The journal has been founded
on the initiative of Prof. Włodzimierz Pająkowski
The scientific journal is owned by the Institute of History, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań. Between 1984 and 2009 published as a serial (thematic issues), from 2009 switched to yearly issues (thematic and mixed). The journal deals with the area of South-East Europe, retaining an interdisciplinary approach within the general field of humanities. The issues contain articles from a variety of domains, such as history, ethnology, art history, politics, and other humanistic ranges. The content is published in Polish, English, Russian, French, German and the Slavic languages of the Balkan Peninsula. Moreover the journal contains reviews, reports and biographies of great scholars interested in the Balkan issues.

The column IUS VALACHICUM has been included into „Balcanica Posnaniensia. Acta et studia” since 2016 (vol. 23).
It is composed of articles prepared within the scientific project entitled
Vlachs in European and Polish cultural area. Migration - settlement - cultural heritage
(NPRH Grant, 0604/NPRH3/H12/82/2014).
