Abstract
In the process of perceiving, recording, and studying Ukrainian spiritual songs in the oral tradition, certain concepts and approaches have taken shape. This article is essentially an attempt to systematize previous experience, highlight the problems raised in the work of various researchers that remain relevant, though often insufficiently studied or totally unresolved. Drawing attention to this system of approaches can serve as a guide in realizing broader plans to study folk religiosity and the phenomenon of religious poetic and musical creative heritage, which is characterized by a remarkable richness and diversity of texts in terms of their character, time of origin, nature, form, style, and genre features. The article considers some issues from folk religious repertoire research that still remain unresolved; it also proposes a variant of the diachronic approach, and generalizes the significance of Ukrainian spiritual songs as a material not only for purely folklore studies but also for interdisciplinary cultural and historical studies in the European context.
