About the Journal

Focus and Scope

“Theoretical Practice” is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal reaching across the social sciences and humanities (sociology, anthropology, history, philosophy, cultural studies, literature and politics), cultivating diverse critical theories and methodologies. Founded in 2010 in Poland and published quarterly since 2013, “Theoretical Practice” has established itself in the region as one of the most prominent journals in political philosophy and social and critical theory, producing articles, reviews and debate vitally concerned with social and political change.

The journal is dedicated to exploring the critical and explanatory potential of Marxist theory today. The underpinning assumption is that class is an important part, but not the exclusive focus, of Marxism. We are therefore interested in the complex intersection of class with other elements of social realities, as well as in the history of workers’ and popular movements, including minor and marginal histories of popular contention, revolt and resistance. A special focus is put to the theories of the common, the transformations of contemporary capitalism and new forms of exploitation and expropriation.  In correspondence, we are interested in promoting different Marxist approaches to social theory as a crucial role in developing strategies for radical social change.

“Theoretical Practice” is a bi-lingual journal. We publish original articles and reviews in Polish and English, as well as Polish translations from different languages and English translations from Polish. Thus it works as a two way channel to bring regional insights into global circulation and reshuffle local debate by selective infusion of new theoretical inputs. The editors invite submissions of theoretical, empirical and methodological articles and reviews from a wide range of disciplines. Authors from Central and Easter Europe are welcome in particular.

“Theoretical Practice” is an open-access journal offering unlimited Internet access to all of its content. The journal is published independently by the editorial collective under the auspices of the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland. All issues of the journal are thematic, either expressing cutting-edge interests of the editorial collective or fostering guest-edited special issues. Submission focusing on other themes but within the range of the journal’s interests are also welcome to be published in the separate “Varia” part of each issue.

We believe in capacities of collective knowledge production and perform intellectual cooperation in different modes. Scholars are therefore invited to join our theoretical practice by sending drafts, proposals, or any materials which might constitute the basis for further collective knowledge production.

Peer Review Process

Each original article published in the journal undergoes a rigorous peer review process. All submitted articles undergo the same procedure. Submitted papers are initially assessed by the editorial board. The article is read by one or two internal reviewers. If preliminarily accepted, revisions are proposed in collaboration with the author. The main phase of the editorial process takes the form of double blind peer-review. Each article is reviewed by two independent and anonymous reviewers. Reviewers are chosen separately for each article on the basis of their field of study and academic merit. Reviewers are asked to complete a review form  assessing the article against the journal’s criteria for publication. Following the review process, authors receive a review report stating the editorial decision (declined/accepted/conditionally accepted) and an outline of requested amendments and supplements.

The criteria for reviewers while assessing the submission are as follows.

  •  Expertise in existing literature in the respective field;
  •  Contribution of the article to the development of a respective field;
  •  Academic significance of the article;
  •  Appropriateness of theories and methods used in relation to the stated research problem;
  •  Clarity and coherence of argumentation and appropriate style of writing;
  •  Sufficient justification of presented theses and conclusions in respect to existing literature and new research.

If reviews contain further recommendations, authors are asked to resubmit a revised version. Authors are requested to follow editorial instructions closely. Authors should include a letter with their resubmission detailing all revisions with respect to reviewers' comments. If necessary, authors may also justify any other changes and may respond to any other reviewers’ comments.  After the author has resubmitted the revised version it is reviewed by the editorial board and might be put forward for another round of reviews (depending on previous recommendations). Once they have reached the final stage, articles are proofread, accepted by the author and prepared for publication in a forthcoming themed issue of the journal or in a free slot in the non-themed section in a forthcoming issue.

The editorial board seeks to ensure the best possible quality and the reliability of the review process. The journal does not pay reviewers for writing reviews and does not send packages of articles to a single reviewer. In cases of a possible conflict of interest or in the case of previous close cooperation between the author and the reviewer, a new reviewer might be called upon. The editorial board accepts authors' negative recommendations concerning particular reviewers and constantly seeks to broaden its body of reviewers.

