Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyse British policy, and position and their evolution in the context of the activities of Robert Schuman as French Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. The general framework of the analysis encompasses the period between 1947, when Robert Schuman was appointed
Prime Minister of France, and 1950, when the Schuman Plan was presented. To a limited extent, the analysis is continued until 1954, that is up to the collapse of the European Defence Community project.
