Abstract

The article is devoted to a comparative analysis of the short story Tails by Volodymyr Vynnychenko and the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, in which the eternal theme of “madness” demonstrates a specificity of depiction that is different from previous literary traditions. It is no longer an unreasonable “foolishness” or “God’s punishment” for sins, but a provoked effect of specific fatal circumstances that a person is unable to resist. The madness of the main characters has a socio-political background and is considered by the authors in the context of a “sick era”. The writers’ innovation is obvious, it is connected with the specifics of artistic movements: modernism and postmodernism. The main characters of these two works speak out against hypocrisy and social disharmony. Their madness is not the final stage of the disease, but an escape, a path to healing and insight, an important example of personal transformation, a way of knowing one’s rational essence (according to Foucault), one’s superiority over the seemingly “normal” environment.
