such research in Polish Language Studies. The article also reveals the necessity to arrive at more precise formulations on theoretical level, especially of an ambiguous definition of the term frequential regionalism for the needs of the history of the Polish language. The notion of frequential regionalism, existing in the literature on the subject, has been discussed, and also, the questions directly connected with this notion and not included in its definition (differences between particular regions in frequency of a given form, varied frequency of use within a region and the duration of a phenomenon). Also, some issues have been indicated not directly connected with the definition of the discussed notion, but appearing in the studies concerning frequency: the choice of a representative and proportional source base; the means of determining regional origin of printed texts; characteristics of statistical research.

Progresywny czy tradycyjny – o postawie normatywnej Andrzeja Glabera z Kobylina w zakresie demorfologizacji rodzaju rzeczownika w formach celownika, narzędnika i miejscownika liczby mnogiej
Migdał, Jolanta
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article presents a normative attitude of Andrzej Glaber from Kobylin with reference to demorphologization of noun gender in plural of the dative, instrumental and locative case. The forms used by Glaber in his texts were confronted with the linguistic realities observed in Polish paleotypes published in Cracow in 1521-1522, in Polish letters from 1525-1550, in the letters of King Sigismund II Augustus to the Radziwiłs from the years 1547-1572 as well as in the translation of New Testament from The Bible of Brześć from 1563. The results of studies by Wojciech Ryszard Rzepka provide a comparative background, especially the studies focusing on period I, i.e., the years 1521-1535. From the analysed material, it can be gathered that also with regard to three noun cases, which are of interest to us, the progressive attitude of the liberal writer and editor—whom was Andrzej Glaber acting in the first half of the 16th century— was revealed. A great gift of anticipation of development tendencies enabled him to select, from the whole range of alternative endings, the ones which in the further development of the language proved victorious. This selection, sometimes, consisted in preference for definite forms and their domination in texts. Another time, the gist of a progressive attitude was based on precursory introduction, even in small numbers, of the form which only after many years, and even dozens of years, became common and standard in the literary Polish language.

Wariantywność w zakresie realizacji grup spółgłoskowych w listach polskich z pierwszej połowy XVI wieku (kontynuanty połączeń *sŕ, *zŕ, *žŕ, *-(s)tьc-, *-(z)dьc- oraz grupy (-)vš-, (-)xv-, -dl-)
Osiewicz, Marek
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The purpose of the article is to describe the limits of phonetic variance within consonant groups listed in the article’s title and evidenced in Polish letters from the years 1525−1550, additionally taking into account the degree of standardization of individual variants, and also their chronological, phonetic, lexical, geographic and textual (idiolectic) conditioning. It stems from the presented analysis that within the discussed questions, the textual norm of the letters has a rather conservative character, which is corroborated by sole occurrence of traditional forms in the group of norm-creating variants. Despite this, the Polish language of the letters is characterised by significant openness – owing to a considerable share of innovative forms in the group of variants remaining outside the norm, although the majority of the analysed phonetic representations (13 forms) are the variants which were not accepted in the future by usage and the norm; some of them are the forms with limited, often dialectal (and even slang) scope. It must be also noted that within the analysed consonant groups, the Polish language used in the letters represents the situation basically identical with the situation presented in the printed texts from that period. There is just one significant difference concerning the simplification of the group (-)xv- ≥ (-)f-, with quite numerous evidence in the discussed letters (44%), and unrecorded in the studies on the Polish language of the printed material of the first half of the 16th century.

„Handlująca Warszawa” w drugiej połowie XIX wieku, czyli słownictwo z zakresu handlu w Lalce Bolesława Prusa
Pihan-Kijasowa, Alicja
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The vocabulary concerning trade has been accompanying human activity for centuries, thus, it is no wonder that the core of the Polish vocabulary in this thematic field stems from Proto-Slavic times (e.g., cena [price], darmo [free], kupić [buy], pieniądz [money], płacić [pay]). On the Polish soil, we can observe the processes increasing the pool of this vocabulary: these are vernacular derivative processes and borrowings of foreign words. In this way, the contemporary dictionary of the thematic field TRADE has been formed. Lalka (“The Doll”) by Bolesław Prus, a novel representing classical realism, is rooted in Polish social and economic realities of the second half of the 19th century – it depicts the arrival and strengthening of capitalism, mainly in the sphere of trade. This implies the introduction into the novel of an extensive, composed of over 300 units, lexicon which groups the words that, by definition or by context, are connected with this sphere of the protagonists’ activity. The centre of the discussed thematic field is formed by word fields of the main notions from this sphere, such as: handel [trade], sklep [shop], sprzedawca [shop attendant], kupujący [buyer], kupować [buy], sprzedawać [sell], płacić [pay], pieniądz [money], cena [price]. Being entangled in various lexical contexts, they also show the contemporary scope of meaning of individual words as well as the possibility to modify them by lexical environment.

