Abstract

Long-distance trade and wholesale exchange as a factor in cultural development in medieval Poland has been studied mainly from an economic-historical perspective. The question of how the merchant milieu generated patterns of behaviour and professional consciousness that radiated onto the higher strata of Polish society and onto the development of art has not been analyzed in a comprehensive synthesis.
This article examines the influence of wholesale trade on the formation of behavioural norms and professional consciousness, the spread of literacy (reading, writing, and arithmetic), and the development of artistic forms in medieval Poland up to the beginning of the 16th century, with the focus on the 13th and 14th centuries.
The study draws on the city books of Gdańsk and Kraków (1470-1520), the oldest customs tariffs, merchant books, chronicles, and art-historical literature (Dobrowolski, Świechowski, Dettloff), combining economic-historical source criticism with cultural-historical analysis of the spread of late Gothic architectural forms.
The analysis shows that wholesale trade triggered a genuine cultural revolution in the 14th century: reading, writing, and arithmetic - previously confined to a small circle of clergy - became common skills of the urban patriciate and merchant class through the demands of the Kreditwirtschaft. The merchant milieu generated behavioural norms and professional consciousness increasingly adopted by the knightly estate. The direction of commercial expansion determined the direction of artistic influence: the Hanseatic system of trade connections created unified artistic currents throughout the Baltic region (Ostseeraum). The commercial sphere of Gdańsk and Kraków merchants corresponds strikingly with the eastern boundary of late Gothic architecture in Europe - demonstrating the mutual conditioning of economic and cultural relations across medieval Central Europe.