Publication Frequency

The journal is published quarterly (at the end of 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th month of the year). Each issue of the journal is dedicated to a specific topic. Therefore, the editorial board publishes open calls for papers on a regular basis to encourage authors from relevant fields to cover certain specific issues. However, we also appreciate articles on topics not directly related to the leading themes indicated in the calls, provided they fit broadly with the journal’s thematic scope. In this case contributions can be submitted without any restrictions, although average publishing times may vary, according to the space in forthcoming issues. Moreover, we strongly encourage reviewing contributors to cover books from the field.

The average external review time is approx. 8 weeks.

Average publication time is 4 to 6 months from submission. There is no online-first mode – DOI signed articles are published with the specific issue of the journal. However, the journal occasionally offers non-quotable early publication of articles on its web site.

Open Access Policy

“Theoretical Practice” is an open-access journal, published under the CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0 license (detail available here: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/). It offers unlimited access to all its content all over the Internet, immediately upon first publication (no embargo period). The journal does not collect any fees from contributors or readers. We encourage authors to include their articles in any open repository, their public academic websites and profiles, without any restrictions. The authors should clearly state the initial place of publication and preferably, include a link to the original article.

Ethics

The editors of Theoretical Practice aim for the highest possible quality of published material and greatest fairness in the publication process. Theoretical Practice introduced an academic quality maintenance procedure as well as preventive measures against academic fraud. The editors strive to maintain the highest standards of communication with authors, reviewers, and readers.

Theoretical Practice applies current criteria and recommendations of the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education concerning academic fairness.

Theoretical Practice acknowledge and accepts the editorial standards recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

This means that the editorial board:

  • strives to meet the needs of readers and authors;
  • strives to constantly improve the journal;
  • has processes in place to insure the quality of the material they publish;
  • champions freedom of expression;
  • maintains the integrity of the academic record;
  • precludes business needs from compromising intellectual and ethical standards;
  • is always willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies when needed.

Unethical author's practices

The reliability and fairness of publication processes are crucial standards for academic practice. Readers should be informed of the funding of research or other scholarly work, regardless whether the funding institution has played any role in the research and its publication. Theoretical Practice applies procedures aimed to eliminate plagiarism, extensive auto-plagiarism, ghost-authorship, excessive honorary authorship and hidden conflicts of interest in the published material.

Plagiarism

In order to ensure the originality and quality of all published material, the editorial board applies the same procedures to every submitted article. Theoretical Practice is integrated with the CrossCheck system and tests all submitted materials for plagiarism.

Autoplagiarism

We strongly discourage extensive republication of larger pieces of already published texts or texts planned for publication. In some cases it is legitimate for a particular author to re-use parts of literature reviews, arguments or data if the new article presents fresh insights, revised research, or substantially new arguments.  As a rule of thumb, such situations must be clearly indicated in footnotes, regardless of the language of the previous publication. The author must ensure that such recirculation does not affect the moral or material copyright of any third parties such as previous co-authors or publishers.

Acknowledgment of authorship

Authors are obliged to keep the editorial board and their readers informed regarding any participation of professional agencies or additional persons in preparing the publication or in the presentation of the research (i.e., “ghostwriting”). One should also avoid assigning any authorship in cases of fictitious participation of a third party in the article or research preparation process (i.e., “guest authorship”).

Transparency of financial resources

Authors are obliged to reveal any financial sources contributing to their publication. Any information included about co-authors, co-operators and financing agencies should contain a clear indication of their contributions. This concerns above all, a clear acknowledgement of any granting institution, granting program and grant number (if applicable).

Research ethics

Authors should comply with the ethical standards accepted in their disciplines and follow the recommendations of the appropriate professional bodies (boards of ethics in their home universities, professional associations, etc.). Authors are obliged to take into consideration the well-being of their informants, narrators and other third parties in any way participating in the research material.

