Martinelli, Dario, prof. dr., musicologist and semiotician, is Director of the International Semiotics Institute, Professor at Kaunas University of Technology, and is also affiliated to the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (visiting professor), the University of Helsinki and the University of Lapland (adjunct professor in both cases). He graduated at Bologna University in 1999, under the supervision of Prof. Gino Stefani, and earned his Ph.D. at Helsinki University in 2002, under the supervision of Prof. Eero Tarasti. He published 6 monographs, 6 edited collections, 2 guest-edited journal issues, 4 entries in scientific encyclopaedias, 6 journal issues as editor-in-chief and about a hundred of scientific articles in refereed journals and collections. His academic interests include Musicology, Popular music studies, Film studies, Semiotics, Animal studies, and he is currently developing a new research path called “Numanities”, devoted to the rethinking of the role and paradigm of humanities in nowadays society. In 2006, he was knighted by the Italian Republic for his contribution to Italian culture.