Nazwy osób (ze względu na cechy psychiczne) w polszczyźnie miejskiej Poznania
Piotrowicz, Anna
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
Witaszek-Samborska, Małgorzata
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article presents the regional names of persons from Poznań, considering their psychic features attributed to denotations. The repertoire of features reflected in personal names of the urban dialect of Poznań (differentiated here only from the point of view of psychic features) confirms the conclusion drawn from the analysis of quotations illustrating individual entries of Słownik gwary miejskiej Poznania (“Dictionary of the Urban Dialect of Poznań”) edited by Monika Gruchmanowa and Bogdan Walczak (and published in an earlier article), that the stereotype and autostereotype of a resident of Poznań finds no reflection in those features. The characteristics regarded as typical for poznańska pyra* (*a negative designation of Poznań residents) constitute a meaningful core for just few names (e.g. avarice in regional lexemes gryzinera // gryzinyra or nyrol), whereas more numerous are the designations connoting ordinary vices (such as: excessive agility, dishonesty, cheekiness, roguery and hooliganism, infantilism and plaintiveness, mental heaviness, stupidity, clumsiness, untidiness, talkativeness, gossipiness, querulousness, gloominess and taciturnity, wickedness, vulgarity, arrogance etc.), characteristic for people in general, regardless of their place of residence.

Asymilacje pod względem dźwięczności w grupach spółgłoskowych w polszczyźnie XVI i pierwszej połowy XVII wieku (na podstawie druków krakowskich)
Pyrkosz, Anna
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The aim of the article is to present the problem of assimilation with reference to tone within consonant groups (inside words and at word boundaries) in the Polish language of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century. Research material is analysed in three synchronic sections, making it possible to capture the dynamics of change. On the basis of the collected material, general tendencies have been determined for particular periods and dominants with reference to orthography of consonant groups, which are compared with individual orthographic solutions applied by individual publishing houses. It was possible to conclude from the results of the studies that tonal assimilations did not belong, during the analysed period, to mass phenomena, although their examples can be found in every text. Moreover, noticeable is the tendency to limit the variant character of records concerning heterogeneous consonant groups, which is expressed by the decline in the number of assimilated forms in the subsequent study periods.

„Szczęście to przemijanie/ nam też zniknąć trzeba” – kilka uwag o przemijaniu w poezji ks. Jana Twardowskiego
Rybka, Małgorzata
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
Sławek, Jolanta
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The authors have made an inevitable transitoriness in the poetry by priest Jan Twardowski into the theme of their article. The poet stresses that not only people are subject to unavoidable passing of time but also their feelings, the seasons, the surrounding nature, towns, buildings or just ordinary objects. All earthly creatures and organisms are mortal, but only man feels sadness on realizing transitoriness of their material existence and passing away of other beings. Transitoriness, however, is considered by priest Twardowski as something positive, as being happiness. Human life on earth is short, transitory, always heads towards unavoidable death, which is not the end, though, but transition to another life, a moment of achieving knowledge, getting to know God, the experience of true love. Human life in the poetry of Twardowski is most often presented as a way, a pilgrimage, whereas death is depicted as passing through the gate of life, a border crossing; a journey. The quality of life depends on the choices made by people and on the values they adopt. Life and death, worldliness and supernaturality, time and eternity, heaven and earth, similarly to hope and despair, love and loneliness, joy and pain, faith and the lack of it—form a unity; only when we experience them all, can we find a true sense of existence.

Słowotwórstwo protonazwisk polskich doby staro- i średniopolskiej
Sieradzki, Andrzej
The paper is trying to answer the question which word-formative types, of the ones capable of being isolated by structural analysis of derivative, transformed into word-formation models of surnames.
The conducted analyses revealed that word-formation models of surnames were created only from the types that became obsolete. The up-to-date types, in turn, did not form a separate model. The created models were used for structural modification of the already existing surnames, the formation of new ones and Polonization of foreign surnames.

