Abstract
The European West has been an example for years confirming the correctness of the basic assumption of the theory of secularization, linking the technological, economic and cultural development of societies with their departure from the religious vision of the world and man. Is the current phase of changes taking place in the sphere of European identity another natural stage of secularization processes? How are they interpreted in various theoretical approaches? An attempt to reflect on these problems is the task of this text. The author recognizes that Christianity can remain a living component of European identity provided that it accepts its role as one of the many “vast doctrines” (Taylor’s term) constituting this identity. If this does not happen, the basic thesis of the theory of secularization will probably be confirmed, linking technological, moral, moral and cultural modernization not only with the collapse of traditional forms of religiousness, but also with the withering of the deeper – Christian – roots of European identity.
