Abstract
The problem of the Germanization of the western Polish lands incorporated into the Reich had its roots in the Prussian Drang nach Osten policy of the Bismarck and Bülow era. The Nazi expulsion policy represented its radicalization under total war conditions. A systematic analysis of the organizational apparatus of the expulsions, the course of the campaigns, and their economic consequences on the incorporated territories had not yet been undertaken in the historical literature.
This article analyzes the Nazi expulsions of the Polish population from the so-called eastern territories incorporated into the Reich (Warthegau, Danzig-West Prussia, Silesia), examining the organizational structure of the expulsion apparatus (Sonderstab für Umsiedlung, Umwanderungszentralstelle/UWZ), the planned and actual scale of deportations, the interaction between political and economic factors, and the forms of Polish resistance.
The study draws on the holdings of the Central Commission for the Investigation of Hitlerite Crimes (GKBZHwP), the State Archives of Poznań (APMPiWP), the State Archives of Łódź (APMŁiWŁ), the Wrocław State Archives, materials from the trials of A. Greiser and Richard Hildebrand, and the Main Library of Adam Mickiewicz University.
The analysis shows that the initial plan was to expel 6-7 million people (60-70%) from western Poland; in practice, approximately 924,000 Polish citizens were expelled before the end of the war. The organizational center was the Umwanderungszentralstelle (UWZ) in Łódź. Economically, the expulsions created a shortage of skilled labor, which forced the authorities in 1941-1943 to exempt part of the workforce at Polish enterprises. Polish resistance took the form of evasion: during some operations in the Warthegau, only 36% of persons slated for expulsion were found at home. The expulsion campaign constituted a flagrant violation of international law and a continuation of the longstanding Prussian Germanization policy, which under Hitlerism became an instrument of the direct extermination of the Polish people.
