Abstract
The shipbuilding industry in the Pomeranian ports (Gdańsk, Elbląg, Szczecin) between the Odra and Pasłęka rivers has been studied in regional monographs for individual ports, but a comparative synthesis covering all three centers from the 17th to the 19th century and placing the Pomeranian specificity within the broader context of German industrialization has been lacking.
This article analyzes the conditions and trends of shipbuilding development in the Pomeranian ports from the 17th to the 19th century, examining the organizational transition from guild craft to manufacture and capitalist enterprise, the role of mercantile capital, the impact of political changes (Royal Prussia, West Prussia, Prussian annexations), market fluctuations, and the transition from wooden to iron steam-powered ships.
The study draws on the author's earlier monograph on the Elbląg shipbuilding industry (1961), Binerowski's study of Gdańsk shipbuilding, Bogucka's study of Gdańsk as a production centre, and the Dzieje Szczecina (History of Szczecin, ed. Labuda, 1963).
The analysis shows that the characteristic feature of Pomeranian shipbuilding was the dominance of mercantile capital financing ship construction, with shipwrights undergoing transformation from guild masters to hired labor through the 17th-18th centuries. The manufacture system emerged in Gdańsk at the turn of the 16th-17th centuries in the context of the guild crisis. The enrichment of master shipwrights gave rise to capitalist shipyard owners (Klawitter in Gdańsk 1827, Schichau in Elbląg 1855, Nüscke and Vulcan in Szczecin). The Pomeranian shipbuilding industry had two specific features: its 'insular' character in an agrarian region and cheap labor. The abolition of Sund tariffs in 1857 and German militarist naval expansion temporarily maintained the leading position of Pomeranian yards; ultimately, Hamburg and Bremen, as major ports of the Reich, became the dominant shipbuilding centres.
