Abstract
This article analyzes the key stages of agricultural development in the People’s Republic of Poland between 1944 and the early 1970s, focusing on structural, economic, and social transformations in the countryside. The war led to the destruction of nearly 35% of agriculture’s fixed assets, and many areas of arable land were left uncultivated. The postwar reconstruction of Polish agriculture was driven by land reform, the redistribution of land from large estates, and the need to integrate surplus rural labor into the national economy.
The main objective of the study is to trace the evolution of agricultural production under socialist policy, with special attention to changes in farm structure, labor allocation, investment dynamics, and state intervention. The author uses statistical data from national sources, government reports, and historical planning documents to examine these processes across distinct periods: postwar recovery (1944–1949), the six-year plan (1950–1955), policy shifts of 1956–1970, and early outcomes of the 1971–1975 five-year plan.
Key findings show that initial agricultural gains during reconstruction were followed by stagnation under heavy-handed collectivization and compulsory deliveries. Reforms in the late 1950s improved market incentives, leading to modest growth, particularly on private farms. The state played a growing role in mechanization, infrastructure development, and credit support, especially through Agricultural Circles and State Farms. Despite progress, agriculture struggled to meet rising demand, leading to periodic crises. By 1971–1973, renewed state policies had boosted output significantly, especially in livestock production.
The article concludes that Poland's socialist agriculture developed in uneven waves, heavily influenced by political priorities, economic restructuring, and the interplay between state and private sectors.
