Abstract

Conceptual metaphors are essential in political discourse because they facilitate politicians’ communication with the public. These metaphors help explain complex political issues and present them in a way that makes them more understandable. Moreover, they create emotional bonds between the politician and the audience, increasing the message’s attractiveness. A powerful and apt metaphor can convince listeners of the correctness of a certain political opinion or measure. One of the most used areas for conceptual metaphors in political discourse is the conceptual sphere of FOOD. National cuisine is one of the oldest parts of people’s culture and their linguistic image of the world. In modern Czech political discourse, the names of typical products and dishes of Czech cuisine are widely used as conceptual metaphors (e.g. POLITICS IS A STEW, POWER IS A CAKE, etc.). An important feature of conceptual metaphors with the source sphere FOOD in Czech political discourse is the speaker’s attempt to show his negative attitude towards a situation or phenomenon.