Nowe oblicza informacji. O sposobach uatrakcyjniania przekazów informacyjnych na przykładzie „Faktów” TVN
Sobczak, Barbara
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article presents a pragmatic and linguistic analysis of a special type of media reporting—a news magazine, conducted with respect to verbal and nonverbal means used by media broadcasters in order to create most attractive reports for an average media consumer. Attractiveness is understood here as an ability to get and hold viewers’ attention. The analysis of 14 evening editions of Fakty, emitted from 8th until 20th May 2009, as well as a constant monitoring of the media, demonstrated that attractiveness understood in this special way is influenced by: 1) dramaturgy of the program achieved by operating with such means as sound and picture, the choice of subjects, taking into account psychology of the audience, their composition and the way of relating the events, at best from a private perspective, 2) elaborations on the topic, that is such a presentation of the subjects which satisfies the needs of an average recipient, 3) strategies of building a union between news broadcasters and recipients, based on references to the unity of place and time, of knowledge and experiences, and also making use of a colloquial style and retrospection, 4) the use of dialogue, stimulating attention and getting viewers involved in the discourse, and finally 5) personalization. All of these means are utilized to create a unique TV news spectacle, in which, as it seems, it is of lesser importance to inform the audience precisely about the events that took place, than to convey certain impressions and emotions.

Informacyjność a ozdobność tytułów w tekstach żałobnych XVII wieku
Wiśniewska, Halina
Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie
“Pompa funebris” of the 17th century, was not only a coffin portrait but also a mournful text in verse or in prose, including numerous sermons. They were usually printed as separate texts, and only renowned preachers, e.g., P. Skarga, included them in their books.
Such texts were criticised for excessively long titles and ornamentality, because the then conceptism has not been taken into account. Conceptism valued the amazement of listeners and readers by means of, for instance, ornamentality of metaphors and very numerous imaginary and surprising allusions to heraldic elements.
If we isolate three main parts on the title page, it becomes manifest that it is the title which is visibly ornamental. Also, the part providing exact information about the deceased person surprises us with praises in her/his honour and a complex naming system of positions and offices. Similarly, the information about the authors (apart from the recognized poets) is very detailed and amplifies their positions and titles.
We discern in the above a reflection of the writing “fashion”, compliant with the presumptions of Baroque rhetoric and stylistics, but also the conviction of the nobles (magnates), searching for confirmation of their value through superlatives and conspicuous manifestation of wealth and weirdness.

