Abstract

The study is dedicated to xenophytes – species introduced accidentally or unintentionally by human activity into the naturalized alien flora of Ukraine. The species composition of this group (553 taxa) was determined, and an annotated checklist is provided. The status of some species previously regarded as apophytes has been revised. The characteristic features of xenophytes in Ukraine were: (a) the high number of species of the family Amaranthaceae (including Chenopodiaceae), because they are usually not among the ten richest families; (b) the complete absence of phanerophytes and a very limited representation of chamaephytes and nanophanerophytes among plant life-form spectra; (c) the highest number of species associated with anthropogenic habitats, and among natural ones – with sandy and rocky habitats; (d) the high percentage contribution of archaeophytes. The floristic composition of the analysed group can be considered broadly similar to that of the typical floras of the eastern part of the Ancient Mediterranean region.
