The following paper describes the microgenetic analysis of the translation process of 'Le Petit Chaperon Rouge' carried out by six students during the Translation Seminar of Scientific and Literary Texts and its Didactics, instructed at the Institute of Research in Education of the University of Veracruz. This article’s purpose is to demonstrate the process which was carried out during the microgenetic analysis, as well as to give an initial report of its results and the advantages that this kind of analysis could represent for the translation teaching-learning process. Furthermore, we describe the computer program called El Espía, which enabled us to explore thoroughly and automatically the students’ translation process, in order to identify learning scenarios and carried out a microgenetic analysis.
In the present article the subjectification process is being discussed in relation to the concept of interactional dynamics. It is suggested that to encode various semantic-pragmatic profiles can lead to changes at the level of communicative behavior patterns, which, for their part, are dominated by a particular order of socio-cultural conventionalization. The scope of conversational markers or nominal forms of address (NFA), which are submitted to analysis in the present study, indicates that the routinizing language use, together with an explicit grammatical manifestation, covers areas that appear to be semantically and pragmatically important in a given speaking community.

The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive, theoretical overview of how proverbs are used as a communicative and discursive strategy, taking into account the speaker’s communicative intention. I will pay attention both to the benefits of the use of this type of formulaic sequence in the construction of the speech, and to the illocutionary force and pragmatic implications entailed by these utterances. In order to do so, some considerations will be required – the encoding of the meaning of the proverbs, the decoding process by the addressee, and the way proverbs are inserted in the discourse. This paper inspects the importance of such factors as the need for articulation of fluent speech, the assumption of cultural patterns, the appeal to proverbiality that aligns the speaker with power structures of the community, or the masking of the speaker’s voice behind a collective entity in order to socialize and release tensions related to interpersonal contact.

Epistemic modality indicates the degree of certainty or doubt a speaker has for the proposition expressed by their utterance. Evidentiality, on the other hand, is the indication of the kind of evidence for a statement in question. Given the eminently persuasive character of homiletic discourse, it frequently makes use of epistemic and evidential markers. The preacher emphasizes his high degree of certainty about the content of what he says and, in order to gain credibility, he supports his reasons citing the Bible or other reliable sources. This paper aims to analyze the markers of epistemic modality and evidentiality in Catholic sermons in Spanish. Moreover, it intends to defi ne the limit between different kinds of evidence. In order to carry out this analysis, twenty homilies pronounced in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City have been examined. First of all, the defi nitions of epistemic modality and evidentiality are presented and the relation between these concepts is explored. Then, a classification of evidential values, based on the one by Plungian (2001: 351, 353), is illustrated. After that, the results of the analysis of epistemic modality and evidentiality in twenty sermons are discussed. Finally, the paper touches upon some problematic issues resulting from the classifi cation of different kinds of evidence.

The problems of intercultural communication: didactic considerations for teaching languages
La problemática de la comunicación intercultural: consideraciones didácticas para la enseñanza de las lenguas

intercultural communication
intercultural competence

acculturation
The coexistence of different nations, races i.e. cultures in the same social space that could be a country, a village or even a company is already a fact. Nowadays, not taking into account the tools of intercultural communication may result in damaging every communicative act. We believe that there is a necessity for revising and explaining the concepts related to the subject of intercultural communication from the perspective of foreign language teaching. In this article we will discuss such concepts as: interculturalism, transculturation, acculturation, integration, identity, etc. We will also look into the origin of intercultural communication. All these reflections will bring us closer to the intercultural competence which, in our opinion, students of foreign languages, i.e. intercultural speakers, should possess. In conclusion, we present the main objectives of the Common Frame of Reference for the Languages of the Council of Europe (2002) with regard to intercultural education.

Positive aspects of interlinguistic influences in the process of L2 acquisition
Aspectos positivos de las influencias intralingüísticas en el proceso de adquisición de L2

interlanguage
The processes that take place in the mind of a multilingual person during the second language acquisition are mostly shrouded in mystery. We can only observe traces of these processes manifesting themselves in the interpenetration of two or more linguistic systems. The current study aims to recognize how the knowledge of L1, in this case Spanish, influences on the acquisition and usage of the target language – Portuguese (L2), and how to take advantage of the interferences to make the L2 learners succeed. The possibility of linguistic influences grows with each acquired language. There are also important contributing factors such as a degree of similarity between the languages, a level of proficiency in each of them, and the manner and time of a language acquisition. During the Portuguese course at the Spanish Philology, we can observe such phenomena as: code switching or total displacement, hybrids, false friends, multi-word units calquing, and morphogrammatical transfer. Although one of the factors that affects the L2 acquisition is the level of proficiency, the students hardly take advantage of their mother tongue, selecting the language typologically closer to Portuguese, Spanish. The students use the previously acquired knowledge to create analogies that should be considered as an intermediate step in the acquisition of L2, not as something negative, but rather a means for providing a starting point for the analysis of error which, consequently, leads to improvement.

The article analyzes seven translations of the poem 'Miniatura średniowieczna' written by the Polish poet and Nobel Prize laureate Wisława Szymborska. The translations are into five languages: Spanish (2), Portuguese, French, English (2) and German. The poem can be construed as an ekphrasis of the illuminated manuscripts of the Late Gothic. The 'Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry' are cited as a possible source of inspiration. The poem’s stylistics reflect – or rather deconstruct – the philosophical and aesthetic values of the Late Middle Ages. In translation, the main points to consider are the creative use of superlatives and diminutives, as well as that of idioms, which the poet transforms, drawing attention to their cognitive origins. The different morpho-syntactic properties of the target languages offer varied possibilities of rendering the key elements. However, the aptitude of the translator is of even greater importance.

The technique for collecting available lexicon is based on surveys of open lists in which for two minutes informants recorded all the words that come to mind in relation to each center of interest, up to a total of 16 thematic stimuli. These stimuli were defined by Gougenheim et al. (1964) as the most universally representative semantic sectors. However, those centers of interest 'are disparate semantic categories: its ontogeny, their internal organization, nor its reach are the same' (Hernández Muñoz, 2006: 134). This article characterizes the centers of interest of the available lexicon tests and examines the taxonomies of the centers of interest proposed by different authors. Finally, it analyzes the organization of the lexical repertoires of Spanish as a Foreign Language, produced by a sample of 120 students from 3rd year in bilingual high school with Spanish in Warsaw (XXXIV Liceum), Kraków (VI Liceum) and Łódz (XXXII Liceum). Analysis gives attention to the type of partnerships that are prevalent in the bosom of the lexical sets, as well as describes in detail significant relationships that occur among the most frequent words.

This paper analyses the phenomenon of preiotacisation in Romanian, which consists in the prothesis of a semi-consonant [j] before the initial [e]. In fact, this is only an orthographic convention, because in most cases (eu, ele, ești, e, este, eram) the initial [je] segment is a proper diphthong of different origins that is written e, instead of ie, like in other words. Preiotacisation appears only in the pronouns el, ei and in the Old Romanian pronunciation of some borrowed words. The [j]-prothesis cannot be separated from other types of prothesis attested in the spoken language. This tendency is parallel to the similar phenomenon from Slavic languages and possibly was developed under their influence.