Kolory Afryki w powieści Henryka Sienkiewicza W pustyni i w puszczy. Część II: ludzie i ich wytwory
In the descriptions of people, the narrator pays attention to the differences in the skin colour of the Europeans, Blacks and Arabs. Sienkiewicz devoted less attention to the colours of clothes or ornaments worn by African residents.
The lexis used in the novel, belonging to the field of colours, although semantically quite rich and formally varied, is not very original. There dominate here typical adjectival designations used in their basic meanings, instead of inventive comparisons or metaphors, e.g., biały (white), czarny (black), czerwony (red), zielony (green), żółty (yellow), niebieski (blue), różowy (pink), szary (grey), srebrny (silver), złoty (gold).
In the studied novel, the field of red has been documented with most examples (e.g., czerwonoskóry (red-skinned), czerwony (red), koralowy (coral), krwawy (bloody), ognisty (fiery), purpurowy (purple), wiśniowy (cherry), zaczerwieniony (reddened); czerwono (red), pąsowo (bright red), wiśniowo (cherry); purpura (purple), rubin (ruby); czerwienić się (to become red), zaczerwienić się (to redden)), and further on: the field of white (for example: białawy (whitish), biały (white), pobladły (pale), śnieżny (snowy), wybielony (whitened), zbielały (bleached); biało (white); pobielenie (whitening); blednąć (to become pale), bielić się (to grow white), pobieleć (to become white), poblednąć (to grow pale), wybieleć (to grow white), zabielić się (to paint white), zblednąć (to turn pale)), the field of blue (for example: błękitnawy (bluish), błękitny (azure), granatowy (navy blue), jasnoniebieski (light blue), niebieski (blue), sinawy (glaucous), siny (livid), siwobłękitny (grey blue); błękitno (blue); błękit (azure); sinieć (to become livid)), the field of green (for example: ciemnozielony (dark green), jasnozielony (bright green), koloru morskiej wody (the colour of sea-water), szarozielony (grey-green), zielonawy (greenish), zielony (green); zielonawo (greeny), zielono (green); zieloność (greenness)), and also the field of black (for example: barwy węgla (the colour of coal), czarny (black), poczerniały (blackened), sczerniały (turned black); czarno (black); czernieć (to grow black), czernić się (to go black), sczernieć (to grow black)), the field of grey (for example: płowoszary (tan-grey), popielaty (ash-coloured), stalowy (steel-like), szary (grey), szyfrowy (slate), zielonoszary (green-grey); poszarzeć (to become grey)), the field of brown (for example: brunatny (tawny), kasztanowy (auburn), opalony (suntanned), rudy (ginger), smagły; opalać się (to bronze), opalić się (to get a suntan)), the field of yellow (for example: cynamonowy (cinnamon), płowożółty (buff-yellow), płowy (buff), woskowy (wax), żółty (yellow)), the field of silver (for example: srebrny (silver), srebrzysty (silvery); srebrno (silver); posrebrzeć (to silver-plate), rozsrebrzyć (to become silvery)), the field of pink (for example: różany, różowy; różowo; różowieć), the field of gold (for example: złoty (golden); złoto (gold); złocić się (to show golden)) and the field of violet (for example: lila (lilac), liliowy (lilac); ametyst (amethyst)). In the field of varied colours we can find, among others, such designations as: pręgowany (striped), pstry (spotted), siedmiobarwny (seven-coloured), różnobarwny (many-coloured), różnokolorowy (colourfull), drgać odblaskami pawich piór (tremble with reflections of peacock feathers), mienić się jak opale (to shimmer like opals), mienić się jak tęcza (to shimmer like a rainbow), mienić się i grać wszelkimi barwami jak wielkie kwiaty (to glitter and play with all colours like huge flowers), przybrać barwę muszli perłowej (to assume the colour of a pearl conch). Among the general descriptions of colours we can enumerate the adjective kolorowy (colourful) and the expression jaskrawo upierzony (brightly feathered), which can signify both mono-, as well as multi- colours of the realities being described.
In the studied novel, there are quite numerous examples of words from the field signalling different intensity of light, from full brightness to absolute darkness, for instance: blady (pale), blado (pale), blask (radiance), blednąć (to grow pale), jasny (bright), rozjaśnić (to light up), światło (light), ciemny (dark), ciemno (dark), ciemność/ciemność tak gęsta, że prawie namacalna (darkness/darkness so thick as almost touchable), ćma (moth), mrok (dimness), pociemnieć (to make dark), ściemnić się (to become dark).
Two adjectives designating colours manifest the greatest frequency, i.e., biały (white) (106 occurrences in the text) and czarny (black) (58 occurrences), and subsequently – according to the frequency of use – the adjectives: czerwony – red (24), różowy – pink (16), zielony – green (13), żółty – yellow (10), płowy – buff (9), szary – grey (9), srebrny – silver (7), niebieski – blue (6), złoty – gold (6), białawy – whitish (5), błękitny – blue (5), purpurowy – purple (5), popielaty – ash-coloured (4).
Additionally, attention should be brought to the designations of colours in less typical forms, e.g., comparisons, metonymy, metaphor. Among the comparative expressions we can find the designations frequently used in Polish, such as: biały jak kreda/mleko/papier/śnieg (as white as chalk/milk/paper/snow), czarny jak aksamit/kir/noc (as black as velvet/pall/night ), czarno jak w piwnicy (as black as in the cellar), czerwony jak krew (as red as blood), szary jak mysz (as grey as a mouse). Among the designations of colours which are less typical than the ones mentioned above there are collocations such as: drgać odblaskami pawich piór (tremble with reflections of peacock feathers), mieć barwę czystego ametystu (to have the colour of pure amethist), przybrać barwę muszli perłowej (to assume the colour of a pearl conch), mienić się jak opale (to shimmer like opals), mienić się jak tęcza (to shimmer like a rainbow).
There is definitely more information about the colours of the world depicted in the studied novel by Sienkiewicz than in The Trilogy written by the same author, especially when we take into account the differences in length of the analysed writings. In the novel In Desert and Wilderness there dominate the descriptions of colours of nature—which is exotic for Polish readers—rather than people, which results, among others, in greater frequency of designations from the colour field ascribed to African flora (green and pink) if we compare it with The Trilogy.

Funkcja słownictwa medycznego w twórczości Stefana Żeromskiego (uwagi wstępne)
Jankowiak, Lucyna Agnieszka
Instytut Slawistyki Polskiej Akademii Nauk
Stefan Żeromski was an expert in medical vocabulary. This was a result of his interest in medicine. He used medical vocabulary in his output in its basic function, that is in order to characterize the health of his characters, and in a secondary function. The secondary function involved using medical vocabulary (not only Polish) to describe various phenomena and situations. Among others, he used it to describe the emotional situations of characters; their behaviour and actions, social and political situation, as well as nature, space, objects, literature and art.

Iść w trupa – o jednym ze źródeł współczesnej polskiej frazeologii
Kosek, Iwona
Uniwersytet Warmińsko-Mazurski w Olsztynie
This article deals with modern Polish phraseology and one of the sources of its enrichment. The author discusses the motivation behind the idiom iść w trupa – in sports jargon ‘to fight hard, regardless of risk to the body’, literally ‘to go into the corpse’ (according to the degrees of motivation described by Andrzej Maria Lewicki). While the phrase comes from the language of sport, it has acquired a new meaning in colloquial language. In the article, the idiom’s semantic features in the sociolect and the colloquial Polish are discussed. The second part of the paper presents a few general remarks on sporting phraseology.

