Abstrakt

The subjunctive is a verbal mood rarely discussed in the context of the Czech language. One reason for this might be its morphological equivalence with the Czech conditional mood. Despite sharing the same morphological structure, these moods differ in their usage, which also impacts their syntactic properties. While the conditional mood is predominantly used in conditional clauses, the subjunctive mood in contemporary Czech includes the inflected conjunction aby and typically appears in subordinate mandative clauses. This study compares the Czech subjunctive with its counterparts in other European languages, contrasts it with the conditional mood and highlights the unique behavior of the morpheme by within clitic clusters.
