Among them were numerous items of jewellery. It seems that their use was related to an extended social hierarchy and distant inter-regional trade contacts. The raw material used by the jewellers was most probably obtained from melted Roman coins. Amber exports were at the economic basis of obtaining the coins. The most frequent forms of trinkets:
snake- and adder-inspired bracelets, reverse pear pendants, S-shaped buckles and others, are of entirely foreign origin. Their prototypes can be traced back to the pre-Roman areas along the Danube occupied by the Thracians and the Dacians or the La Tène culture population.
Tomasz Gralak Prawa autorskie (c) 2022 TOMASZ GRAlAK 2022-10-28 2022-10-28 63 7 40 10.14746/sa.2022.63.1 Pochodzenie Słowian w świetle analiz genetycznych i genomicznych. podstawowe informacje o metodach i przegląd dotychczasowych wyników badań – z punktu widzenia archeologa
Bearing in mind the interdisciplinary nature of the origin of Slavs, in the process of reviewing the issue in relation with archaeology, the debate and the results of research carried out by representatives of other areas of science must be taken into consideration. The goal of this article is a review of the published results of an analysis of fossil and contemporary genetic material, coupled with discussing interpretation thereof in relation with the issue at hand. The work presents a selection of surveys which, according to the author, provide representatives of humanities with insight into the latest state of research. The presentation is preceded by introductory information about the examined material and the analysis methods as well as the conditioning factors. A methodological challenge was faced in the form of connecting data provided by geneticists and the findings from other disciplines, including archaeology, as indicated in the final part of the article.
Sylwia Jędrzejewska Prawa autorskie (c) 2022 SYLWIA JĘDRZEJEWSKA 2022-10-28 2022-10-28 63 41 64 10.14746/sa.2022.63.2 Archaeology, mainly polish, in the current discussion on the ethnogenesis of the Slavs
This paper is an attempt at outlining the current state of discussion about the ethnogenesis of the Slavs, mainly within the framework of Polish scientific research, with particular consideration of archaeological theories, both in terms of their differences as well as any similarities. The discussion covers the allochthonic theory (which is predominant in the science), autochthonic theory, as well as the concept defined by an American archaeologist, Florin Curta, which falls outside these two main discourses.
The rationale proposed within this paper could support the resumption of a harmonious discussion among the archaeologists on the problem of the ethnogenesis of the Slavs.
Michał Kara Prawa autorskie (c) 2022 MICHAł KARA 2022-10-28 2022-10-28 63 65 128 10.14746/sa.2022.63.3 Migracje ludności morawskiej w kierunku północnym u schyłku IX i w X wieku i ich kulturowe konsekwencje
Migrations are an intangible phenomenon in archaeological research. However, relocations of larger groups of people may be of key significance to the development of older communities. The article is an attempt to indicate the elements of material culture that may be related to the relocation of people from various parts of Great Moravia to Bohemia, Poland and perhaps also Rus’. Possible similarities and differences will be indicated between the specific regions, accompanied by considerations of the way in which these migrations could have changed the cultural picture of the area in the 10th century.
Aleksandra Pankiewicz Prawa autorskie (c) 2022 AlEKSANDRA PANKIEWICZ 2022-10-28 2022-10-28 63 129 153 10.14746/sa.2022.63.4 "Dom zmarłych” z Chodlika, gm. The pit contained layer burials of five individuals. The bone material included also horse remains. Other archaeological material contained fragments of clay utensils as well as pieces of metal and bone artefacts destroyed in fire. On the basis of 3D documentation, at attempt has been made to reconstruct the object by means of digital technology. The Chodlik discovery is a ontribution to the research into the occurrence of the Alt Käbelich type of graves and the concept of the so-called “house of the dead” in the Western Slavic Dominion.
