Kazimierz Majewski (1903–1981): scholar and organizer of research on Roman culture in Bulgaria

Abstract

The author presented the scientific and organizational activities of Kazimierz Majewski and its importance for the development of research on Roman culture in Bulgaria. The aim of the article is to assess the scientist's contribution to research on the contacts of the Roman Empire with the peoples of Central Europe and the Balkans. The author used the historical and biographical method. He analysed the scientific and organizational achievements of K. Majewski. He presented the scientist's influence on the development of Polish classical archaeology and scientific cooperation with Bulgaria. He discussed the development of his research interests - from Aegean culture to the issues of Roman imports and the impact of Roman civilisation on Barbaricum. The scientist's role in organizing the excavations in Novae, which began in 1960, is described in detail. His activities contributed to the creation of a dynamic research team and the internationalization of Polish archaeological research. As part of this work, findings on Roman imports, contacts of Roman provinces with Barbaricum and the Roman presence in the Balkans were verified.