Polskie leksemy o rdzeniu piecz-/piek- pochodne od piec się
Krótki, Zuzanna
Uniwersytet Śląski w Katowicach
In this article, the author presents the lexical family with piecz-/piek- roots. A pool of 39 lexemes was extracted from all the available lexicographic sources of historical vocabulary and presented in the form of a word-forming cluster. The goal of the analysis was to display the internal structure of the chronological derivation of the core of the cluster, piec się with the group of terms of varying degrees of derivation. The analysis is an attempt at explaining the meaning behind the formations with piecz-/piek-roots. The reconstruction of the cluster leads to a discussion of the observed transformations, as well as identifying the nature of the changes to the meaning of specific units. To a large extent, the semantic modifications discussed contributed to constraints in the meaning. Once the primary meaning had disappeared, Polish language users would gradually become less aware of the word formation of the derivatives. Subsequently, the very large etymological cluster disintegrated.

Oboczność ir // er (≤ *ŕ̥) w Księgach o gospodarstwie (Kraków 1549, Helena Unglerowa)
Osiewicz, Marek
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
This article is a continuation of research into the textual differentiation of the distribution of the variant phonetic forms in Księgi o gospodarstwie by Piotr Krescentyn of 1549. The analysis includes forms with the ir // er (≤ *ŕ̥) groups. While the diversity of the textual distribution of the surveyed forms pertains to only six roots: -ḿ_řv-, -v́_řb-, -ṕ_rv-, -č_rń, -tv́_rʒ-, -v́_řx-, it is quite considerable as it encompasses 10 textual areas coinciding with the text segmentation typical of previous (graphic and phonetic) analyses. Three text layers indicate the typesetter’s intervention. As for the analysed form, the part containing the 381a–R10v quarts was the most standardised chunk of the text; it is also quite conservative with respect to the solutions in the area analysed. The analysis also demonstrates that the demarcation line between the Q and R quarts, as indicated by Kazimierz Piekarski on the basis of a typographic analysis, coincides with the demarcation line of phonetic phenomena.

Rada jako narzędzie perswazji w projekcie dydaktycznym O wychowaniu dzieci uchodźców Juliusza Jedlińskiego
Pałucka-Czerniak, Iwona
Uniwersytet Zielonogórski
The article presents the use of a simple genre of advice in a teaching project from the nineteenth century. The publication which is the subject of the analysis is by Julius Jedliński, and refers to the Polish national school called L’École polonaise des Batignolles in Paris. This document certifies that emigres discussed the value of the Polish language as a determinant of Polish identity. Effective ways of teaching the children of immigrants Polish language and culture were sought. The author of the publication presented the concept of changes in the school curriculum. As a means of persuasion he primarily used advice. The reception of the proposal by Jedliński was not favourable. The analysis of responses reveals transformations in the basic block of communicative intentions of the advice, which is interpreted as an order, complaint, or even a threat. On this basis, the attention is drawn to the importance of the communicative context in the interpretation of advice. As a result of the public nature of an act of speech and the extension of the audience while maintaining the desired recipient, the decisiveness of any advice is increased and a modification of a simple genre takes place.

O regionalności XVII-wiecznych kazań pogrzebowych. Część III: druki gdańskie
Pihan-Kijasowa, Alicja
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
Motyl, Agnieszka
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
Funeral sermons published in the 17th century in Poland constitute an impressive collection of more than 600 texts. They must have been printed by all the contemporary printers in Małopolska, Wielkopolska, Silesia, Mazowsze, Pomerania and the Eastern Borderlands. They were written by monks and priests of various denominations, some of them seasoned preachers, and some clergy without experience or talent. Fairly large numbers of these sermons have been preserved as part of the heritage of each of the printing centres. However, barely 17 funeral addresses printed in the 17th century in Danzig have survived, representing less than 3% of the total domestic output of this type of literature. With this article in mind, we have selected seven sermons written by Catholic priests and representatives of other denominations. The final research material formed the basis for deliberations on 17th century Polish, with special emphasis placed on its regional characteristics. Before that, information was gleaned on the printing circles in Gdańsk, the origins and professional education of the contemporary printers and the sermons’ authors. While we do not know many of the authors’ biographies, there are some common linguistic features in the texts that can be traced back to the Pomerania region by means of historical dialectology; for example disruptions in the distribution of the vowels i and y, de-palatalization of the sound l (pronounced lyst), de-palatalization of the sounds ḱ, ǵ (pronounced ludzky, Pomorsky), a de-palatalized ending of the instrumental case in plural nouns, adjectives and pronouns (pronounced cnotamy, wielkimy), replacing consonantal clusters Š, Ś, S and several less significant linguistic facts. A majority of the above mentioned features occur in all the texts printed in Gdańsk. However, there are sermons in which the linguistic features characteristic of Pomerania (and of the authors, or editors) are particularly frequent (e.g. the sermon by Andrzej Skata, published by Filip Chrystian Rhete).

