Abstract

This article investigates the structural transformations of agricultural countries in Europe during the industrialization process up to the outbreak of World War I. It focuses on the disparities between Western industrial initiator nations and the backwards agrarian states of Central and Eastern Europe. The background centers on the spread of British technological patterns across Europe and the challenges involved in adapting modern industrial methods to non-initiator economies.
The main aim is to analyze how agricultural countries—such as the Polish territories, Hungary, and parts of Italy and the Balkans—integrated into the broader European industrial revolution. The study utilizes a comparative approach, drawing on international historiography, statistical data (e.g. production growth, employment structure), and theoretical frameworks, including Rostow’s stages of growth and Gerschenkron’s typology of industrial development.
The article distinguishes between extensive and intensive industrialization patterns. It identifies three dominant types in agrarian countries: (1) industrialization based on food processing industries (e.g., Hungary), (2) textile-based industrialization using local resources (e.g., the Łódź region in Poland), and (3) industrialization driven by mining and heavy industry (e.g., Silesia, Galicia). It highlights the importance of foreign capital, state policies, and regional disparities in shaping economic modernization.
The findings show that while these countries remained agriculturally oriented, they significantly expanded their industrial base—particularly after 1880 during the second technological revolution. However, the transition was incomplete and uneven. The outbreak of World War I interrupted further progress, reinforcing structural dependencies and exposing the vulnerability of peripheral economies within Europe’s industrial system.