Łukasz Miechowicz Joanna Piątkowska-Małecka Łukasz Maurycy Stanaszek Jakub Stępnik Prawa autorskie (c) 2022 ŁUKASZ MIECHOWICZ, JOANNA PIĄTKOWSKA-MAŁECKA, ŁUKASZ MAURYCY STANASZEK, JAKUB STĘPNIK 2022-10-28 2022-10-28 63 153 178 10.14746/sa.2022.63.5 Příklady uplatnění nedestruktivních geofyzikálních měření při průzkumech raně středověkých hradišť na území Přemyslovské domény i širších Čech
For several decades, the Institute of Archaeology in Prague has used non-destructive geophysical methods to research fortifications. New cooperation between archaeologists and geophysicist as part of a Czech-Polish project resulted in a more systematic and targeted survey of early medieval fortifications. The results of this cooperation were presented at a workshop Use of non-destructive and destructive methods in archaeological research of early medieval hillforts, held in Prague in 2019. The main
part of this article contains different examples of geophysical prospecting used in connection with archaeological research into the early medieval fortifications in Bohemia. Selected examples illustrate various conditions, combinations and possibilities of application of non-destructive geophysical methods. In several cases, the results of geophysical measurements can also be supplemented by the results of archaeological research or surveys.
Roman Křivánek Prawa autorskie (c) 2022 ROMAN KřIVáNEK 2022-10-28 2022-10-28 63 179 198 10.14746/sa.2022.63.6 Ołów i władza: plomby Rurykowiczów i Piastów w Europie środkowo-wschodniej
The article considers the economic and political use of small lead seals (tag seals) to validate different kinds of social relations in early medieval Poland and Rus’. Originated in Antiquity, the practice of sealing peaked in Byzantium from where it spread to Early Rus’. This is reflected, for example, in the use in late 11th-late 14th centuries of small lead seals referred to as the “Drohiczyn type”. In this paper I put forward an opinion that not all the early medieval small lead seals should be attributed to “coinless economy”. A study of the corpus of small lead seals from Drohiczyn and Czermno, and finds from Mazovia, has identified a group with iconography identical to the Polish Hohlpfennig, suggesting they were commercial-customs small lead seals used by the Piast dynasty, contemporary with the bracteates introduced in the first half/mid-13th-early 14th centuries. The extraordinary number of small lead seals found in Drohiczyn possibly reflects the outstanding position of the town in the Eastern and Central European relationships as well as a short-term relocation of trade routes leading north, caused by the military conflicts of the 1240-1280s in the upper course of the Western Bug. The practice of sealing could have been introduced by Conrad of Mazovia to Poland from Early Rus’. Subsequently, the small Polish lead seals might have contributed to the emergence of lead cloth seals in Western Europe as part of a cultural transfer.
ALEKSANDR MUSIN Prawa autorskie (c) 2022 ALEKSANDR MUSIN 2022-10-28 2022-10-28 63 199 258 10.14746/sa.2022.63.7 An expedition of Henry II, King of Germany, to the domain of Bolesław I the Brave in 1005 in the light of written sources and historical re-enactment
The article explores an expedition of Henry II, king of Germany, to the domain of Bolesław the Brave in 1005. While the issue has raised considerable interest in academic literature, the analyses have been carried out mainly in the context of major events i.e. the wars of 1002-1005, 1007-1013 and 1015-1018. In this work, an attempt has been made to narrow down the perspective to Henry II’s expedition of 1005 which reached as far as Poznań. To this end, I have analysed the written sources (specifically the records of Thietmar of Merseburg, a German chronicler) in an effort to indicate not only the expedition’s itinerary but also its rate and the state of preparation of the two major parties of the conflict, the German Reich and the Piast dominion. In addition, I have decided to make use of my experience of historical re-enactment in a pioneering way, in order to find out if the rate of the marching maintained by contemporary re-enactors of historical events provides a good comparison background for the rate of Henry II’s expedition of 1005. Next, archaeological sources provided some supplementary information on the conflict of 1005. In the light of all these data I have managed to adopt a different and unique approach to the analysed issue.
Marcin Danielewski Prawa autorskie (c) 2022 MARCIN DANIELEWSKI 2022-10-28 2022-10-28 63 259 276 10.14746/sa.2022.63.8 Funkcja i rola wysp jeziornych wedle przekazów pisanych dotyczących środkowoeuropejskich Słowian i Bałtów we wczesnym średniowieczu
The text revolves around the use of lake isles by Western Slavs and Western Balts in the North European Plain in the early Middle Ages. The main goal of this article is to collect, discuss and analyse early medieval written sources that provide information about the locations’ forms and functions among old communities.