Biblizmy we współczesnej literaturze popularnej na przykładzie „Kolekcji Kryminałów” Joanny Chmielewskiej
Gorzelana, Joanna
Uniwersytet Zielonogórski
The aim of the work is to highlight the vitality and functional diversity of biblisms in contemporary ‘low’ literature imitating everyday language. This article presents the results of the use dozens of lexical units. Sometimes biblisms are modified- most often they are mentioning modifications (eg. Man cannot live by bed alone ← Man cannot live by bread alone). Less frequently we meet shortening modifications (eg. pluck hair ←pluck the hair out) and developing ones(have some remains of oil in the head ← have oil in the head). These modifications can often be justified contextually. Biblisms used in crime novels usually emphasize the seriousness of the situation and they can also introduce an element of humor.

Językowa kreacja nieba i piekła w Tragedii o bogaczu i Łazarzu z 1643 roku
Kępka, Izabela
Uniwersytet Gdański
The main goal of the article is showing the language creation of hell and heaven presented in The tragedy about the rich man and Lazarus in XVII c.
Language creation of hell and heaven in this story is showing it stereotypically. Heaven is a place where God and other peaceful creatures live (also souls of people that lived well on Earth). Hell is a dark abyss, where the fire of hell (which is not shining) is the main source of pain for the condemned. A human being which got into hell will never get out. It is out of God’s forgiveness range.
The image of those two places in the Tragedy serves mainly the persuasion which is closely connected with the genre of the morality. Language creation of hell and heaven in the Tragedy was written by uncomplicated linguistic means.

This article presents techniques for creating a negative image of a party and their representatives in Internet memes. The author indicates the typical for memes linguistic measures used for depreciation of individual politicians and at the same time contributing to the perpetuation of their axiologically unequivocal image, usually based on a single exaggerated feature. The author analyses examples of repetitions of lapses committed by politicians, key words that characterize them according to memetic scheme, descriptive and evaluative names replacing the names, verbal jokes based on polysemy and homonymy as well as spelling innovation.

Słowotwórstwo nazwisk mieszkańców wsi we wrzesińskich księgach chrztu z XVIII wieku
Sieradzki, Andrzej
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article studies name derivatives referring to rural population recorded in the eighteenth-century baptismal books of Września. The core of the study are 164 surnames formed by the addition of the suffixes -ski, -ewicz, -owicz as well as the basic -k-. The studies completed demonstrate that in the process of creation of names, over the entire 18th century, the most dominating were the word formation models with suffixes including the basic -k-. Within this category the suffix -ak was the most active element. Of marginal importance (only in the creation of formal derivatives) was the suffix -ski and the derived suffixes. Only 20 formations were created with their use during the whole century. On the basis of the analysis of the documents, it can be assumed that in the rural area near Września there were no word-formative models with the formatives -ewicz and -owicz. The attested surnames (7), recorded between 1753 and 1760, must have been brought from other areas.

Polski dyskurs patriotyczny w prasie i w pismach okolicznościowych z 2. połowy XVIII wieku
Siuciak, Mirosława
Uniwersytet Śląski
The article examines the process of shaping of the Polish patriotic discourse, which was determined by such events of the 18th century as the Bar Confederation, the Great Sejm proceedings, and the Kościuszko Uprising. In a situation in which Poland was threatened with the invasion of surrounding world powers and in the face of impending armed struggle for sovereignty, the then most important values uniting the Polish nation were formulated. The first entity to define them were the Bar confederates, who fought against the Russian army in defence of their fatherland, religion, freedom, and independence. In the 1790s the patriotic discourse shifted to the press covering the proceedings of the Great Sejm, and later to newspaper coverage of the Kościuszko Uprising. During these events, the freedom demands were altered because the conservative Sarmatian republicanism had been replaced with ‚new’ republicanism – characterised by social radicalism and supporting the separation of church and state. Despite some semantic shifts, for more than 200 years the most significant values constituting the Polish patriotic discourse have been: fatherland, freedom, and independence.

