Abstrakt
Der Artikel analysiert die Schrift De rebus bellicis und ihre Bedeutung für die Erforschung des Geldsystems des spätrömischen Reiches, was für die Rekonstruktion der wirtschaftlichen Transformationen dieser Epoche von Bedeutung ist. Ziel der Studie ist es, die Datierung des Werkes neu zu bestimmen und seine wirtschaftlichen Angaben zu interpretieren. Der Autor wendet eine Analyse des Quellentextes in Verbindung mit einem Vergleich numismatischer und archäologischer Daten an. Die wichtigsten Ergebnisse zeigen, dass das völlige Fehlen jeglicher Erwähnung von Silber in der Schrift eher den Realitäten des 5. Jahrhunderts als des 4. Jahrhunderts entspricht, als Silber noch eine bedeutende Rolle spielte. Die Analyse des Geldsystems weist auf die Dominanz des Goldes als Grundlage des Fiskalsystems, die Marginalisierung des Silbers sowie die Funktion der Bronze als Kleingeld hin. Gleichzeitig nahm das Ausmaß der Münzfälschungen zu, was durch archäologische Funde bestätigt wird, während die Daten vom Balkan einen Übergang von der Dominanz der Bronze zur Vorherrschaft des Goldes im Umlauf zeigen. De rebus bellicis sollte daher als eine Quelle interpretiert werden, die die wirtschaftlichen Realitäten des 5. Jahrhunderts widerspiegelt, was für die Erforschung der wirtschaftlichen Transformation des spätrömischen Reiches von zentraler Bedeutung ist.
