Abstract
The author presented the importance of Thrace in the politics of the Roman Empire from the time of Augustus to the reign of the Flavians (27 BC - 96 AD). The aim of the article is to explain the reasons for the liquidation of the dependent Odrysian state and the creation of the province of Thrace, as well as to determine the place of this region in the Roman imperial strategy. The author draws attention to the important role of Thrace in the process of organizing the northern border of the empire, assesses its political, military and economic importance. The historical method was used, based on the analysis of ancient sources and historiographical findings. The author presented the stages of subordinating the Balkans to Rome and changes in imperial policy leading to the liquidation of dependent states. He showed that the creation of the province called Thrace in the mid-1st century AD it was an element of a broader program of unification of the Roman Empire. In his opinion, the value of Thrace was determined primarily by its location between the Balkans, the Black Sea and Asia Minor and the ability to effectively control strategic communication routes. The province played an important role in defending the Danube border and preparing the empire's expansion north. The inclusion of this region in the provincial system resulted in the strengthening of the Roman presence in the Balkans and increased the administrative cohesion of the eastern part of the empire.
