On the Need to Revise the Image of the Reconstruction of Jewish Life in Lower Silesia after 1945: Testimonies of Jewish Survivors from the Gross-Rosen Concentration Camp’s Subcamp Arbeitslager Langenbielau vs Propaganda Images

Abstract

Those who were liberated from the Gross-Rosen concentration camp and its subcamps in May 1945 played a significant role in the development of post-war Jewish life in Lower Silesia. Thousands of former prisoners settled in nearby towns, taking up residence in the homes of fleeing or displaced Germans, thereby contributing to the formation of a community that was exceptionally large by Polish standards. In this article, I quote excerpts from the testimonies of four witnesses who, after their liberation, settled in today’s town of Dzierżoniów, which in 1945 had the highest proportion of Jewish inhabitants in Lower Silesia. I analyse these recollections in relation to the motivations influencing the actions taken by the witnesses and compare them with propaganda accounts of the mass participation of former concentration camp prisoners in the reconstruction of the Jewish community in the region. This is an attempt to integrate their voices into the contemporary narrative regarding the historical period in question.
