Abstrakt
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie roli wareskiego dowódcy Haralda (późniejszego Haralda III Srogiego – króla Norwegii) i jego drużyny w polityce oraz działaniach militarnych Cesarstwa Bizantyńskiego na początku XI wieku (1034–1042). Autorka analizuje jego rolę w poszczególnych wydarzeniach polityczno-militarnych, związanych z Bizancjum, od walk przeciw Arabom i Pieczyngom, poprzez udział w tłumieniu powstania Piotra Deljana w Bułgarii, po konflikty polityczne w Konstantynopolu. Podstawę analizy stanowią źródła skandynawskie (sagi, liryka, relacje kronikarskie), bizantyńskie i kroniki łacińskie. Wnioski wskazują, że choć relacje źródłowe mieszają fakty z elementami fikcji, obecność Haralda w armii Maniakesa na Sycylii jest dobrze ugruntowana. Kampania ta była ostatnią próbą odzyskania wyspy z rąk Arabów i miała znaczenie strategiczne dla odbudowy pozycji Bizancjum w Italii. Dla Haralda pobyt w Bizancjum okazał się kluczowy – pozwolił mu zdobyć sławę wojenną, doświadczenie polityczne i znaczne bogactwa, które wykorzystał po powrocie na Ruś i w Norwegii. Bizantyński epizod życia Haralda Hardraade miał zasadnicze znaczenie dla jego dalszej kariery i umocnił go w tradycji zarówno nordyckiej, jak i bizantyńskiej.
