The Dynamics and Evolution of the Greenlandic Separatist Movement, 1979–2009

Abstract

The article analyses the evolution of the Greenlandic separatist movement between 1979 and 2009, focusing on its functioning under conditions of political autonomy. The aim of the study is to examine the continuity of the idea of independence and to assess whether the introduction of home rule weakened it or, conversely, served as an instrument for its further development. The subject of the analysis includes political, legal, and economic factors that influence the separatist movement's activities and its relationship with autonomous governing institutions. The study is based on an analysis of legal acts, official documents, and publicistic materials concerning Greenland’s functioning after 1979. The findings indicate that the separatist movement did not weaken following the introduction of autonomy but became permanently institutionalised and adapted to the new constitutional framework. The idea of independence was implemented in an evolutionary manner through the gradual expansion of Greenlandic authorities’ competences.
