Abstract
Ukrainian mathematical terminology began to take shape at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. However, its active development was brutally interrupted in the early 1930s, when the unprecedented intervention in the structure and norms of the Ukrainian language became one of the fundamental principles of state language policy. Entire registers of so-called ‘repressed’ terms emerged. The article presents the process of the formation of Ukrainian mathematical terminology in its early stage and during its ‘golden age’ (1918–1933). It analyzes and classifies changes on the orthographic, grammatical, word-formation, and lexical levels, introduced in accordance with the top-down policy of internationalizing specialized vocabulary and artificially bringing the Ukrainian scientific language closer to the norms of the Russian language. The awareness of these processes and their impact on the modern shape of scientific terminology is of great importance in the process of glottodidactics and specialized translation, especially for Polish students. Even a cursory glance at the mathematical terminology of both languages reveals huge lexical differences, as Polish terminology, which, like Ukrainian, developed based on native lexical and word-formation resources, did not undergo forced internationalization.