Marie-Claire Blais seeks to innovate, throughout her career, her 'antimimétique' writing. Her extensive pentalogy - Soifs (1995), Dans la foudre et la lumière (2001), Augustino et le choeur de la destruction (2005), Naissance de Rebecca à l’ère des tourments (2008), Mai au bal des prédateurs (2010) – offers a complex existential questioning of the actual situation of the man. The problem of Evil and Good, which is in the heart of questions and answers, is treated with an original narration, transforming Virginia Woolf’s stream of consciousness. This innovation, however, is rooted in the tradition, namely its baroque poetics and its community orientation, both attached to the affirmation / negation of the catholic heritage that marked Quebec.

Adventures of the narrative in two novels by Pierre Senges
Les aventures du narratif dans deux romans de Pierre Senges
Kroker, Wiesław
fiction
representation
postmodern writing
textuality
possible worlds
relativity of values
In his novels, Pierre Senges (born in 1968) constantly questions the limits of the literary representation as he emphasizes the textual nature of any fictional world. Veuves au maquillage (2000) is a relatively continuous narrative of an unusual suicide planned by the protagonist-narrator as a methodic murder gradually committed on him by his six mistresses, the six jealous widows; whereas Études de silhouettes (2010) consists of a series of short texts, each based on a phrase from Kafka’s drafts, without any thematic bounds between them. In Senges’s universe, the borders become blurred between different possible worlds so that the reader does not get the possibility to determine whether any of these worlds has a priority over the others. His postmodern writing is a lesson and a practice of relativity of values and significations.

To describe the world and to put some order into our contemporaneity, Emmanuelle Pireyre gathered in his novel titled Féérie générale (2012) numerous examples of situations that are symptomatic of the reality of the last years. Written in a way that highlights all the nuances of everyday life and interspersed either with the narrator’s opinions on modern society, or with dreams, extracts of electronic notices, anecdotes, or even with the presentation of a collection of kisses, the stories summarize the discontinuous and complex world. Denouncing the aberrations of society, the narrator confronts the clichés and the ideas people do not have time to think about, suggesting that we see in this world only the beautiful things, love and happiness, feelings considered futile by the thinkers and the creators. In this collection of magic things, Pireyre invites at the same time the readers to distance themselves from the disorder of the world and to live on a kind of islands of happiness.

Even though absurd humour and surreal scenes are at first sight the characteristic elements of Eric Chevillard’s style, it is an oversimplification to consider his novels as mere literary jokes. The appeal of this literature stems from the light and witty manner in which it transforms outdated novelistic conventions, deconstructs classic narrative strategies and refuses to fulfill the reader’s expectations. This article seeks to analyse minimal narration, an unusual mode of writing for Chevillard, in Oreille rouge: just like narrative excess, typical of his other works, it results in dematerialisation of the plot and redefinition of the novelistic structure.

The aim of the article is to provide a reading of Gilles Rozier’s novels in the context of the phenomenon of Jewish postmemory (Hirsch), which in recent literature acquires a new dimension. The texts selected for disscussion exemplify the return to narrative and to the subject in contemporary novel and signal a new approach to postmemory employed by the third generation of survivors, participants of the Jewish revival. In Rozier’s novels, and in texts by other contemporary writers (e.g., Daniel Mendelsohn in the USA or Piotr Paziński in Poland), while the memory of WWII does not disappear, the focus most often falls on the narrative of Jewish life before and after the Holocaust. Postmemory exists in those texts in the form of the transmission of the word, repossession of the language of ancestors, cultural continuity rather than silence and separation, which characterised the output of earlier generations of writers (such as, for example, Georges Perec).

Ego tango is the debut novel by a Belgian writer, Caroline de Mulder. In 2010, it won the most significant literary award in the country. The story is set in a closed circle of the Paris tango dancers. The present study examines the original narration of the novel and the construction of the plot, which are both subordinated to the introvert nature of the tango – a dance that becomes an addiction and an obsession. De Mulder’s text is an interesting example of a theoretical problem of the “correspondence of arts,” their mutual overlapping and co-dependence; in this particular case, literature and dance. This concerns both the music and the lyrics of the tangos, which constitute and integral component of the structure of the musical piece and determine the rhythm of the story being told, its atmosphere, mood and type of the relationship between the protagonists. The novel was inspired by the personal experience of the authoress – a tango dancer and was structured in accordance with the nature and the spirit of this dance.

The paper discusses contemporary condition of French erotic or/and pornographic novel. As social and cultural circumstances seem to put an end to its transgressive potential, the authors of this kind of writing tried, at first, to keep abreast of other media. Nevertheless, the “trash” or “grunge” novel as well as autofictional erotic writings were not able to satisfy the critics. The novels from L’instant erotique collection, written by specialists of erotic art, change the strategy and exploit the new state of cultural relations in which the role of this sort of literature is rather to imitate or to play with erotic or pornographic tradition, creating a new model of reception: very conscious and erudite.

Eugène Svitzkaya: formal experiments in an effort to make the most of life
Eugène Savitzkaya : une quête formelle pour savourer la vie
Teklik, Joanna
Belgium
contemporary novel
Savitzkaya
formal experiments
Savitzkaya, hardly known to French public, delights contemporary readers with his style, displaying both peculiar and variegated characteristics. Although he dispenses with the matters of genre, his latest texts (Célébration d’un mariage improbable et illimité, 2002, Exquise Louise, 2003, Fou trop poli, 2005) are still thought to represent the novel. His peculiarity lies in that he contrasts a daily routine with brilliantly worked form, nevertheless well suited to depict it. His predilection for language is pervasive in his style, showing strong preference for details (still, it stands in a stark contrast to the practice of the Nouveaux Romanciers of the 20th century). Savitzkaya asserts himself with the aid of conciseness, draws to a large extent upon surprising stylistic devices, juggles with words, even if paying careful attention to their precision. Finally, he acts as a genuine poet, reviving fragrances and colors of childhood. All in all, the whole of his work is designed to bring his readers to take pleasure in living.

Resisting the world. Historical declinations of contemporary identity in some Véronique Bergen's novels

Véronique Bergen
Fictional autobiographies of a Belgian writer, Véronique Bergen, describing fates of outstanding characters albeit marginalised by history (Kaspar Hauser, Ludwig II of Bavaria, Ulrike Meinhof), may be interpreted as a metaphor of a contemporary man’s fate, a man caught, often against his will, in a course of political or social events. The characters described here adopt an active resistance stand against life, the stand defi ned by Bergen in her essay Résistances philosophiques, and manifested by striving to create one’s own, coherent world and a new language. In her reference to G. Deleuze, the author states that the said resistance is not only an act of existence but, also, an act of creation while creation of a new language involves, mainly, building of one’s own “I’. Identity of an individual is entangled within identity of a creator while reflection on language – with reflection on artistic medium.

