Abstract

Saint Hilda is a prominent figure in Celtic Christianity, renowned for her extraordinary life and enduring legacy. Durham Cathedral houses an icon of Saint Hilda at its altar, created by the contemporary artist Edith Reyntiens. This icon not only depicts the holy abbess herself but also illustrates key events from her life. This article, drawing upon the narrative presented in the icon, provides an account of these historical facts, while acknowledging the interplay of legend within the portrayal. Although the figure of Saint Hilda remains relatively unknown in certain contexts, her life and contributions merit closer attention.
