Abstract
The starting point of this paper is the assumption that Esperanto is a living language, although originally a constructed one. The point is made, however, of the poor development of phonological theory as a linguistic discipline at the time L. L. Zamenhof was planning Esperanto. Phonology in the 19th-century is analysed in the more general framework of the evolution of linguistics, and compared to decisions taken by Zamenhof in the field.
