Abstract
The article examines the validity of the thesis regarding the ongoing process of democratic deconsolidation, a phenomenon characterized by the weakening of democratic values in established Western democracies. It seeks to understand whether this represents a systemic shift or a temporary decline in public confidence in democratic ideals. The research questions include: is the deconsolidation of democracy a lasting trend or a transient challenge, and also what are the critiques and counterarguments to the concept of deconsolidation?
The analysis begins with a review of democratic consolidation as a theoretical construct, highlighting its evolution and historical underpinnings. Drawing on contemporary critiques, the paper analyses key arguments from proponents like Foa and Mounk, who suggest a growing detachment from democracy among younger generations. The methodology involves reviewing empirical data from sources like the World Values Survey to assess public attitudes toward democracy.
Key findings indicate that while younger generations express scepticism toward traditional democratic values, this may not uniformly signify a rejection of democracy itself but rather a revaluation of its frameworks. Furthermore, the critique of deconsolidation emphasizes generational shifts, evolving definitions of democracy, and the role of socio-economic factors.
The conclusions suggest that deconsolidation, although highlighting significant challenges, requires a nuanced analysis, especially as its definition of democracy relates to an idealistic perspective not reflected in socio-political realities.
