Abstract

The article is devoted to the ways of self-presentation employed by Ukrainian writers who continued their creative activity outside their homeland after the Second World War. The aim is to identify the factors that influenced the self-representation of Ukrainian writers and the mostly frequently employed patterns of self-representation tried in the foreign-language world. The study found that the writers primarily chose traditional models of self-presentation, replacing their own names and surnames with literary ones. The most frequent pseudonyms were those that allowed them to actualise the names of their birthplace. Self-presentation with the help of a deliberately chosen pseudonym allowed artists persecuted in Ukraine to protect their loved ones, avoid deportation, and draw the reading community’s attention to the problems of the survival of the enslaved nation. Self-presentation in non-ethnic conditions was influenced by the social context of creative activity, life experience, and individual characteristics of the writers, who directed their passionate energy towards solving national problems.
