Abstract
The article points out a close connection between the nation and its language and the traditional sense of the Czechs for humor including the language one and word-play. It cites selected examples of politically (ideologically) motivated modifications of established and period sayings, especially from the era before November 1989. Actualised well-known proverbs as well as witty inscriptions and slogans – often in verse – in public places were the demonstration of the passive resistance of dissatisfied inhabitants and their disagreement with the social order. They expressed the resistance to the ruling totalitarian regime.