Royal mountains' enigma: David Toscana's narrative contribution
El enigma de las montañas reales: propuesta narrativa de David Toscana

Los puentes de Königsberg
David Toscana
novel structure
Monterrey
Königsberg
narrative of Northern Mexico
The objective of this paper is to reflect on some features of David Toscana’s novel Los puentes de Königsberg. In this contribution by the Northern Mexican writer there are unusual parallelisms between different realities of the cities of Monterrey (Mexico) and Königsberg (East Prussia), which become the basis of the structure of the novel. In this framework the author situates certain eccentric characters, providing them with a “double life”, a real Mexican one and an imaginary East-Prussian one, in order to contrast the cities and validate the superiority of Königsberg, the actual protagonist of the novel. Toscana uses selected criteria, such as scientific and cultural contributions by the cities, their different historical fates, and the moral attitudes of their inhabitants towards discrimination, war crimes and gender violence, which implies a severe critique of Monterrey’s society. The set of parallelisms between the cities is totally convincing as a fictional structure and emphasizes the most prominent quality of Toscana’s analysed prose.

The paper aims to present pulp as one of the main genres of contemporary Italian literature. This extreme kind of noir was born in the 1990s and immediately gained popularity among readers and caused controversy amid critics: from high and flattering opinions to complete rejection. The author examines the origin of the genre and the story of its development in Italy. She also describes the distinctive qualities of this kind of literature such as dark topics, eclectic form and mixture of languages. In addition, the paper shows various visions of pulp represented by different groups of authors: a serious and uncompromising or a light and amusing way of depicting the violence, inherited from Quentin Tarantino.

The gift in the poetry of Eugenio Montale
La questione del dono nella poesia di Eugenio Montale
Malicka, Paulina
Montale's poetry
The purpose of this article is to present a new interpretation of Eugenio Montale’s early poems from the perspective of the gift theory which, ever since the publication of Bronisław Malinowski’s Argonauts of the Western Pacific and Marcel Mauss’s anthropological study Essai sur le don, has become one of the most fruitful interdisciplinary conversations among anthropologists, philosophers, scholars and economists. The paper is focused on the genesis of gift in Montale which coincides, in a certain way, with Heidegger’s concept of Dasein thrown into the world which has alredy been given to it. The analysis of different passages from Mediterraneo session will then appear as a new interpretative horizon of Montale’s poetry governed by the immense power of gift that interacts within the triadic relation: refuse – receive – repay.

The aim of this paper is to introduce a new approach in translation studies which is an intercultural translation. Based on the methodology of postcolonial theory, the manipulation school and polysystem theory, it allows for an analysis of texts originally written in the language of the target culture. Application of this new framework is exemplified by diaries and letters of a Polish writer, Andrzej Bobkowski.

During the last Baìo in 2007, I interpreted carnival as an occasion to investigate popular traditions. Agricultural feasts have been present since ancient times, sometimes hidden behind the veil of other meanings: today they represent a way to allow the present society to feel itself as a continuation of the past. The communities of small local areas show a representation of their identity through ancient rituals – like manifestations, such as the Baìo – to sew their relationships with the modern territory. Those rituals also demonstrate several, and sometimes unexpected, connections with different cultures of the present and the past.

superimposed reality
The purpose of this paper is to critically review some of the main theoretical tenets in Ezequiel Martínez Estrada’s pessimistic stance about the Argentinean history and society of his time. Focusing on his critical remarks about the so-called «literatura o poesía gauchesca» as well as on his enthusiastic assessment of José Hernández’ Martín Fierro, the achievements and missing points in Martínez Estrada’s skeptical diagnosis will be underlined and put in broader philosophical context. For the Argentinean writer the controversial notion of a “superimposed reality” – as he infers its existence from the Martín Fierro – captures a kind of ambivalent metaphysical concurrence among the literary creation, the geographical setting and the sociopolitical state of the country.

Dealing with discourses produced in Contemporary Popular Music, it is usual in contemporary youth’s imaginary to find rock considered as metonymic with authenticity, remaining as a movement an outstanding extension of Romanticism. Then, when drawing out its motifs from Satanism, successful rock lyrics need a rhetorical stylization in order to construct persuading songs beyond traditional morals. The main goal of this article is to analyze and compare this kind of stylization in Rolling Stones’s Sympathy for the Devil and Jesucristo García, written by the Spanish band Extremoduro, taking them both as examples of popularized dramatic monologues that present the topic of attraction of Evil performed by devilish figures.

The article About the Symbiosis of the Space and the body on the example of „Treno di panna” and „Tecniche di seduzione” by Andrea De Carlo is the analysis of space related to physicality in two novels by a contemporary Italian writer. An animate body expressing emotions and succumbing to the influences of the milieu’s moods becomes engaged in bilateral relations with space; the body integrates with it as well as interferes in it, exceeding its own spatial constraints. The article is also a suggestion to read contemporary Italian prose through the prism of the theory of a German neophenomenologist Hermann Schmitz. The most important issues of Schmitz’s theory are presented and illustrated from the literary perspective: the notion of the Lieb i.e. the body which is alive, dynamic and perceives; the notion of feelings seen as atmospheres which are spatial feelings; and the concept of the living space. The analyzed examples illustrate the compatibility of the Italian writer’s literary intuition with the newest philosophical theories.

expressive gestures
The present paper is an attempt supplying proofs that gestural signs are almost like standard linguistic signs. It is claimed that language gestures exhibit numerous properties of classical linguistic signs conceived of as in the works of de Saussure. The dividing line between the two pertains, in essence, to the type of motivation between the signifier and the signified, found within gestural, but not linguistic signs. There is a conspicuous connection between the two aspects of the sign within various kinds of gestures, including volitional ones (most akin to speech acts or „la parole” of the Saussure) as well as within those which are not performed on purpose (called „sylinguistic” gestures).

There is a conspicuous connection between the two aspects of the sign within various kinds of gestures, including volitional ones (most akin to speech acts or „la parole” of the Saussure) as well as within those which are not performed on purpose (called „sylinguistic” gestures).

Applications de la théorie des négociations conversationnelles de Kerbrat-Orecchioni et de la notion de stratégie à l’analyse des messages asynchrones de l’interaction virttuelle
Pirogowska, Ewa
The written interactive register of internet discourse became the generous source for contemporary linguistic studies. This article tries to explain how to fit a modern conversational theory of C. Kerbrat- Orecchioni to the analysis of interaction between humans in the computer asynchronous communication. The conclusions reached at intend to update notions like conversational strategy, conversational negotiation so as to apply them to the new communication means.

Reciprocal transformation. Syntactic varieties
Conversion: non-réciproque – réciproque. Variantes syntaxiques
Nkollo, Mikołaj
reciprocity
reciprocal construction
grammatical vs. lexical exponents
reflexive
symmetric relations
The present paper is devoted to the concept of reciprocity and to reciprocal expressions, which are divided into two main classes. Those belonging to the first of them signify reciprocity on their own, i.e. without any additional reciprocal markers. The other class contains expressions that acquire ability to refer to reciprocal states of affairs only as a result of appropriate transformations. Different reciprocal markers – grammatical, lexical and quantifying – are singled out and thoroughly characterized. Their use results in converting non-reciprocal signs into reciprocal ones. They are applied according to the part of speech of a modified term. The conclusion to be drawn from this analysis revolves around the discrepancy between morphological and syntactic means of reciprocal transformation. While the former ones are rather scanty, the latter are largely used in contemporary French.