Nie trwam o jedzę, kiedy dobrze siedzę. O jedzeniu i żarciu w paremiologii polskiej dawnej i współczesnej
Skorupska-Raczyńska, Elżbieta
Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła im. Jakuba z Paradyża w Gorzowie Wielkopolskim
The analysis of 694 proverbs selected from widely accessible collections allows their classification into semantic fields ranging from names of foods, ways of eating, the necessity and urge to eat as well as the effects of eating, to the rules of eating and conduct during meals. Most of the proverbs analysed refer to actual situations (ca. 84%); the remaining (ca. 16%) include metaphors that illustrate or codify social behaviours and their consequences. Proverbs registered in the 19th century written Polish language constitute over a half (52,4%) of the data, while those from the 20th century amount to over one fourth (26,3%). The rest (26,3%) is dated as coming from the 15th–18th century. Over 72% of the proverbs analysed are syntactically complex with regular sound instrumentation and about 28% are syntactically simple. The analysis brings out a very important need to regulate the rules of the eating process and of conduct while eating, as well as the significance of healthy nutrition.

Słownik języka Jana Chryzostoma Paska odczytany feministycznie
Sobolewska, Katarzyna
Instytut Języka Polskiego Polskiej Akademii Nauk
The feminist interpretation of The Dictionary of the language of Jan Chryzostom Pasek consisted in searching for information on the status and position of women during the baroque period, and in tracing these lexicographic tools, which revealed the hierarchy of gender related values employed by its editors. The analysis focused on lexicographic articles describing persons of female gender in juxtaposition with their male counterparts. The Dictionary reflects all of the central features of patriarchal culture of Polish Sarmatia and the entailed asymmetry of gender roles. However, as the gender category has not been sufficiently accounted for in the lexicographic treatment of personal nouns, The Dictionary does not appreciate some of the cultural content.

Pudełko Srebrne do Hoſtyi bez przykrywadła. O sposobach określania przedmiotów w inwentarzach kościelnych
Żuraszek-Ryś, Iwona
Uniwersytet Zielonogórski
This article focuses on methods of specifying mobile objects in the ecclesiastical inventories. The research material comes from the manuscript entitled: The revision of the treasury of the Poznań cathedral (Revisio Thesauri Ecelesiae Cathedralis Poznaniensis), which is located in the Archives of the Archdiocese of Poznań under the inventory number DK pap IV/003. This document was drawn up on 6th July 1719 and certifies revision of the treasury of the cathedral in Poznań. The person who was preparing this document had to face the difficulty of describing objects located in the treasury by means of appropriate language. The choice of objects was not a coincidence. Descriptions were used for identification of relevant specimen and had to be as precise and comprehensive so that it was possible to identify a relevant object.
The specifications of mobile items stored in the treasury have the analytic form of different length that mainly depends on a number of objects with the same functions. The more such objects were stored, the more elaborated description had to be attached that would include more differentiating factors. The Polish name of the object was an obligatory part of these syntactic and semantic language structures. The description also specifies: a kind of material the item was made of, its appearance, size, purpose for which it was used, a number of subsequent items of the same kind as well as the data concerning founders and owners of those objects.

Semantic structure of verbs of movement in Azerbaijani and Polish languages and their lexicographic description
Abdullayeva, Samira Farkhad
Bakijski Uniwersytet Słowiański
This article analyses semantic structures of verbs of movement in Azerbaijani and Polish languages in currently available dictionaries.
Fuzziness becomes clearly visible in differentiating various sememes in the structure of the content of the words. In bilingual dictionaries right, decal part periodically copies the left. Thus, units of the second language are described under the influence of the units of the first language. Comparison of verbs of movement in Azerbaijani and Polish languages shows that these verbs disproportionately affect asymmetry, but in Azerbaijani language it is conveyed more vividly. In both languages the basic sememe gives rise to metaphorical conceptualization and engagement in phrase formation based on the integration of a natural movement form.
Analysis of the existing dictionaries indicates that the semantic structure of the verbs of movement1 is not always accurately revealed in the process of lexicographic description. Consequently, one of the directions of an exploratory research should be aimed at identifying discrepancies, their explanation and motivation of the proposed correction. In this article we’ll review an expression of sememe “crawl” in Azerbaijani and Polish languages.

Idiolekt Bolesława Prusa. Przegląd najnowszych ustaleń
Czachorowska, Magdalena
Uniwersytet Kazimierza Wielkiego w Bydgoszczy
This article is intended to approximate arrangements for features characteristic writing of Prus, from the publication of monographs, which appeared in the last decade, after 2006, because they are not as well known as the earlier comments on writer’s idolect placed even in studies Bystroń or Bachórz. Notes on writing of Prus has been divided into several thematic areas: vocabulary topography (depicting the formation of landscape, the author’s preferred method of constructing space and filling it with specific object), color names (the world of colours, which enabled the writer to expose an entire palette of colour and shade names), floral vocabulary, used by the writer, war and military (this article contains an overview of the functions of military language within nomina militaria in the works of Bolesław Prus for example) and trade vocabulary.

