Abstrakt
Sojusz Północnoatlantycki (NATO) od początku istnienia miał za zadanie chronić swoich członków przed zagrożeniami płynącymi ze strony państw Układu Warszawskiego, głównie ZSRR. W latach 90. XX wieku jego rola uległa jednak znacznym modyfikacjom. Coraz bardziej uwidoczniał się w jej wypełnianiu aspekt normatywny, zwłaszcza jeśli chodzi o wspieranie demokracji. Sojusz przekształcił się zatem z tradycyjnej organizacji bezpieczeństwa regionalnego we wspólnotę bezpieczeństwa (ang. security community). Transformacja ta stała się najbardziej widoczna w państwach, które wcześniej uznawane były za adwersarzy NATO – państwach Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej. Celem Niniejszego artykułu jest prześledzenie tej ewolucji i wskazanie jakie aspekty demokracji są wspierane przez Sojusz i w jaki sposób. Jako studia przypadku wybrano państwa Partnerstwa Wschodniego – Ukrainę, Gruzję i Armenię.
