Abstract

The article analyses Jan Němec’s Možnosti milostného románu (Possibilities of a Love Novel, 2019) as an example of the hybrid mode of autofiction. The first part provides an overview of the changes in autobiographical practice as well as theory towards questioning pure factuality of the autobiography genre and violating its conventions, a broader conception of autobiographical narrative, and a focus on the narrative construction of self. The contemporary situation in life writing is also reflected in the popularity of autofictions, which relate to the real-world author through a combination of referential and fictional discourse. The article points out how Němec’s text signals factual and fictional narration, which enables it to stage an attempt at autobiographical utterance and simultaneously thematise the difficulties such attempts entail. The ambivalence of the referential frame is vital to the work’s rhetorical strategy.
