Abstract

The land reforms in socialist countries after World War II were among the most significant economic and social transformations in the region. Their goal was to expropriate large landowners, democratize the agrarian structure, and support the landless and smallholder population. This study examines the principles and mechanisms of these reforms across various Central and Eastern European countries, analyzing the differences and similarities in their implementation.
The research is based on a critical analysis of historical sources, including legal documents, government decrees, and statistical data from Poland, Hungary, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Albania, and the Soviet occupation zone in Germany. Special attention is given to the political and economic factors that influenced the implementation of these reforms, as well as the methods by which the Communist Party in each country shaped agrarian policies.
The findings show that, in most countries, the reforms were initially carried out according to national and social criteria, targeting the expropriation of large landowners and wartime collaborators. In some cases, expropriated farmers received compensation, and the maximum land area subject to expropriation varied significantly between countries. While more radical measures were taken in Yugoslavia, Albania, and Bulgaria, certain large estates remained intact in Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary.
The study concludes that agrarian reforms in socialist countries pursued not only economic but also political objectives. They aimed to lay the groundwork for collectivized agriculture while simultaneously securing the support of the rural population for the new regimes. The long-term effects of these reforms had a lasting impact on the economic and social structure of these nations.
