The pulpit in the episcopal basilica at Novae (Svištov). An attempt at a reconstruction

Abstrakt

The article attempts to reconstruct the ambo in the episcopal basilica at Novae, which is important for research on early Christian architecture and liturgy in the Balkans. The aim of the study is to reconstruct the form and function of this structure. The author analyzes more than 70 architectural fragments discovered during excavations and compares them with other Byzantine objects. The most important results indicate that the ambo was about 5.65 m long and 2.86 m high, and that its central element was a semicircular marble balcony decorated with Christian symbolism, including the Christ monogram. The reconstruction also includes the system of stairs, balustrades, and rich decoration with geometric and symbolic motifs, while similarities to Constantinopolitan ambones make it possible to place the object in the broader context of Byzantine art. The ambo at Novae was a monumental and richly decorated liturgical structure, testifying to the high level of early Byzantine art in the region.