Impersonal forms of verb in medieval Spanish
Formas no personales del verbo en el español medieval
Pawlik, Janusz
verbal morphology
infinitives & participles
Old Spanish
In this paper we intend to investigate the three elements of the Spanish verb system, ie. infinitive (cantar), present and past participles (cantando, cantado). We will find out the changes undergone by these grammatical forms and their function during medieval Spanish. This period is considered to be crucial for the formation and the future role played by the impersonal forms of verb.

verbal aggression
An insult is one of the cases of verbal aggression and undoubtedly it is an everyday life phenomenon. Insulting is a display of direct aggression which arises from anger and aims at the effect on the recipient’s mind. The act of abuse on the other hand, is conditioned by multiple factors. Its success depends, for example, on the knowledge of culture to which the recipient of an insult belongs. Despite the fact that an insult is a cultural phenomenon, i.e. dependent on a particular culture, the mechanism of abuse itself is identical in the entire world. Generally, it is possible to determine a list of universal human disabilities which are subject to insults as well as a universal list of topic areas of insulting expressions.

The paper deals with the syntactic features of textual connectives in the contemporary French and Czech language. The study is a comparative one. The argumentative connectives are lexical units that participate on the text structuration and mark the argumentative orientation of the constituents they connect. Being defined on the basis of textual criteria, the units we include to the category issue from different morphosyntactic classes – conjunctions of subordination, conjunctions of coordination, adverbials. Although these classes present in French and in Czech some different distributional features, their accumulation in one clause is ruled by the same principles that operate on the level of the logical form.

The figures of construction in the persuasive texts on the example of singles advertisements
Les figures de construction dans les textes persuasifs d’après l’exemple des annonces matrimoniales
Otulak-Komenda, Monika
A sender of a personal ad, who usually does not have any theoretical knowledge of rhetoric, intuitively uses simple schemes in the text which are based on the syntactic modifications of zero level. The schemes, which are discussed in this article, do not introduce any changes on the semantic level, as a result, they do not cause ambiguity and they do not make the text’s reception more difficult. On the one hand, making such schemes is easy, by and large, it does not demand the knowledge of theoretical basis of rhetoric. On the other hand, the schemes have an influence on rhythmicality and dynamic of the text. Consequently, they make the reception of the text easier and, in addition, the text becomes more attractive for a virtual recipient.

Types of semantic operations in the interpretation of paradoxical statements
Types d’opérations sémantiques dans l’interprétation des énoncés paradoxaux
Wołowska, Katarzyna
The paper describes the linguistic paradox from a semantic point of view, in particular the mechanisms involved in paradox neutralization in a context. The theoretical and methodological perspective of the study, linked to the current stemming from French structural semantics, lays a particular emphasis on mutual relations between the analyzed elements, though considered in a micro- and macrosemantic context. Special attention is paid to basic types of paradox neutralization: semantic dissimulation (as to time, optics and point of view) and semantic assimilation, as well as tropical interpretation of a string, more exactly – metaphoric, hyperbolic and ironical.

On the search for oneself in a few novels of Jean-Philippe Toussaint
À propos du difficile chemin vers soi-même dans quelques romans de Jean-Philippe Toussaint
Zbierska-Mościcka, Judyta
Referring to anthropological reflections of Marc Augé and his proposed notions of supermodernity and non-places, the article discusses the identity of a contemporary man presented by examples of key novels by a Belgian writer, Jean-Philippe Toussaint (La Salle de bain, Monsieur, L’appareil-photo, La réticence, La télévision, Fuir, La vérité sur Marie). Toussaint’s characters are actually in a struggle against problems defined by Augé: lack of one’s own place, time for reflection and, mainly, a need for another human being.

"Obedience to one's husband is a wife's first duty": the subject of marriage in the writings of Princess Franciszka Urszula Radziwiłł
« Aux ordres de l’époux obéir, c’est le droit essentiel des épouses » : le mariage dans les écrits de la princesse Franciszka Urszula Radziwiłł (1705-1753)
Judkowiak, Barbara
This article deals with the issue of love, marriage and motherhood, which dominates the work of the first Polish female writer to be at once both a poetess and a dramatist. It offers a reconstruction of the biographical context that strongly influences many of Radziwiłłowa’s utterances on this subject and sheds light on more general matters, such as the juridical and social situation of women in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

"It is treachery to marry without espousing" - Montaigne and his concept of marriage
« C’est trahison de se marier sans s’espouser » – Montaigne et sa conception du mariage
Szeliga, Dorota
This article is an attempt to look into an issue, many times undertaken by critics, of Montaigne’s attitude towards marriage. Major reflections on the subject are described by the author of the Essays in the chapter « Upon some verses of Virgil » (III, 5). However, comments scattered around other places, often contradictory in their nature, create a picture full of ambiguities.

From architectural to literary symbolism: Proust in the school of Émile Mâle
Du symbolisme architectural au symbolisme littéraire : Proust à l’école d’Emile Mâle
Fraisse, Luc
Marcel Proust (1871-1922) debuted as a writer when the doctrine of symbolism was prevalent in the French literature. But his relationship with this contemporary trend is difficult to define. The reconstruction of historical and logical facts connected with this issue seems to indicate that Proust distanced himself from the poets and writers of symbolism; the word “symbol” itself would often be used in negative contexts in "In Search of Lost Time" which Proust started to write in 1908. At that time Proust was also impressed by the work of Émile Mâle entitled "L’Art religieux du XIIIe siècle en France" (Religious Art of the 13th century in France, 1898). Thus, it is through the contact with architecture, more than with literature, that the author of "In Search of Lost Time" explores the notion of symbolism when, based on consciously adopted rules, he gives his work the exact structure of a cathedral.

Between legal roots and literary tradition: La Pupille of Fagan and the tutors in Molière's plays
Entre ancrage juridique et tradition littéraire : « La Pupille » de Fagan et les tuteurs de Molière
Vickermann-Ribémont, Gabriele
The best-known comedy written by Eighteenth-century minor dramatic author Fagan, The Pupille (1734), is to be understood against the background of the matrimonial law of the French Ancien Regime. The royal law article called « rapt de séduction », which inspired much of the contemporary literary production, gives full authority to parents or guardians, as opposed to the Catholic doctrine privileging free consent of parties. La Pupille plays a particular role in this context because the comedy does not ridicule either parents or guardians, and works out a marriage against their will; on the contrary, Fagan’s guardian is most comprehensive and will therefore prepare the final surprise.

The Juridical Humanism of Louis Le Caron according to his Commentary on the Second Marriage Law (1560)
L’humanisme juridique de Louis Le Caron d’après son « Commentaire sur l’edict des secondes nopces » (1560)
Lombart, Nicolas
The aim of this paper is to show the deep relationship between the second marriage as a juridical and political problem in France in 1560 and the critical method of the « juridical humanism » used by Le Caron, based on the desacralization of the Roman law (by using philosophical and historical references) and the glorification of the French language and civilization. In that extent, the Commentaire sur l’edict des secondes nopces (1560) may be seen as an exercise of « illustration » of the French juridical language (refering to the literary context of the marriage) and praise of the king of France (paterfamilias and lawgiver).

