Abstract
The article presents an attempt to apply the concept of language ecology to the description of the situation of the Aromanian dialect used by Aromanians in the Balkans. The aim of the study is to propose a model for analysing minority languages that takes into account their social functioning, legal status, and relations with other languages. The methodological basis consists of concepts of language ecology developed by Einar Haugen and other scholars working in sociolinguistics and language policy. The author discusses such elements as language classification, the number and distribution of speakers, the history of the community, the degree of standardisation, domains of use, language contacts, and the ethnic loyalty of speakers. The analysis demonstrates that Aromanian functions as a minority language dispersed across the territories of Greece, Albania, Macedonia, and Romania. It remains under strong influence from dominant languages. Despite its centuries-long tradition and clear cultural distinctiveness, its situation remains uncertain because of limited institutional support and ongoing processes of assimilation. The conclusions indicate that an ecological approach to language allows a better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the maintenance or decline of minority languages and may prove useful in the study of ethnic communities.
