Abstrakt
Czerwona panika i ukształtowany na jej fali konserwatywny nurt polityczny maccartyzmu miał duży wpływ zarówno na amerykańskie społeczeństwo, jak i politykę wewnętrzną Stanów Zjednoczonych. Narastające od lat 40. antykomunistyczne nastroje i obawa przed infiltracją przez komunistów amerykańskiego rządu doprowadziły do społecznej paniki. W okresie intensywnego rozwoju ruchu antykomunistycznego dołączył się do niego senator Joseph McCarthy, który stał się twarzą działań prowadzonych w celu ujawniania komunistów w administracji. Pomimo że ruch nazwany od jego nazwiska narastał i występował już wcześniej, McCarthy zintensyfikował go i razem z nim upadł.