The image of Japan in Ni d’Ève, ni d’Adam of Amélie Nothomb. Critical essay
L’image du Japon dans « Ni d’Ève, ni d’Adam » d’Amélie Nothomb. Essai critique
Kowalski, Witold
The goal of this paper is to present the place of Japan in "Ni d’Ève, ni d’Adam" of Amélie Nothomb. The paper is focused on the experiences and observations of Nothomb about Japanese mentality, civilisation, culture and the clash of cultures which writer lived through during her stay in Japan. The analysis of her images of this Eastern country leads to show an ambiguous and subjective portrait of Japan, sometimes surprisingly stereotypical, where the admiration for Japan turns easily into a disappointment and the incomprehension of Japanese principles and mentality.

Three times a month? Ten times a day? Montaigne and marriage regulations in "Upon some verses of Virgil"
Trois fois par mois ? dix fois par jour ? Montaigne et la réglementation du mariage dans « Sur des vers de Virgile » (Essais, III, 5)
Bjaï, Dennis
In his chapter “Upon some lines of Virgil” (Essays, III, 5), Montaigne relates the complaint of a poor Catalonian woman, to whom her husband fulfilled his conjugal duties at least ten times a day, and the arbitration the Queen of Aragon gave in her favour (?). This spicy story actually raises a tricky point of law, that Nicolas Bohier (Decisiones Aureæ, 1544), Antoine du Verdier (Les diverses leçons, 1577) and Guillaume Bouchet (Les Serées, 1584) had previously studied. After Montaigne, the case will be dealt with again in the works of Cholières and Brantôme.

The fifteenth century "idyllic romance" and matrimonial law - Paris et Vienne of Pierre de La Cépède
Un « roman idyllique » du XVe siècle et le droit matrimonial : « Paris et Vienne » de Pierre de La Cépède
Ribémont, Bernard
Since the pioneering work of Myrrha Lot-Borodine identifying a particular form of the novel, with Floire et Blanchefl or as a founding text where a much more central role is given to women. I would like here to analyze Paris et Vienne, a text that critics had little studied, from the perspective of family law and matrimonial issues such that can be analyzed through the fiction that proposes to 1432, Pierre La Cépède. I will work on the short version, because condensed, only shows that the more deep springs of the text.

At the confines of true and fictitious: the fabled over the historical
Aux confins du fantastique et du réel, le légendaire plus que l’historique
Quaghbeur, Marc
fr
Taking as its starting point two crucial moments of the Belgian history – the events that took place in 16th (the reign of Charles V and afterwards) and in 19th centuries (from the Battle of Waterloo until the Belgian Revolution in 1830) – the paper demonstrates how non-French literature written in French was born in a country where this language actually came into being, but which, nevertheless, never came as far as to acquire the status of a nation state. Belgian literature in French never became able to convey either the History, or its relationship to the world or its identity in accordance with French interpretative models and French narrative standards. The paper sheds a light on how, in 19th and 20th centuries, European historical events – esp. the two wars – affected slight details of the initial pattern, but failed to contest successfully both the reluctance to see the History as a device to grasp the Sense and the preference for privileging the fabled, the legendary and the fictitious at the expense of factual realism.

This paper proposes the reading of Ruxandra Ceseranu’s novel Un singur cer deasupra lor as a modern apocrypha presenting a historiosophic vision of Romania’s fate in the second half of the 20th century with the use of apocalyptic themes and symbolic imagery. The analysis consists of tracing references to the Book of Revelation which is a key element to the interpretation of the novel, and to other biblical books and themes. The analysis is supplemented with an attempt at describing the most significant archetypical and cultural symbols, and the remnants of bygone traditions that provide the second reading to those historically-grounded stories. References to folk tales based on Christian imaginary world further strengthen the proposition of the apocryphal nature of the work. The additional argument supporting my thesis is the polyphonic and multilayer structure of the novel that combines subjective visions and mythical interpretations with the factual layer, and the use of palimpsest technique consisting of interweaving texts of other authors into the main narration. The paper does not address the question of the conformity of the literary vision with the source documents and historical prototypes of certain episodes and persons. Those matters were partly commented on by the author in the afterword.

The Uruz's literary case from the perspective of aesthetics of grotesque

the Urmuz’s case
the rhetoric of grotesque
Romanian literature
Romanian authors from early XX-th century
Alfred Jarry
We are trying in the following phenomenological approach to go on with our description concerning the grotesque in Romanian literature. In the first part of our work, we will make a short and diachronic review of the most important writings belonging to Romanian authors from the XIX-th century till the first decade of the XX-th century. It is then when a mysterious and shy Romanian writer, called URMUZ, gave birth to a few but influential literary pages of the absurd and the grotesque. In the second part of our work we will analyze the distinguishing traits of his ten works of prose through the mirror of the grotesque. This ignored Romanian writer was baptized “a new Alfred Jarry”, although he never had heard about this French author and never read about Ubu. The hidden influence of Urmuz unknowingly modernized the concept of literarity.

Some Remarks on Portuguese Possessives
Algumas observações sobre os possessivos em português
Wielgosz, Małgorzata
possessive pronouns possessive adjectives inalienable possession cultural context
possessive pronouns possessive adjectives inalienable possession cultural context
The linguistic description of possessives is controversial. In traditional grammar they are defined as carriers of the meaning of possession or belonging; however, this paper intends to prove that in many cases such a meaning does not appear, and therefore, the possessive semantics of adjectives and pronouns known as possessives is a myth. Moreover, this article’s aim is to show the importance of context in the interpretation of the real meaning of a possessive. in order to confirm these hypotheses, and given the scarcity of works concerning Portuguese possessives, studies on English, Spanish and Polish ones carried out by various authors have been analyzed. What is more, some data from Reference Corpus of Contemporary Portuguese (CRPC) have been examined. First of all, two different classifications of possessives are presented. Then, some cases of possessor deletion are shown, special attention being paid to the forms of expressing inalienable possession. After that, some structural characteristics of possessives are described, as well as their function as determiners. Finally, the paper shows the role that cultural and situational contexts play in the interpretation of the meaning of possessives.

The aim of this paper is to highlight a problematic use of the Portuguese tense Pretérito Perfeito Composto in comparison to the use of English Present Perfect and Spanish Pretérito Perfecto Compuesto. A great number of mistakes in use of this tense is observed in the students’ production in their L3 Portuguese as a result of apparent similarity between the Portuguese and the Spanish tense. The article is expected to present differences in temporal and aspectual approaches of these tenses. The use of Portuguese construction is much more restricted, limited in fact to the imperfect, repeated or prolonged actions that continue in the present. However, the apparent similarities in form provoke the students to transfer the tense constructions from the other languages. We observe the mechanisms of transfer and try to underline the essential differences in usage of these tenses.
However, the apparent similarities in form provoke the students to transfer the tense constructions from the other languages. The present paper depicts alterations undergone by the sleeping king motif (sebastianism) in the writings of Fernando Pessoa. The data to conduct the study were collected in thematic anthologies and several unpublished pieces. The myth of the King Sebastian was given a congregational dimension by Pessoa, thus conveying his cultural and identity project subsumed under the metaphor of the spiritual empire. Pessoa introduces some readjustments in the way the historical king is to be conceived of. In his theory, Sebastian becomes the figure of the individual effort on the way towards the national renewal. The messianic character of D. Sebastião is defeated in this theory despite having been associated with the figures of either Jesus or the Antichrist. The messiah of the Portuguese foundation myth is replaced with the idea of great man and the task to be carried out in this field, included the metaphor of the Fifth Empire, gains a cultural character. That is why Pessoa’s theories must no longer be interpreted in messianic terms. The Pessoa’s transformations of the sebastianism analyzed in this article are the starting point for the new national narration in the poetic cycle of "Mensagem".

