Abstract

The Free City of Kraków, established in 1815 at the Congress of Vienna and annexed by Austrian Galicia in 1846, occupied a unique economic position among the Polish territories. Despite its formal sovereignty, the city-state was heavily dependent on its neighboring powers—Prussia, Austria, and Russia—especially in matters of trade. The commercial freedoms granted to Kraków, including duty-free trade, were often undermined by restrictive measures imposed by the surrounding empires.
The aim of this study is to provide a systematic account of the foreign trade of the Free City of Kraków during the period 1815–1846. The research is based primarily on previously underutilized reports from Prussian residents, which offer detailed—though not always precise—information on trade flows, product categories, and market structures. These sources are supplemented by statistical data from the main customs office in Nowy Bieruń and relevant economic history literature.
The analysis shows that Kraków functioned as an important transit and redistribution hub—both for the export of Polish agricultural products (grain, wool, hides) to Prussia and Austria, and for the import of manufactured and colonial goods. Particularly strong trade relations existed with Silesia, Danzig, and Galicia. Smuggling also played a significant role, reportedly accounting for up to two-thirds of the actual volume of trade. The increasing dominance of Austria after the 1845 trade agreement led to a notable decline in trade activity, highlighting the city's economic vulnerability.
The study illustrates Kraków’s integration into and dependence on 19th-century Central European trade networks, and its importance as a regional commercial node.
