Abstract

In 1938, 64,086,566 tons of coal were mined in the Upper Silesian coal basin, of which 25,983,299 tons were mined in the western part of the Upper Silesian coalfield (which then belonged to Germany) and 38,103,267 tons were mined in the other coalfields belonging to Poland (excluding the Karvina coalfield). The production capacity of the Polish coalfields was not fully utilized due to a lack of sales, and the coal reserves (according to the 1936 calculation) amounted to 180 million tons. In 1938, 129,341 workers were employed in the entire coal basin, so that 495.5 tons of coal were mined per worker per year.