The main goal of this paper is to identify various methods of expressing reciprocity encountered in Old Portuguese texts (from 13th to 15th centuries) and to account for putative evolutionary mechanisms conducive to their emergence and their subsequent shape. Most of the grammaticalization pathways documented in human languages have been implemented in Old Portuguese, as well. Only syntactically built reciprocals will be taken into account; their lexical counterparts, where reciprocity is an inherent semantic property, will be evoked incidentally. Peculiar characteristics exhibited by ancient Portuguese reciprocal constructions comprise: a shaky selection of determiners distributed over the bipartite indefinite "um ao outro" and its varieties, a rather peripheral, though clearly distinct exponent "d’huũa parte e d’ooutra" designed to highlight a twofold (and not manifold) internal structure of states of affairs, a remarkable mobility of "se" and, finally, a blurred distinction between "entre eles" (preferably anaphoric) and "entre si" (used seemingly at random, with either indefinite and definite objects). Compared to other incipient Romance languages, a system built around this set of markers was rather scanty. It relied on numerous makeshift solutions, as typically do the languages whose particular grammatical areas are merely on the point of coming into existence.

Towards a syntactic analysis of European Portuguese cognate objects

Distributed Morphology
The present paper aims at discussing selected syntactic aspects of cognate objects in European Portuguese, along the lines of Distributed Morphology (Haugen, 2009). Cognate objects may be readily discovered in numerous human languages, including European Portuguese (Chovia uma chuva miudinha). It is assumed in papers devoted to their English counterparts that they belong to various subclasses. Indeed, some of them are genuine cognates (to sleep a sleep...) or hyponyms (to dance a jig; Hale & Keyser, 2002). It turns out that in European Portuguese, they can be split into four different categories: (i) genuine cognate objects (chorar um choro...), (ii) similar cognate objects (dançar uma dança) (iii) objects hyponyms (dançar um tango) and (iv) prepositional cognate objects (morrer de uma morte ...). There are, then, significant differences between various classes of cognate objects: whereas the genuine ones call imperatively for a restrictive modifier and a definite article, the remaining ones admit it only optionally. It might be concluded, then, that a lexicalist theory set up along the lines of Hale and Keyser is unable to deal successfully with distributional facts proper to various classes of cognate constructions in European Portuguese. That is why the present study is conducted more in accordance with syntactic principles of Distributed Morphology, with a strong impact of hypotheses put forward by Haugen (2009).

The purpose of this article is to analyze the psychological stance of Sarnau, the main character of the novel "Ballad of Love in The Wind" of the Mozambican writer Paulina Chiziane. The writer describes the Mozambique of today, which is divided into tradition and modern life, ancestral and native way of life. The analysis of the novel shows that Paulina Chiziane breaks the stereotyped image of the woman by representing her as a being aware of her inferior social situation and as a being who intends to oppose the sexist and patriarchal society. Sarnau must face up to the cultural clash resulting from the encounter between the Western and African cultures. She lives in a polygamous family and has to find her place within this family and within the society. Chiziane’s protagonist tries to change her situation in order to find her identity as a women, mother and African wife.

The main objective of the article is to analyze the socio-political situation and the other factors determining the development of music types such as Fado and Copla during the dictatorship times in Spain and Portugal. These genres were used for the political and propaganda purposes. Many artists like for example Lola Flores or Amália Rodrigues have become famous exactly during the regime times, however, their real success can be measured with the arrival of democracy. Copla which represents the image of Franco’s Spain has been replaced by some new music genres and it has never been reborn as it had happened in the case of Fado. This Portuguese music genre was a subject of changes starting from 60’s. Significant modifications have been done in both: lyrics and accompaniment; Fado survived the anti-Fado period (1974-1975) and from the 90’s until present experiences an ongoing rebirth. Studies on Fado’s and Copla’s popularity may also prove to be crucial in understanding the phenomenon of transculturalism. All the factors that boosted the process of internationalization of this music in the twenty-first century should become an object of a multifaceted analysis.

The present study aims at analyzing puns from the front page of the newspaper Canard Enchaîné, more precisely the deconstruction of meanings and the reconstruction of new meanings by means of this linguistic process. As it is shown by the specialized literature, the nature of the pun itself actually reveals the lexical or semantic organization of all pre-constructed material. The puns used in our corpus will extend, as we shall see, from polysemy and ambiguity resulting from the multitude of meanings that a word can have, to the construction of portmanteau words: « Pour Standard et Poor’s : Cet accord Mercozy, c’est de la poudre de Berlinpimpin » (Canard enchaîné, 4754), the construction of new words : « Après l’annonce surprise du référendum le choeur des 26 européens : On s’est fait Papandréouter » (Canard enchaîné, 4749), to finally arrive at the use of defrosted structures, as in the example: « Sommet à Bruxelles pour sauver la Grèce et l’euro. L’Europe peine à reprendre du poil de la dette » (Canard enchaîné, 4734).

Being a text of profound personal introspection, the Leal Conselheiro was born to give voice to King Duarte´s meditations on the real problems of human life and Portuguese people. His message was one of social projection and had a pedagogical purpose of national dimension, though it meant to cause an effect on the Portuguese moral and cultural identity that he wished to see guided by timeless principles of Christian nature. Created in the Middles Ages, the book will also be a testimony of change and innovation in place, especially because this is a moment of linguistic transition and emancipation in which new and old forms need to coexist. In this essay we will be particularly focused on the verbs ser, estar, haver and ter, observing their semantics and syntactic proximity, achieving a study that involves the intrinsic relation between ser / estar and haver / ter. We’ll analyse their evolution in order to explore common traces and meanings, but also the contexts that mark their individuality. Finally, we shall move towards the research provided by our corpus aiming at its quantitative and statistic treatment. We’ll define the behavioural traces that involve the variables studied and we’ll support the results on a specific group of syntactic and semantic criteria. Conclusively, according to the results, we’ll point to the years between 1428 and 1430 to mark the birth of the manuscript. Placed on the beginning of the middle archaic period, the text reveals mostly cases of variation of forms, not necessarily the total consummation of change.

Portugal has been always on the periphery of the main history, also the literary history, so that in order to go out of the localism of the poetry, F. Pessoa created a group of poets whose purpose was to create a modern Portuguese poetry. José Saramago, going in the same direction dozens of years later, seems to have been a slave of the concept of portugality created by F. Pessoa. Both authors are interconnected in a surprising way, as if one could not exist without the other. Saramago’s novels are influenced by Pessoa’s literary creation, like a great part of the contemporary Portuguese literature, both poetry and prose. The paper depicts the influence of F. Pessoa on J. Saramago and discusses the phenomenon of portugality and the role of Pessoa in its formation.

