Abstract
The paper describes the history and current status of Czech philology (Bohemistics) at the University of Silesia in Katowice. The authors discuss the beginnings of Slavonic studies in Katowice, the development of Czech studies at the university, the organisational changes affecting local Bohemistics, and its present condition, as well as the prospects and uncertainties surrounding its future. In addition to formal and organisational issues, the authors also devote attention to past and current research in the field of Czech philology conducted at the University of Silesia, and to researchers who have made significant personal contributions to the development of the research centre. The article is also supplemented with a view of Czech studies in Sosnowiec from an active student’s perspective.