Kategoria Innego jako element dyskursu tożsamościowego w średniopolskich katalogach władców – perspektywa krzyża
Hawrysz, Magdalena
Uniwersytet Zielonogórski
This sketch concerns the notions of groups that were considered aliens by the old Poles. Methodologically the work remains in the circle of ethnolinguistic research. The analysis uses the tools developed by the theory of linguistic image of the world. Material has been excerpted from 4 catalogs of rulers created in the period from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century. In the observed catalogs, there are three points of view, from the perspective of which the alien is categorized; these are the optics of a sword, cross, crown. The reconstruction of the infidels’ image in the article is carried out in the context of the functions this category plays in the era of shaping and preservation of national identity in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country.

Kilka uwag o polskiej terminologii chemicznej 2. połowy XIX wieku
Jankowiak, Lucyna Agnieszka
Instytut Slawistyki Polskiej Akademii Nauk
The purpose of this article is to present a source that has so far remained unused in the historical research of the Polish chemical terminology of the second half of the 19th century – Słownik terminologii lekarskiej polskiej [English: Polish Medical Terminology Dictionary] of 1881. This dictionary is a result of the efforts which the Polish medical doctors undertook to organise the Polish medical terminology in the 19th century. It also contains chemical terms. What is important, the dictionary demonstrates a phase of competition between two terminology schools: the Cracow school and the Warsaw school, juxtaposing various terms (mainly in synonymic strings) proposed by these schools.

Rodzina i sprawy rodzinne w staropolskich pismach polemicznych
Kamieniecki, Jan
Uniwersytet Wrocławski
The article presents ways of using motives related to family matters in Old Polish documents written by catholic and Protestant polemicists in both metaphorical and reality oriented content. As the analysed materials shows it was a common practice to use family related motives in religious polemics and to describe real or fictitious pathological phenomena. However, there is no a positive vision of marriage and family in the discussed polemic works. Recalling phenomena unacceptable for the society of that period was aimed at creating a proper image of a religious opponent. However, it led to significant simplification of theological argumentation.

W stronę rytualnego chaosu – o uwodzeniu polityką w programie Kawa na ławę Bogdana Rymanowskiego
Kula, Agnieszka
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The text focuses on the analysis of the programme, which is categorised by the editorial team as “political journalism”. The author is trying to show her doubts regarding the lack of connection between the definition of the word ‘politics’ and anything that appears in media’s offer in such category. She points out how the broadcasters nurture in the audience the belief that the viewed programme deals with political problems and the issues of public area which are important for conscious citizens. Among the set of tools and means used throughout the programme, she highlights the following: usage of concealing type indicators, activation of keywords included in semantic fields derived from the noun ‘politics’; moving the focus from the public area to the private one; staging antagonistic scenes and critical situations. The presented tendencies to stage the reality fit into the mechanism of ‘seducing with politics’, using the citizen sphere as a pretext for focusing first and foremost on emotions, assumptions and controversies.

Zróżnicowanie tekstowe, zakres i stopień normalizacji wariantywności fonetycznej w Księgach o gospodarstwie (Kraków 1549, Helena Unglerowa)
Osiewicz, Marek
Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
The article summarize a number of analysis of the phonetic variance acknowledged in the first Polish edition of Księgi o gospodarstwie by Piotr Krescentyn (Kraków 1549, H. Unglerowa). Investigated issues included: textual differentiation, scope and degree of normalization of the particular alternations. In a sample of 11 analyzed phonetic oppositions the biggest textual differentiation demonstrate: mdl- || -mgl-, jestli || jesli, biał- || białł- oraz miedzy || między. The most clearly seen border of textual forms differentiation runs between column 384 and 381a and is already known from the graphic and typographic analyses. The degree of normalization of the particular variants, diversified in terms of textual localization, allows to divide the examined antique print on 9 textual areas. Among these, two areas distinguish: Cresc61–137, with the lowest degree of normalization and the highest level of the regressive form usage, and Cresc573–605, characterized by high rates of the norm-setting variants occurrence and the progressive forms preference. Quite numerous dialect words from Wielkopolska, the most likely adopted from handwritten basis for print, appeared in the text. The results of analysis substantiate the hypothesis which attributes the translation authorship to Andrzej Glaber from Kobylin.
