Abstract
The article presents a detailed analysis of the commanders of Legio V Macedonica stationed in the lower Danubian provinces during the Principate. The authors reconstruct the biographies of about twenty legionary legates, taking into account their careers (cursus honorum), social origin, and epigraphic and literary sources. At the outset, the history of the legion itself is discussed. It was probably formed in the time of Julius Caesar or at the beginning of Augustus’ reign, and its first epigraphic attestation comes from 15–14 BC. The legion was initially stationed in Macedonia, then transferred to Moesia, and in a later period took part in campaigns in the East and in Trajan’s Dacian wars. Its long-term presence on the Danube makes it one of the key elements of the empire’s defense system. The main part of the article is prosopographical in character. The authors analyze the careers of individual commanders, indicating that most of them belonged to the senatorial elite and followed a typical career path including civil and military offices. Commanding the legion was an important stage leading to higher administrative posts, such as provincial governorships or the consulship. An important element of the analysis is also the geographical origin of the commanders. Representatives of the Italian elites predominate, although cases of provincial origin are also visible, which testifies to the gradual integration of the empire’s elites. The authors conclude by emphasizing the strong similarity between the commanders of Legio V Macedonica and the legates of other lower Danubian legions. This demonstrates the existence of a relatively uniform model of military-administrative career in the Roman Empire and the key role of the Danubian region in the structure of the state.
