Abstract
The article analyzes the internal buildings of the late Roman military camp of Iatrus (Moesia II) and their significance for research on transformations in military architecture, which is important for understanding changes in the empire’s defensive strategy. The aim of the study is to reconstruct the spatial layout of the camp and to interpret its functions. The author uses the results of many years of archaeological research and comparative analysis with earlier Roman camps. The most important results indicate that the camp from the beginning of the 4th century had an irregular shape adapted to the terrain and only one main entrance, which reflects its defensive character. The spatial layout was based on a single main street leading to the principia, while the internal buildings were divided into two unequal complexes. At the same time, the camp gradually ceased to have an exclusively military character and came to perform settlement functions. Iatrus constitutes an example of the transformation of Roman military camps in late antiquity — from regular offensive structures to irregular, strongly fortified, and functionally complex defensive spaces.
