Abstrakt

Artykuł poświęcony jest postaci Hermana z Dalmacji (ok. 1110–1154/1160), jednego z najwybitniejszych uczonych XII wieku, tłumacza i filozofa wywodzącego się prawdopodobnie z ziem południowosłowiańskich. Tłem badań jest rozwój kultury i nauki arabskiej na Półwyspie Iberyjskim oraz działalność słynnej Toledańskiej Szkoły Tłumaczy, która stała się ośrodkiem przenoszenia wiedzy ze Wschodu do Europy. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie biografii Hermana, jego działalności naukowej i translatorskiej oraz znaczenia dla rozwoju europejskiej nauki średniowiecznej. W pracy wykorzystano źródła łacińskie, arabskie i nowożytne opracowania poświęcone kulturze naukowej XII wieku, a także analizę porównawczą tłumaczeń i tekstów przypisywanych Hermanowi. Autor omawia zarówno dorobek Hermana w dziedzinie astronomii, astrologii i filozofii, jak i jego kontakty z uczonymi takimi jak Robert z Ketton czy Piotr Czcigodny. Szczególne znaczenie przypisano tłumaczeniu Koranu na łacinę oraz przekładom dzieł Abu Ma’shara, Euklidesa, Ptolemeusza i Al-Chwarizmiego, które umożliwiły Zachodowi poznanie dorobku nauk arabskich i greckich. Wnioski autora wskazują, że Herman z Dalmacji był jednym z kluczowych pośredników między kulturą arabską a europejską. Jego działalność translatorska i oryginalne traktaty, takie jak De essentiis czy Liber Imbrium, stanowią świadectwo syntezy wiedzy greckiej, arabskiej, hinduskiej i łacińskiej. Dzięki niemu średniowieczna Europa zyskała dostęp do fundamentalnych osiągnięć nauk Wschodu, co uczyniło go jednym z najważniejszych intelektualistów epoki.