The key issue of the analysis, concentrated on the dystopia by Juan Goytisolo, Makbara, is the condition of human sexual body which, in terms proposed by Baudrillard, can be qualified as post-orgiastic. While an asexual, aseptic social system is created in the modern, civilized Europe, Morocco seems to be the last refuge not only for the marginalized sexuality, but also for the romantic dreams about marriage. Nonetheless, the Moroccan promise of authentic eroticism acquires a necrophilic flavour of “love at the cemetery”. In the conclusion, Goytisolo is shown as the advocate of a dying, spectral culture, victim of unceasing, manifold exploitation and unable to counterbalance the European symbolic and economic predominance in the Mediterranean.

In the article we study two visions of the city. A “classical” and allegorical one is included in Christine de Pizan’s well-known oeuvre, Le Livre de la Cité des Dames (1404/1405). We compare it to a biographically conditioned construction from the essays "Digues que m’estimes encara que sigui mentida" (1991) by the Catalan writer Montserrat Roig. The key factor in our analysis is the chronotope structure and the relationship between the image of the city and the writing act. We note a number of similarities between the two visions, some of them stemming from the identity and the social and cultural situation of the feminine subject, but also point out some differences, as those determined by the historical context of both texts and their literary genres.

The essay, dedicated to Darío Villanueva, one of the most important Spanish specialists in literary theory and comparative literature of the 20th century, explores in the first part his contribution to the research on metaliterature and metafiction in the Spanish contemporary novel of the decades of 1980-1990. His works establish the relationships of these concepts with postmodernity theories and with umberto Eco’s thesis in Il nome della rosa, Postille and other relevant essays of the Italian author. In the second part of the text, the aim is to apply these concepts of literary self-consciousness and reflexivity in the novel as a story-telling device in the work of one of the most relevant Spanish young writers of the 21st Century, Agustín Fernandez Mallo’s Nocilla Lab. In this sense, we will focus the ending sequence, written (and designed) in form of a comic book or graphic novel, in which the young author puts himself beside the more recognized Enrique Vila-Matas, as an allegoric and fictional reflection of Pierre Bourdieu’s theories about the literary field.

The exchange of ideas and cultural influences between postcolonial countries of both Americas and the mother countries, has never been limited to one-sided imitation of European patterns. Since the 21th century or even since the colonial period, European theories rooted locally giving original fruits (i.e. magical realism, the Latin American version of world’s primitivisme from the first half of the 20th century). Within the broadly defined transatlantic studies, the particular aim of this paper is to explore motives related to fascism and nazism present in the modern Spanish American prose (Roberto Bolaño, Ignacio Padilla, Jorge Volpi). Firstly, I draw the cultural context in which racist and esoteric ideas of renewing the world infiltrated to Latin America. In the second part I analyse ways to adapt fascist plots in modern novels. Among them the predominating tendencies are to parody the totalitarian ideas or to see them as an incarnation of the intangible evil.

The poetry of Joan Brossa (1919-1998), because of its complexity and size, testifies the adventures that has lived the Western literature in the second half of the twentieth century: from the depletion of traditional avant-gardes, going through the movements of neo- or transavantgarde, up to the manifestos of the “literature of exhaustion” or postmodern. The present study aims to discuss the collection of seven volumes of poetry of Joan Brossa, written between 1969 and 1975, and published between 1983 and 1989 under the general title "Els entra-i-surts del poeta", which we consider as one of the most consistent editorial and lyrical author’s projects. We put emphasis on the issue of continuation / break up between the modernist concepts of language and the postmodern plurality, treatment of reality as text or writing, free play of imagination: all this not as a picture of disintegrated world but as positive refl ection of a polymorphic reality.

In two novels based on the subject of war: Soldados de Salamina (“Soldiers of Salamis”) (2001) and Velocidad de la luz (“the Speed of Light”) (2005), Javier Cercas raises the problem of recuperation of a traumatic past through literary discourse. The questions which these novels discuss and which we want to examine here concern complex relations between fiction and reality, history and memory (individual and collective), guilt and responsibility. In order to confront the historical reality from the contemporary perspective, from postmemory, Javier Cercas proposes a narrative with a clear metafictional dimension creating interferences in distinct narrative levels.

Adopting as main conceptual framework the proposals of the important thinker and poet from Martinica, Édouard Glissant (1928-2011), about a “poetics of relation”, the article considers the way in which a significant part of the contemporary Spanish speaking literary creation — precisely in virtue of its hybrid or mixed cultural nature — is a good example of the fertility of Glissant’s “poetics of relation” — in which other key concepts of Glissant’s theoretical point of view, like the “archipelagic thought” and the “Whole-World”, are included. Thus, the convergence between certain theoretical perspectives rooted in the francophone Caribbean context and similar intuitions literary developed in the Hispanic American region is highlighted.

Tzvetan Todorov typified the literary fantastic as an autonomous gender in 1970, separating it from marvelous texts and other bordering modes that contained unreal or supernatural elements. In the Latin-American Hispanic studies his model and several other views about fantastic literature encouraged an advancing body of important theorizing, more or less critical with his definition of the gender, finding or not correlations with French or Anglo-Saxon alternative approaches to Todorov’s taxonomist view. In Spain a consistent incorporation to the debate occurred much later thanks to Catalan researcher David Roas. In the present article it is presented a brief state of the investigation about the literary fantastic through the last 20 years in Hispanic studies, when the first reactions to structuralist visions of the subject were enriched by sociocritical, historic, psychologist and philological contributions. two particular, solid but conflicting approaches are analyzed as the opposed poles of a quite wide spectrum of different understandings and ways of doing literary fantastic: on one hand, Mexican scholar Ana María Morales philologist and intratextual-based view, and, on the other hand, Roas psychologist and actual-reader-response-based position. This accurately examined presentation shows the complex variety and the enormous interest of Hispanic studies theorizing about fantasy worlds.

The present paper aims at analysing the trajectories of the Romanian intellectuals immediately after the Revolution in 1989, and the fall of Communism. During the Communist years, the term itself (intellectual) had been used with ideological connotations. The intellectual (as a social value) was discussed according to the Marxist ideology, taking into consideration his concrete usefulness and his contribution to the Communist society. Immediately after 1989, the fundamental dilemma faced by the Romanian intellectual represents the necessity of the implication of the intellectuals inside the society or, on the contrary, the isolation in an Ivory Tower of creation. The second challenge aimed at the necessity of synchronizing the Romanian elite with the European one; the topics for debate in Western and Eastern Europe during the Cold War were fundamentally different. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the influence and the commitment of the Romanian intellectuals in reshaping the Post-Communist Romanian society.

