Abstract

The Deutsche Umsiedlungs-Treuhand-Gesellschaft mbH (DUT), founded on 11 November 1939, played a central role in the Nazi policy of forced deportations and Germanization in occupied territories. Its connections to German monopoly capital – in particular the major banks – and to the Reich Commissioner for the Strengthening of German Nationhood (RKFDV) have hitherto been barely examined in the historical literature, despite the DUT's substantial role as one of many bureaucratic instruments of terror.
This article analyzes the function and activities of the DUT as an instrument of German monopoly capital in Nazi war-aims planning – in particular the role of the banking consortium (Dresdner Bank, Deutsche Bank, Compribank) in financing the forced expulsions, and the interlocking of the DUT with the RKFDV, the Main Trusteeship Office East (HTO), and the German Settlement Society (DAG).
The study draws on the files of the Deutsches Zentralarchiv Potsdam (DZA, Case 11), particularly the Nuremberg documents (NID, NO, NG, Rasche documents), the minutes of Dresdner Bank board meetings, and the Central Party Archives of the Institut für Marxismus-Leninismus.
The analysis shows that the DUT was provided with a banking consortium credit of 100 million RM and dominated by a supervisory board in which leading representatives of monopoly capital (Keppler, Kehrl) and the SS (Greifelt, Lorenz of the Volksdeutsche Mittelstelle) sat together. The DUT financed ethnic German resettlers and administered the confiscated property of deportees. By 1 June 1944 it supervised 901,000 resettlers; by September 1943 over 6 million ha and 698,000 agricultural enterprises had been seized from forcibly expelled Polish citizens. With nearly 2,000 employees, the DUT embodied the bureaucratic routine of deportation and Germanization policy as the connecting link between monopoly capital, the NSDAP, and the SS apparatus.
