Abstract
The article is devoted to an analysis of the commanders of Legio VII Claudia during the Principate. The author reconstructs the list of known legionary legates and examines their origins, careers, and role in the military system of the Roman Empire. Legio VII Claudia, stationed from the mid-1st century AD at Viminacium in Moesia, played an important role in defending the Danubian frontier. The author estimates that during the Principate the legion was commanded by about 100–125 individuals, of whom the sources preserve information on about 15 commanders. Prosopographical analysis shows that the commanders were drawn mainly from the senatorial order and followed a typical administrative career. Their career paths included military and administrative functions, and the post of legionary legate was an important stage on the way to higher offices. The author also points to the role of political events (e.g. civil wars) in shaping the careers of commanders and their significance for the stability of the lower Danubian provinces. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of Legio VII Claudia as an element of the imperial defense system and the role of its commanders within the structure of the Roman elite.
