Abstrakt
Artykuł jest poświęcony roli Bułgarów podczas arabskiego oblężenia Konstantynopola w latach 717–718, uznawanego za jedno z kluczowych wydarzeń hamujących ekspansję islamu w Europie. Autor analizuje znaczenie polityczne i militarne udziału Bułgarów pod wodzą chana Terwela oraz kontrowersje obecne w źródłach bizantyńskich i arabskich. Celem artykułu jest reinterpretacja problemów związanych z udziałem Bułgarów w wydarzeniach lat 717–718 i uporządkowanie istniejących sporów historiograficznych. Autor wykorzystuje analizę porównawczą źródeł bizantyńskich i arabskich oraz krytykę dotychczasowych interpretacji. W artykule wykazano, że Bułgarzy odgrywali aktywną rolę w polityce Bizancjum już przed oblężeniem, ingerując w walki o tron cesarski i utrzymując silne wpływy na południu Bałkanów. Autor podkreśla również znaczenie kontaktów Leona III z Arabami i wskazuje, że wydarzenia wokół Amorionu (podczas wyprawy Abbasydów przeciw Bizancjum) mogły wpłynąć na decyzję Bułgarów o interwencji. Rezultaty analizy wskazują, że udział Bułgarów w odparciu Arabów stanowił ważny element obrony cesarstwa, choć dostępne źródła nie pozwalają na jednoznaczną rekonstrukcję przebiegu wydarzeń.
