The scientific journal is owned by the Faculty of History, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań. Between 1984 and 2009 published as a serial (thematic issues), from 2009 switched to yearly issues (thematic and mixed). The journal deals with the area of South-East Europe, retaining an interdisciplinary approach within the general field of humanities. The issues contain articles from a variety of domains, such as history, ethnology, art history, politics, and other humanistic and social ranges. The content is published in English, Russian, French, German, the Slavic languages of the Balkan Peninsula and in Polish. Moreover the journal contains reviews, reports and biographies of great scholars interested in the Balkan issues.

The journal has been founded on the initiative of Prof. Włodzimierz Pająkowski
