Abstract
The author addressed the problem of difficulties in defining and assessing the Romanisation process in the Moesia Inferior province, located south of the lower Danube. The aim of the article is to present my own concept of Romanisation and determine the factors that influenced its course. The author used a historical and comparative method. He used epigraphic and archaeological data and the results of research on the Danube provinces. He paid particular attention to methodological issues, pointing out that previous definitions of Romanisation were often based on the spread of the Latin language or the presence of Roman administration. The author proposes a broader approach to this process, understood as the gradual assimilation of the Roman cultural model by the inhabitants. In his opinion, this phenomenon occurred in two ways. On the one hand, it was the result of the conscious policy of the Roman state, on the other, it resulted from the voluntary adoption of Roman life patterns by the local population. The unique nature of the Romanisation of Moesia Inferior was determined by the location of this province at the meeting point of Roman, Greek and Thracian cultures. The analysis showed that research on Romanisation requires combining various categories of sources and taking into account local social and cultural conditions.