Above all, widely accepted standards of confidentiality and consent in the social sciences must be maintained. Informants or narrators must be informed about the purposes for which they contribute and express an explicit understanding and informed consent for further proceedings. Authors must protect the confidentiality of participants and avoid the identification of participants presented in data. Authors must adhere to the principle of the assumed interest of the informant, respect the right to privacy, and consider any other possible circumstances (given particular political, legal or moral contexts). Publication of highly confidential material, especially if not directly relevant to the research, should be avoided. This applies also to any archival material.

Code of conduct in problematic cases

Authors are held accountable for any information regarding the aforementioned issues. In the case of legitimate doubt, the editorial board follows the steps recommended by COPE.

In problematic cases the editorial board works with all involved parties to seek the fullest possible clarity. In cases where there is a lack of will to resolve any issues, explanations are unsatisfactory, or there is any denial or refusal to comply with recommendations given, the editorial board may reject a submitted manuscript or withdraw an already published article. Far-reaching violations with respect to academic fairness (such as plagiarism) will be documented and put forward for consideration by the relevant institutions (e.g., boards of ethics, home universities and granting institutions of the author)

Unified reviewing standard

The submission and review process is public and clearly described in the relevant section. It is applied in the same way to any submitted material which undergoes the peer-review process. The sections of the journal which undergo the peer-review process are clearly indicated. Editors strive to ensure that peer review at the journal is fair, unbiased and timely. Editors have a procedure to ensure that material submitted to the journal remains confidential while under review.

Theoretical practice occasionally publishes articles submitted by the members of the editorial board. These materials undergo the same reviewing procedure, and from which the author is strictly separated. In such cases the entire process is coordinated by another editor.

The editorial board seeks to ensure the best possible quality and reliability of the review process. Every article is assessed by two independent, separately chosen, anonymous reviewers. The journal does not pay for writing reviews and does not send packages of articles to a single reviewer. In cases of a possible conflict of interests or close previous cooperation between the author and the reviewer, a new reviewer might be called. The editorial board accepts authors' negative recommendations concerning particular reviewers and constantly seeks to broaden the body of reviewers.

Possible controversies

Theoretical Practices accepts different opinions during the publishing and reviewing process. Authors are entitled to express their opinions and offer criticisms at every stage of the publishing process. The editorial board is open to critical remarks and seeks to improve its work according to received evaluations. Authors have a right to discuss editorial comments, reviewers' comments and recommendations. The editorial board is willing to accept such arguments. However, an author's disagreement with reviewers is not sufficient grounds to change an editorial decision. In legitimate cases the editorial board will seek further reviews of an article.

The review process is confidential. Reviews, correspondence with reviewers and authors, and their discussions mediated by the editorial board, are not public. The editorial board does not disclose the identity of either internal or external reviewers. The journal holds that this principle is crucial in assuring the quality and assertiveness of the work. At the same time, the editorial board deems inappropriate that authors should comment publicly on particular reviewers’ comments. In cases of disagreement with reviewers, it is recommended that authors engage in open dialogue with the editorial board based on well-grounded responses to the reviewers.

The complete list of reviewers is published once a year.

Journal History

“Theoretical Practice” is a peer-reviewed academic journal established in September 2009 by a group of students and doctoral candidates from different fields of studies, gathered in AMU Questions of Boundaries Research Group. The first issue was devoted to the problems of the common and community and was published on 27th of March 2010, during the international conference “Perspectives of Biopolitics”. Until 2013 the journal was published biannually and it released 6 thematic issues. On that base, the journal applied in Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education evaluation procedure and got into the ministerial academic journals’ list B (for Polish journals without Impact Factor) receiving 4 points. The year 2013 marked an important threshold in journal’s history. It was a moment when the journal turned to quarterly publishing formula and extended its editorial board, that nowadays includes scholars from six different academic units and different countries. “Theoretical Practice” is constantly expanding its activities (this includes annual research seminars, summer schools, public meeting and discussions), continually increases quality level of published articles (in 2015 receiving 10 points on the ministerial academic journals’ list) and gradually extending its authors, editors and reviewers basis. The journal is expanding its international impact scope, continually increasing the numbers of its international collaborators, authors, reviewers and readers, as well as the share of English texts in every published issue.
