Abstract
The article analyzes the relationship between Catholicism and interest in Latin epigraphy in Bulgaria in the 19th century, which is important for understanding the ideological use of historical sources. The aim of the study is to show the role of inscriptions as tools for building identity and legitimizing religious activity. The author uses analysis of epigraphic sources and their historical context. The most important results indicate that Latin inscriptions were used by Catholic clergy as proof of the continuity of the Roman tradition, and that their transfer had an ideological character. Analysis of the content of the inscriptions and their history shows that epigraphy performed not only a scholarly but also a symbolic function. Epigraphy can thus serve not only as a tool of historical research, but also as an instrument for shaping ideological and identity narratives.