The study discusses general rules of transforming Pierre Corneille’s texts in the transposition process, so as to fit the linguistic and cultural context of Polish classicism. The analysis concerns translations and adaptations following the first reception period of Corneille’s works in seventeenth-century Poland. These include: “Otto” by Stanisław Konarski, “Herakliusz” by Tomasz Aleksandrowicz from the years 1744-1749 (the second Polish reception period of Corneille’s works), “Cynna” by Franciszek Godlewski, as well as “Cynna” and “Horacjusze” by Ludwik Osiński from the years 1802-1808 (the third reception period). In the 18th century, the strategy of emphasizing didactic elements of texts is dominant. In 19th century, the authors strengthen suspense and the element of surprise; Aleksandrowicz uses prose and Osiński simplifies classical rhetoric. All of the translators share the ambition of enriching the Polish language and creating the tragic canon.

This article offers a reading of two volumes of short stories, 'Geotenn ar Werhez' by Breton author Jakez Rioù (1899-1937) and 'L’horizon bleu de la mort' by the Romanian Marin Preda. Both works describe traditional agrarian societies, one in western the other in eastern Europe, in the early to mid-twentieth century. We examine here attitudes to death and manifestations of death in Rioù’s and Preda’s writing. The thrust of the article is to suggest that these works provide rare insights into rural life in Europe before the advent of mechanisation. This leads us to consider litterature in the Celtic languages, Breton in this instance, and Romanian, as a primary sources for evidence of aspects of European culture little documented in the metropolitan traditions of other languages. Rioù’s text is translated by Youenn Drezen, Preda’s by Micaela Slăvescu.

The purpose of the present article is to discuss two literary motifs that can be traced throughout Anton Holban’s prose works: music and the sea. Holban, who wrote also music reviews for newspapers, had a genuine passion for music, which is reflected in his novels and short stories. Music appears in Holban’s literature as the highest form of artistic expression, and, at the same time, as a special and unique code used by lovers to communicate with each other, which isolates them from other people. Music seems to be more important than a relationship with a woman and even than literary creation. It may become an obsession. Listening to music in solitude gives the narrator an opportunity to explore his inner world and to be himself. The sea means much more than a landscape in Holban’s works. Like music, it has a symbolic dimension, being for the protagonists a source of extatic, almost mistic experience, as well as a witness to their deepest and most intimate feelings. From philosophical point of view, the sea means infinity, eternal movement and perfection.

The paper aims to offer a synthetic perspective upon the dramatic genre in the Romanian folklore. We present several preliminary elements within a short historical account of the dramatic manifestations; afterwards we create an inventory of the forms of theatrical arts, following the first historical records, a description of the rituals and props in order to depict the folk syncretism and all its beauty. The working instruments are those offered by historiography and the methodology in the field as well as the ethnographic description. Although less consistent than the folk poetry or epic, folk theatre contributes to the complexity and flavour of Romanian folklore. The unseen mechanisms of syncretism have functioned and are still functioning, generating new forms of folk art. The laic and the religious, the traditional and the modern, the epic and the drama, the masks, the dances as well as the costumes and the props – all these contribute to the survival of this particular folk genre. Moreover, being the least discreet of all Romanian folk genres, the folk theatre represents also an element of attraction and cultural export nowadays.

The aim of this study is to investigate the types of discourse, ideologies, values and models codified in Tusquet’s novels with respect to love and identity related narratives. In order to achieve our goal, we will apply the sociocritical theory regarding transition as well as love related theoretical patterns coined in sociology and psychology. The following questions shall be taken into consideration: which love and identity concepts are being depicted in the novels?, how do the love and identity discourses interact among themselves? Which types of discourse and which cultural models seem to be dominant in Tusquets’ narrative? and to what extent could the analyzed texts be seen as the inscription of an unaccomplished transition?

This paper focuses on the seldom studied poetry of Roberto Bolaño, using "La Universidad Desconocida", the exhaustive compilation published posthumously in 2007. Although Bolaño received wide recognition and many awards for his novels, he defined himself as a poet. In his poetry, we find the same topics and tendencies that he developed in the characters and plots of his narratives. A prime example is "Los detectives salvajes", a novel about a group of young rebel poets in the Mexico of the seventies. Bolaño’s poet characters, as well as his travels, exiles and criticisms of the literary establishment, take on a new light when compared alongside his poetry. this article explores the modes of poetic production as understood by Bolaño, as a way of life outside universities, the literary canon, and any other institutional networks. Instead, his poetic production is marked by the figure of Arthur Rimbaud as the archetype of the cursed poet.

The teaching profession, including the language teaching profession, requires that teachers should constantly enhance their professional competences. Among those competences, the creative ones occupy a fixed position. In this paper, I am going to consider the possibility of optimizing their development by the use of coaching. In spite of controversies aroused by this work method, it can offer a signifi cant support in developing the creative competences of French language teachers.

To develop communicative competence in L2 does the learner need to have the knowledge of linguistic resources, but also of other factors shaping the situational context in which the act of communication is taking place. The elements bearing directly on effi ciency on information exchange comprise all kinds of noises and sound images which make up a signifi cant part of the broadly conceived communicative context. The present paper aims to raise the question of how the use of sound images in the process of foreign language learning/teaching should be made. Among other issues, it addresses the usefulness of various sounds and noises in stimulating learners’ imagination, creativity and skills, as well as in enhancing spoken output in L2.

French as a Foreign Language
Even if language teachers regularly rely on audio-visual resources, fi lm making and editing is still considered as an avant-garde teaching approach. Its potential lies in the fact that it allows the role of the student to shift from refl ective viewer to knowledgeable content producer. In this article, we will present the results of a research conducted among 36 learners of French attending the same secondary school. The study had three major goals. Primarily, it was to indicate students’ general perception of video-editing activities, i.e. to determine whether learners really consider this type of tasks as interesting and profi table. The second aim of the research was to fi nd out whether opinions of people coming across this kind of tasks for the fi rst time would be divergent with the statements made by those who benefi t from it regularly during foreign language classes. Finally, another important goal of the research was to indicate whether variables such as gender, length of foreign language instruction, profile, as well as pupils’ general views on the nature of second language learning and the self-perception of their language abilities can have an impact on their video-editing activities perception.

French for academic purpose is a recent development of French for specific purposes. This new branch of didactics aims to facilitate studies of non-native speakers at French or French speaking universities. Its concern is also to analyze the needs and diffi culties of foreign students so that a tailored course enabling them to follow any course in their fi eld of study could be worked up. The purpose of this article is to see if such an approach can be applied into a department of French where French language is at the same time aim, content and means of study. It will be briefl y explained what French for academic purpose is all about. We will then outline the diffi culties experienced by our students when writing their BA and MA theses. Finally we will take into account the practical aspects and difficulties of such an approach.

The present paper aims to show that the linguistic characterization of various phenomena designed to be taught in French – foreign language (FLE) is likely to be innovative in that it approaches these phenomena in a more principled and coherent way. First, it is demonstrated that the teaching of a spoken language is largely practised in terms of a particular mode of speech production, inspired by the acquisitional theory of rewording (Fr. théorie acquisitionnelle de la reformulation). The illustration of how defi nite vs. indefinite articles are taught draws on principles advocated by enactive linguistics (Fr. linguistique enactive). Finally, the teaching of argumentative features of the economic LSP can be ultimately traced back to the argumentative theories of language
