The main issues of the European Union’s foreign and security policy in the programs of German political parties in the 2024 European Parliament elections

Abstract

The aim of the article is to describe selected aspects of the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union in the programs of the main German political parties before the elections to the European Parliament. After a short introduction, the programs of the following parties were analyzed: SPD, Alliance ‘90/The Greens, FDP, the joint program of the CDU and CSU, AfD, the Left and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance. Particular attention was paid in the study to such program elements as the assessment of the changing of international balance of power, the attitude towards Russia’s policy in the context of the invasion of Ukraine, the attitude towards the policy of the People’s Republic of China, the transatlantic alliance and the concepts of changes regarding the decision-making procedure under the CFSP. In addition, the issue of immigration to the EU was taken into account - although this topic in the treaties falls within the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, many political forces treat it as a problem originating in the external environment of the EU and as one of the key factors affecting EU security. The final reflections include the results of the European Parliament elections in Germany in tabular form and a summary and comparison of the analyzed programs of individual political formations.
